H. B. N. 4 x - ggi! W Mr. James Wilson and Kathleen Hunter Mrs. Leonard Congratulations to the Senior Class of 1952 on completing the work prescribed for a high school diploma. This diploma does not guaran- tee you anything. However, it signifies on your part a certain amount of determination to ac- complish that which you set out to do. Many who started with your class have fallen by the waysideg some for a good reason, many for lack of determination and purpose. Today we need people with purpose in life and a determination to achieve their goal. Your diploma from High School gives you a good start toward your goal. I hope we can count on you to continue. James S. Wilson 10 fa Y I F I l Mrs. Blair and Mr. Goodrich At this critical period in the history of our nation it is imperative that you, it's youth display a sound, hopeful outlook toward the future. Your task cannot be underestimated, for upon your decisions and actions de- pends the welfare of many millions of people in every country in the world. To you who are leaving Millcreek High School, and to you who will remain, must come the realization that each of you must do his utmost if you are to build a world of freedom, decency, and right. , I Your school years have given you the necessary preparation for work- ing, playing, thinking together, and for striving ever for a better world in which to live. Let the meaning of these years remain with you always in molding the goals of your life. Sincerely yours, Bruce A. I holrl the world but as the world, A stage, where every man must play at part, ' You are living in times of upheaval and strife where leaders of nations are striving' for the control of your minds. It is for you who strongly believe in our way of life to play your part to combat indiscriminate thinking. What you believe, what you say, and what you do will have a decided influence upon your family, your community, your country, and your World. Each of you must play his part to spread those doctrines and ideals which contribute so much to a free, happy, and progressive life. You must play your part upon the worldly stage so that the applause of the oppressed will always be with you. Extend your hand, exercise your mental control, mold your own character, and influence the character of others so that your part in future acts will be the best Within you. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The dream of almost every student who enters Millcreek is to become a member of the National Honor Society. Each year the faculty elects the members of the Na- tional Honor Society on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Each member is presented a tiny gold pin bearing a torch which represents the ideals of the society. President ........... -- .......................e.... M iss Helen Zuck 36 SENIOR PLAY Shakespeare may have been the first proponent of a play within a play, but the Senior Class did well in that line too when it produced that baffling, perplexing, be- wildering mystery farce entitled, Murder in Rehearsal. The romantic leads of this performance were Don Brindle and Sally Schwartz who co-starred with Dalton Lei- bold as the Sheriff. The powerful supporting cast included Audree Adams, Sallie Lud- wig, Alberto Roberts, Dwight Wilkins, Ken Stewart, Jim Dudley, Sandra Ambro, Janice Hecker, Judy Epply and Ron Palmer. The student director of this unique production was Carol Christensen. Mrs. Hahn, the coach, made one extremely clever inovation in the play, i. e., using the players own names in the play proper while using stage names in the play within the play flf this sounds confusing you should have seen the playJ. Plays may come and plays may go, but this is one play which, Whether because it was so unusual, or because of the cast, or because of the coaching, has imprinted it- self indelibly on the minds of all who witnessed its execution. 373 K LDRON STAFF lst row: S. The experience acquired that year enabled us to begin to create this Kaldron without delay in our Senior year. Then began the struggle to select the printer, engraver, photographer, and most difficult of all-the theme. Our final decisions included the selection of the quality photography of Parsons Studio, and as our theme, All the World's A Stage. While the art staff was preparing a dummy copy and creating the division pages, and the photography staff was wading through the wiltering array of class and activ- ity pictures, the advertising staff launched its ad selling campaign. One new innova- tion along this line was the listing of patrons of our year book. Thus were begun the trials, tribulations, long hours, and effort-sometimes spent in vain-but tirelessly expended never-theless, consumated by a fervid subscription campaign. This is the fruit of our labors. We are those who labored: EDITOR: Robert McChesney BUSINESS MANAGER: James Yochim ART STAFF: SUBSCRIPTION: SPORTS: ASST. EDITOR: Paul Davis, Mgr. SE IOR CLASS HISTORY Having auditioned for two years after entering the Hallowed Alma lVlater Theatre in 1946, we were finally accepted into Senior High as Freshmen, 154 strong. Leading us were John Le Jeal as Presidentg Don Joslin as Vice-Presidentg John Rautine as Secretary: and Bob Wighani as Treasurer. Here began to develop our reputation as the most independent class in Millcreek's history. ln Act Il we were Sophomores and began to exercise our abilities under the ca- pable leadership of Don Joslin as Presidentg Sandra Ambro, Vice-President: Julia Conner, Secretary: and Dick Curtiss, Treasurer. Our new activities included three booths at the Christmas Bazaar, a skating party, and a fine representation in sports on both J. V. and Varsity teams. The third act as Juniors commenced with a whirlwind class meeting accomplish- ing so many things with such precision and efficiency that all admitted it was the best rehearsed act yet. Our class officers were, in the usual order, Ron Palmer, Dick Curtiss, Audrey Lucas, and Ken Stewart. Not only did we obtain our rings this year, and elect our Kaldron staff-but we also presented the most daring and unique of all Junior Plays, A Young Man's Fancy. and created an exotic Junior-Senior Prom on the langorous shores of Lake Erie. We were represented in the National Honor Society by Jean Prindle, Jacquelyn Russell, Shirley Weber, Jim Yochim, Bob McChes- ney, Don Brindle, and George Pease. We were the stars of the final act-and let's face it-oftimes acted it. Ron Palmer was again our President, Vice President was Jean Botwright. Secretary and Treasur- er were Jean Prindle and Chuck Fleeman. In our more prolific moments we managed to prove our ability and have a mighty pleasant time by creating this Colossus of Kaldrons, producing a baffling mystery-farce, and leading the school in sports by our terrific performance on the gridiron and basketball court. Recovering from an almost fatal engagement with mid-term exams, we set about to crown our King, Ron Palmer, and Queen, Jean Prindle, at the swank St. Pat's Dance. With our lavish Class Party, our inimitable Class Day performance, and the beautiful Junior-Senior Prom still fresh in our memories, we look back-a little saddened-but proud nevertheless, of our Senior year-The Grand Finale of the Class of ,52. 42 NF BGLASSNEN 45, 3WW, , ,61- JU IO 1:-r ' Na vu. Hickory's leading 13-0-number 30 with an injured leg keeps pestering the coach, Let me in, I'll take it all the way, and in he goes on his first play-it's a pass-over his head-no, he caught it! l! Look at him outrun his tacklers! But two more are ready to meet him on the five yard line and he runs right into-not through-them! The satis- fied grin across his dirty face as he limps off the field indicates his triumph. Now it's the ground. 27 to 32 alternating hand offs and passes, 32 is puffing like a steam en- gine, but they can't stop him. Commencing a seventy yard march down the field with a 27 to 32 hand off-it's over. But the ref calls it back. 27-32, over again, and this time for good. Here comes the Greenville coach into the locker room now, Where's that number 51? You're the toughest player we've come up against this year! KNO wonder, he was sent to the All-Star Game.J . . . The whistle blows at Oil City and-an injured man is seen lying on the field it's number 27-with a broken arm! They're going to kick. It's fumbled, recovered, fumbled again. Our 48 recovers and look at him go-tacklers just can't stop him, he rips across for 6 points! And what's that-another injured man? Number 32 is ly- ing on the ground, the clock stops. Badly injured? No, just some mighty clever cap- taining gaining a little extra time to set up the next play. With such as these nostalgic gems of athletic prowess recurring in our thoughts the curtain is rung down-ending the football season of the 1952 Trojans. EAST 25-0 A green Trojan team operating from the new split T formation was unable to stop the War- riors runniing attack. TITUSVILLE 27-6 Our first touchdown of the season came as Tinsman 'outdistanced the Whole Titusville team 55 yards on a hand off from Rautine for 6 points. CORRY 27-6 Catching Millcreek off-guard in the first quarter, the Beavers made 3 T.D.'s in rapid succession, but Millcreek rallied to thorough- ly outplay them the rest of the game. Our T.D. came as Debold passed to Storaci for 30 yards. GIRARD 12-6 Split decisions, fumbles, and bad breaks de- scribe this game wlien we only hit pay dirt once on a 7 yard hand off to Tinsman. HICKORY 13-19 Overcoming a lead of 13 points in the first half, the Blue and White bou-nced back with a pass from Tinsmian to Storaci covering 62 yards' for ral touchdown with LeJeail converting. A mlamch of 72 yards le-ad by Davis, and a Rau- tine to Tinsman pass accounted for 12 more points which gave us our first win of the season. GREENVILLE 6-0 Thanks to our terrific line, unsc-ored upon Greenville was unable to make ground during the game, but managed to make one T.D. short- ly after the whistle blew. OIL CITY 26-6 Kahl recovered a blocked punt and ran for 45 yards and six points .The Trojans were severely hampered by injuries as Van- Honk and Tinsman were unable to plvay while Rau- tine received a broken arm and was lost for the rest of the season. HARBORCREEK 6-18 Mitchell's 20 yard run, a 50 yard march spearheaded by Davis, and a 80 yard intercep- tion return by Storaci clinched our win over the Huskies. CONNEAUT 50-6 In spite of a raging blizzard, mud, 19 pen- alties the first half and 22 the second, the Tro- jans managed one touchdown on an ariel from Debold to Mitchell who sprinted across from the 10. COACH - John Kola 70 The gymnasium is darkened, long after the departure of the cheering crowd. The only sound is that of the constant drip, drip, drip of the locker- room showers. Staring into the shadows they be- gin to assume familiar shapes. It's clearing-a game is starting-the pole blocks the view, but by the tra- jectory of the ball as it arches to- ward the bankboard and rebounds through the net, one can recognize it as one of Les' push shots. Ed and Dad bring the ball down the court, then Dad, with a quick dribble and twist of the body, sinks a terrific basket. In the second quarter a looming figure fakes to the left, shoots towards the bank board and Herco has put us ahead by two more points, From a mass of arms, legs, and hands. Goose emerges with the ball and banks in a field goal. Even more impressive is the third quarter when Wig first unleashed a right handed hook followed in rapid succession by a set shot from the left corner. The crowd responds as Ed spins in a left hand drive shot. Shortly after the beginning of the fourth, Joe steps to the foul line and barely glancing at the basket, sinks a single pointer. Receiving an ovation as he walks off the floor, Goose is replaced by Quentin who makes a successful right handed hook in a matter of seconds. At the sound of the final buzzer, the shadows fade back into oblivion. Only audible now in the gym is the drip, drip, drip of the showers, for the curtain has decended on this aspect of the sporting scene. Our student body was represented this year in the Student Council by six seniors, five juniors, four sophomores, three freshmen, two eighth graders and two seventh graders. Elected President, Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer were Jim Yochim, Carol Christensen, and Jean Prindle in that order. In an endeavor to better the school, the Student Council invoked a system of hall monitoring designed to prevent confusion and extraneous noises in the hall, and to keep students from skipping class. Where before if a student wanted to go to the of- fice he had to go all the way up and get permission from the teacher-now he merely has to go up to the teacher, obtain permission, have her fill out a slip indicating the destination, day, period, and the student's name, and show the pass to every hall mon- itor on the way. If he were caught in the hall without a pass, he would be sent to the office, so one can well see the merit of this system. This year they also wrote a new constitution establishing the apportionment of representatives of the various grades to the Council, the school colors, the motto, and the seal. High on the list of accomplishments of this progressive organization was the suc- cessful Alumni-Varsity game played to raise money for the March of Dimes. A dance followed the game. It is achievements such as these that have made the Student Council so indispensable in our school scene. 76 ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE In order to give the student body a voice in the selection of our school assemblies, Mrs. Hahn organized the Assembly Committee which elected Will Humphries as chairman. Typical of the organizational abilities of this committee was the extemporaneous program of the pre-Christmas season. The A Cappella presented a variety of musical selections pertaining to the season and some of the individual talents of the school in- cluding the faculty were called upon to favor us with their renditions, many of which were selected by popular request from the audience- A few months later we were surprised by another assembly on Abraham Lincoln presented through the kind courtesy of the Lincoln Insurance Company, 1109 G. Dan- iel Baldwin Building. In an attempt to apportion the assemblies over a long period of time, we had an- other one the next week, which was sincerely appreciated by the entire student body. Dr. O. W. Wermingham entertained us with a wonderful lecture illustrating the ne- cessity of a firm code of morals and the folly of ignoring this necessity by relying strictly on the carnal to provide a happy life in these troubled times. Once in a lifetime coups like these characterized the Assembly Committees ac- tivities carried on in spite of the very adverse circumstances imposed upon them by the extremely crowded conditions which necessitated using the auditorium as a study hall. lst row: C. Growing by leaps and bounds, this year's Hub truly has outdone, any and all, pre- vious editions, and it will be a difficult task for staffs to perform up to par in the future. Many new features were adopted this year, which made the publication equal to that of any school newspaper published in the state. Only three years ago it would have been a remarkable task to sell 350 copies, but as the Hub grew, so did its circulation. This year, 700 copies of each edition were sold, with 800 copies of the super-extra Christmas issue being sold. In extra-curricular activities and promotional stunts, once again the Hub was the forerunner. Many different and unique projects were enacted, with every one of them meeting with the utmost backing and support on the part of the student body, faculty and administration. Football excursions to Corry and Oil City, a basketball excursion to Conneaut, all of which provided excellent transportation for nearly 400 students and alumni, were met with much approval by all. With the profits secured from these excursions, a banner was presented to the school. However, the never-to-be-forgotten, most sensational, and fulfilled function which Millcreek has ever seen, was the Charity Basketball game between the Faculty All- Stars and the Varsity team- It was the top attraction of the year and provided the en- tire audience of 500 people with a performance they will never forget. And last, but not least, was the annual banquet held in honor of graduating sen- iors of the staff, where letters for outstanding service in the field of journalism were presented. All in all, under the excellent supervision of their advisor, Miss Sally Winder, and co-editors, George Pease and Julia Conner, along with the entire staff, a new era in journalism and promotional ideas kept Millcreek bubbling over with enthusiasm. 78 DEBATE CLUB The question for debate this year was, Resolved: All American citizens should be subject to conscription for essential service in time of war. The Millcreek team debated this timely topic in eight debates with city and county schools. There was only one experienced debate this year and that is the reason for their slow start. However, Millcreek can now boast of a winning team as they won three out of the last four contests. The first four debates consisted of the regular five minute speeches, three min- ute questioning, and the three minute rebuttal. Our affirmation team consisted of: Ted Philips, Don Hester, and Eldie Dickey. Those supporting the negative were: Jeanie Boyd, Peggy Moore, and Dick Rowley. Ten minute speeches with five minute rebuttals, the method used in colleges today, proved to be very interesting for the last debates. Our affirmative then supported by Don Hester and Eldie Dickey-the negative by Jeanie Boyd and Dick Rowley. To complete the season, a debate banquet was held on Monday, March 31 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Lawrence Park.Millcreek was the only school which had two representatives taking part in the debate that evening. They were Eldie Dickey and Jeanie Boyd. It was only the capable coaching of Miss Shanor that guided the teams and kept the club a smooth running organization. She was aided by the officers who were: Dick Rowley as President, Peggy Moore as Secrxtary, and Don Hester as Treasurer. The purpose of the Debate Club is to encourage students to think intelligently and logically. A by-product of debating is the development of the art of expressing one- self clearly and convincingly, which is an asset in later life. E. Dickey, D, Hester, J. Boyd. '79 Row 1: D. Seigristg R. As the name implies, the Future Farmers of America is a county school organiza- tion found in the United States, Hawaii, and Alaska, having as its goal the development of efficient, intelligent farmers and citizens. Covering grades 8 to 12, the F. F. A. in Millcreek follows only the strictest parliamentary procedure and each member is himself an accomplished parliamentartian capable of handling the presidency or chair- manship. Since the purpose of the club is not only to develop successful farmers, but good, in- telligent citizens as well, they have many and widely varying activities to raise money land sometimes just to have a plain old good timej ranging from selling Christmas trees to playing a mighty rugged game of basketball. The Project is rated very highly in the eye of a student. As the name indicates, this is a project undertaken by each stu- dent-a record of his adventure in husbandry. It keeps track of such things as work hours spent on the job, capital invested, profit returned, and utilization of agricul- tural developments. Monetary rewards are received by the students preparing the pro- ject book deemed most worthy on the basis of intelligent agricultural practice and neatness. Come December, it then goes on to Harrisburg to vie for national honors. In early January the three members receiving the most points, which are derived from the project book and V-arious awards, are sent to the F. F. A. State Convention. Upon payment of their expenses, others often go too. This 4-day convention is an ex- perience that the boys look forward to with great anticipation. The activities result in the building of good character, broadening the knowledge of agricultural problems and the creation of staunch, worthy Americans. 84 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA lst row: N. In the year 1917 the Congress of the United States enacted a program of aid to vocational instruction whereby the Department of Agriculture established in schools across the country both the Future Farmers of America and the feminine counter-part of this organization-The Future Homemakers of America. The Millcreek chapter of the latter, sponsored by the active Miss Parini had a busy season with many activities such as miniature footballs for the annual Save-An-Eye-Game and maintaining a candy, packing Christmas baskets and dressing dolls for needy families as a Christmas project, and entering a kitchen planning contest. On a state wide level, fifteen girls represented our F.H.A. at a Region A meeting held at Indiana State Teachers College, and later on in the year four more gained the privilege to attend another at Pittsburgh through diligent work and outstanding progress. I In its purpose to teach the young women of today the basic fundamentals of home- -making like baby care, sewing, family management, and meal planning the Millcreek F.H.A. has succeeded admirably thanks to a great extent, of course, to its sponsor Miss Parini. 85 X f PROGRAM ACT I - INTRODUCTION ....
