I wish to congratulate you on the way this booklet has been brought out, and I think you deserve an abundance of credit for making the booklet such a success. It seems to cover all of the school life for the past four years of the McDonell Memorial High School. I also wish to congratulate you on dedicating it to the Reverend James McGurk, Pastor of Notre Dame Parish of your city, and I know it has made him most happy, as a reward for his untiring efforts on behalf of your school life. No doubt when you start out in your business world, you will often look back and admire his fatherly advice given you during your school life at the McDonell Memorial High School. The 1ris Staff oi 1937 As thousands of lingers turn the pages of this book, and thousands of eyes read between the lines, when gaze after gaze seeps beneath the pensive looks on the faces of the staff, per- haps there will be a few, in the days ahead, who will realize that the lV1cDonell Iris of 1937 was a fancy born in the hearts of the students at the advent of their high school days, a reality at the close. The explosion of the pent-up emotions set the wheels moving, and in a few months, a gigantic project which will require an eternity to forget, was viewed as a success by those who had worked stubbornly, doggedly to see their publication a masterpiece. Words are meaningless when thanks are proferrecl, but it is our most sincere wish that the faculty, the student body, and that great army, the business and professional men, under- stand our infinite gratitude for the cooperation extended, with- out which our dream would have been a haunting memory of what might have been. The fascinating art work of the 1937 Tris was done by Marie Bresina and Medard jasper whose talent is no longer hidden. The business manager, Ione Forrester, and her genial assistant, Ethel Hughes, carried on in the true fashion of Mc- Donellites of the past, in making the yearbook a hnancial suc- cess. To the associate editors, Kathleen Phalen, Mildred Rit- zinger, jane Sullivan, and Warreri Smith, we are indebted for the many hours of their time, which they gave so willingly during the many days previous to May 10, when the Iris went to press. Mucli credit is also due to the sports editors. the class photographers, and the advertising managers for their excell- ent work which elicits immediate appreciation when seen. McDonell, we salute youl May our 1937 Tris be kept within your folds, as a tribute to our memory, as we shall for- ever hold you dear to our hearts. -Sue Ermatinger, Editor-in-Chief Senior Resume Ir is truly fitting and appropriate that the year of 1937 should witness the emanation of thirty-seven students from the stately portals of 1V1cDone11 High. The Seniors presented their class play A PAIR OF S1xEs on May 16. Royal blue and gold were selected as the class colors. Appropriately enough Ad HSIFS per asperan has guided the Seniors over the rough and stormy journey of their high school careers. Ever mindful that earthly progress cannot he attained without Heavenly intercession the Queen of Peacel' was chosen as patroness. The Blue 1ris was adopted as the class Hower. Kathleen Phalen carried the honors of class valedictorian and Sue Marie Ermatinger of salutatorian. The impressive baccalaureate services were held in Notre Dame Church on Monday' morning, May 31. 1n the evening of June 3 their school days drew to a close when the graduation exercises were conducted in the auditorium. The students who comprise the upper third of the Senior Class as determined hy the honor points earned during the four years are as follows: 1'I'I'IilQ '1i1111i1JH17l'1..XS9 li.it1i1i-rn I'1i.ilt-ii -'--- .TH lion-ir points Sue 1'1i':iiiitiiigvi' . ,RSSB limi-ii' point: Kliiilrx-11 Hitziiigei' 3.1.5 limi-ii' points klzxiw Siillirgiii - .111 liniiui' points 1-fin' 171-i'i'estt'i' . .1110 lilriioi' pmiils 1Y.iii'uii Smith - - 33.3 liininr in-nite Xiqiigziirt Ihislli' 511.5 llwiivir lmiilis latin-I llugllrs - 37.1 11.-n-ir lmiiitu In-nv St-illzim-it - - 2.31 114-init points .Xllwrt Bt-i't1ii.iuine - JJ! liiiiinr points Ilimitlii 1'iwvtti- - - lIPl.51iuiiui' points Rus:-iii1ii'ic X15 rc' ----- 1X'7 limi-ii' points ll-in.i1i1 Hillixuil - ----A 17 51i-iiiii1'1I-iiiits. .XNIIiliIl',XN I.Ii1QI1rX ,XXXIXRIJS .Xrtliin lk-I.isIi'gX1i141i'w1 Riuiiiger 1.4 llx1..Xx X1 1'.1J.X1. UNIORS IUNIOR RESUME Witli a determination to make the scholastic year a shin- ing success. the members of the class of '38 assembled for the third time within the protecting walls of McDonell Nlemorial High School. Its numbers had been somewhat diminished by the departure of several notable members, one of whom went to talce up her abode in the capital city of Wisconsin, another now resides in one of the Pacific states, and a third is pursuing her studies across the sea in England. However, a versatility of talent was discovered in the rather small class. If you are seelcing scholastic excellence, there is Mary jean Connellg dramatic ability, Lenore Germain or Bernadine lVlcElroyg a news reporter, lola Kleushg a foot- ball hero. Francis Rushmang a basketball star, Carl Nicolaig a pugilist, Richard Sullivang a delightful baritone singer, Bernard Frenetteg an accompanist, Arthur McDonald, a convincing de- bater, Robert Piotrowslci or Peter Haringsg a comedian, Arthur Durch or Jerome Padruttg an artist, Medard Jasper, a woman with executive ability, Mary Elaine O'Neilg and so on, down the roll, each plays his part on the stage of school life. l'l'l'liR TIIIRIP Kllf VIHXSS Mali ,Irwin tttmuvll --... I Hugh, Secretary: Harold Vonnully, Iresitlent, SOPHQMGRES SOPHCMORE RESUME On September 8, 1936 we reentered McDonell to enlist in the ranks of sophomores. In the early part of the year we were particularly honored in having Mary Elsie Phalen elected as secretary of the Student Council. During the course of the year several candy sales and bake sales were sponsored and the sophomores gave evidence of their business and culinary enric- iency. The proceeds added a new 1936 model microscope to the biology department. Our class was divided into groups, each group taking special interest in some outside activity. When Christmas time arrived the united efforts of all the groups were centered on the distribution of food baskets among needy people. The Xaverian group sponsored a number of candy sales, the pro- ceeds of which were presented to Father Ausman for the for- eign missions. April 28 was the biggest day of our sophomore year. We entertained the seniors, juniors, and freshmen at a Spring Skip. After a program the student body proceeded to the gymnasium where the school orchestra furnished the dance music. A deli- cious luncheon was served after the grand march, led by the two general committee chairmen of the party, LalV1oine Car- dinal and Patricia Stumm. Judging by the various activities of the past year, the sophomores feel that their Hne spirit of cooperation has not been in vain, and they are ready to steer their vessel into deeper waters-during their junior year. FRESHMEN FRESHMAN RESUME On September 7, the good ship S. S. McDonell took on 65 new passengers from the many ports of Tilden, Falls, LaFayette, St. Charles, South Side, and Notre Dame. Soon after they set sail, commanding officers for the new group were chosen as follows: Marie McDonald, Captain, John Phalen, Commander, Dorothy Engel, Lieutenant-Commander, Carl Abel, Lieutenant. The principal social event of this voyage took place on January 9 in the hold which was decorated for the oca- sion with huge Christmas trees and icicles encircling the port- holes. Even today some of the passengers speak of this as a perfect party. In the course of the voyage, the new sailors learned to unite the intricate knots of Latin, French, and Ger- man. Attempts to sight Antonio's uargosies with portly sails in rhe MERCHANT or VENICE were a pleasure. We can scarcely love Portia more than we do now even after our brief stay with her at Belmont. A few of us toolc on the siege of seasiclcness when we entered the Sea of Algebra. We discovered in the Sea of Ancient History how the old Romans and Greeks conducted their ships of state. The last and biggest event was our benefit card party macle successful through the efforts of our dear mothers and many friends. It wonlt be long now and we will be safe in the Port Sophomores', for another journey through pleasant waters and under sunny skies. l'I'I'ER THIRD UF THE CLASS Mary I,ou Nunke ----- 110 honor points lilizahelh I'im'h V 105 honor points I.ucilli- Rooney - 99 honor points Marie Mcllonnlil - 98 honor points -lnsin llc-bert - S9 honor points llorntliy Engel - R6 honor points Eugene Nolan - S5 honor points john l'halen - V 84 honor points Imytmi Thibcileau 83.5 honor points Nnrinn Lkiyo - - 80.5 honor points Hr-tty Ann Hziuthier 79 honor points ,lrzin lluh V - - 75 honor points Louise lin-flerick - 71 honor points Nlnrgnrct VVittrock 70 honor POINTS I'ntht-rine llarings 59.5 honor' points Phyllis filohensky 58.5 IIOHOI' IJOQFHS Mary Ann Bushlanrl 58 honor points Monica Reiter - 57.5 honor POIYWS Xlur lane Smith 57.5 honor POEMS A 1 y ,f . ----- jane Vharland ---- - - Louise Hebert ---- - - 56.5 honor 55 honor points points 'I . This solemn event takes place on the last Sunday in May at a flower decked altar erected out in the open on the Notre Dame Church grounds. Several hun- dred boys and girls, from the tiny tots to the stately seniors, participate in the procession which wends its way around the Church premises, singing hymns of love to the Queen of the May. First Communi- cants in simple white, graduates in somber gray cap and gown, high school girls in uniforms and lace veils, boys and girls, all, in their Sunday best do honor to the Nlother of God. Last in the procession is the Queen's court, consisting of little flower girls. pages, the maids of honor, and finally the May Queen who places the garland of flowers on the head of the statue of Mary when five hundred voices sing O Mary We Crown Thee With Blossoms Today, Queen Of The Angels, Queen Of The May.', Jane Sullivan of the graduating class was elect- ed this year as the May Queen and the Johnson sisters, Dorothy and Valeria, as the maids of honor. It offers the onloolcer something that can be obtained in no other phase of academic life. Football, basketball, boxing, etc., and a busy intramural schedule, combine to fill completely the sports program at McDonell. FOOTBALL The Football Season of 1936 will be recalled as one of the most colorful in the annals of sports on the I-Iilltop. Out- side of their 'first encounter, and that with mighty Cumberland, when yet the team was green, no school scored more than 7 points a game against the Macks all season. They broke even, losing to Cumberland, Cotter, Somerset and Aquinas, defeat- ing the Alumni, Spring Valley, St. Felix and the highly touted Stanley powerhouse. The forward wall was not bulky, but rangy and fast, whose efliciency and speed gave them the jump on their heavier opponents. In short, the Macks had a light team and a traditionally fighting one. MCDONELL AT CUMBERLAND, SEPT. 18 The Macks journeyed for their hrst game and baptism by fire to Cumberland. To the surprise of the dopesters, they out-played and out-gained the Beavers in yardage, especially in the first half, but lacked the scoring punch. In the last half, the overwhelming weight of the Northerners wore our men down. Despite the score of O to 20, Cumberland has made the statement that the 1936 Macks were the hardest fighters they had met in a long, long time. That's quite a reputation for the McDonell 1937 squad to live up to. -unmanag- xf l i s 111 ff iffy Af!! 'ff ,-2 jj X I fy! l ,M rf M! ff . And though all the stars of Chippewa were in the lineup, condition will tell. The old Grads were defeated, 7-0. Gene Cardinal starred for the Alumni. SPRING VALLEY AT MCDONELL McDonell opened athletic relations with Spring Valley and cemented the frienship by tendering them a 14-6 defeat. The McDonell backs broke away at will and rolled up four times as many first downs as their opponents. STANLEY AT MCDONELL An inspired Blue and White wave defeated an incredulous Stanley eleven, before a packed stadium. What was one of the best high school games ever seen in these parts turned into a victory of 7-6 for the Macks. Incidentally, that was the only game Stanley lost all season. COTTER AT MCDON ELL With the first string backfield out of commission, the Macks not only fought the heavy Cotter team to a standstill, but led them by 6-0 up as far as the last quarter. Then Bambenek, their 200 lb. full-back, went over for a touchdown. The conversion being good, we lost 6-7. MCDONELL AT ST. FELIX At Wabasha the Macks met the undefeated St. Felix aggregation. A touchdown in the first period, a safety in the third, and another in the last quarter completed our victory of 14-6. SOMERSET AT MCDONELL Somerset, the school that up till their visit with McDonell had lost only one game in 2 years, now met the Macks and won by 6-0. A basketball pass bounced off the head of one of our line men into the arms of BeLisle, their quarterback, who happened to be the fastest man on their team. Like a deer, he sped for a touchdown. MCDONELL AT AQUINAS The Aquinas onslaught swept our boys olf their feet to the tune of 7-0 in the first few minutes of play. Having swamped Cotter but recently, Aquinas was a bit cha- grined at the termination of the game that the score still remained 7-0. Our line played football that day, charging in hard and smearing up plays beautifully. With the Aquinas game our football season came to a close. 60 W L . , Q'Foo'tball Players ,PW Seffiildr Varsity l we ,wif ,lx 7 . .I- fm-, . ' ,-Lffrxg fr-a.fl..l.Mf. 1 ,f 'K ' . -1 ffl! vi. .411 y . Mr. McDonell's influence was not con- fined to one field but was felt in uncounted places. The McDonell Memorial High School of Chippewa Falls is a living, magnificent mon- ument to the genuine Christian spirit of A. A. McDonell as well as his illustrious father, the Hon. A. B. McDonell. The memory of A, A. McDonell will linger in Chippewa Falls as long as the Hilltop School exists-as long as the Catholic youth of this region continue to go to the McDonell Memorial High School. Daily grateful prayers well up from count- less youthful hearts and are wafted to the Great White Throne of God, pleading for the men who made a Catholic high school education possible in Chippewa Falls.
