Those who are responsible for its publication herewith present a graphic description of personalities and activities which prove that old M.H.S. continues the pattern of educational service and intellectual and physical accomplishments, long ago established in this institution of learning. The moving finger writes and having writ moves on. The present soon becomes the past, and the future soon moves into the position of the present. But as time flows on quietly and relentlessly, interested eyes may repeatedly scan these pages and momentarily turn back the pages of time and recapture and re-live the rich and happy moments previously ex- perienced in these halls of training. Across the fields of memory we may travel into the land of yesteryear. and though we may not go back, we may thinl: back. It is with this idea in mind that we dedicate this Annual to all who have shared with us the enjoyable use of our beautiful well-kept buildings, the rich associ- PAGE ation of our varied and talented faculty, and the efficient and energetic Administration and Board. We are deeply grateful to the generous business men in McDonald and in nearby communities for the ads which we have secured from them and which we in- clude in this edition. Without the financial assistance thus assured, this publication of the Roller would have been next to impossible. Our theme is based on the seasonal sequence. We have striven to place our school classes and activities in such order that they will depict a progression rela- tive to your school life, We wish to express our appreciation to Mr. Kukuk, the advisor and editor, to Mr. Moran for his artistic contributions, Miss Fenton and her art students, and to the competent staff of eleventh and twelfth grade stu- dents who gave willingly of their time and talent to make this 1954 Roller a definite success. 3 ADRIAN L. Our hats are off to our local school supporters who have cushioned our work by presenting our school with equipment necessary to make a child's school life more interesting. At Christmas time our buildings beam with the Christmas trees pre- sented, on the playground, activities and games are carried on through the efforts of thoughtful P.T.A. people: wet clothing is no longer a problem at Roosevelt School since the installation of the clothes dryer: now for the benefit of all students, an audiometer has been presented in order that the hearing acuity of each student may be checked. This screening program is being carried on by Mrs. Lindsey and Mr. Kukuk. Financial support for this program comes through membership dues and the annual school fair. We of McDonald Schools say -- Good work P.T.A. : we greatly appreciate your interest. PAGE E f W Q ' J 2 X X I , 1 , fi I ' ., Aff' 1103 ' S l J . .. 'Ai Y if ' 1 u' ers'-fvaiz' '- . On this aay the senior class of 54 lifted the roof of our' first Alma-Mater as we boisterously went to our kinder- garten seats. Say, kids, remember how we learned to play hot- potato. When we finally caught on to the game, it was time for us to pass on to the first grade. That was the year of the big snow-drifts, or they seemed big to us, maybe because we were so young, short, and darling. Ah-h-h! Remember the day Carol Kutsko was asked to dispose of the vase of withered flowers and she emptied water as well as flowers in the waste basket? In the second grade we began to have responsibilities tpushed on usj. We had jobs such as cleaning erasers, washing boards, and cleaning the fish bowls. lane Martin was so enthusiastic, she over fed a goldfish and the poor thing died. Her only comment to this day is I didn't think it would eat everything in one day. See, even then we were real smart. Ha Ha. ln the third grade, Miss Hinten had a sure-cure for talkers. Hey, Torn Witkoski, remember sitting under her desk playing with a baby doll? Strange as it seems, Tom still hasn't learned his lesson. Right, Tom? The fourth year we were really big stuff. We ran the second floor tthat is, if we didn't get caughtl. Hey, kids, does this sound familiar? Round, round round, ready, ready, ready, touch, l-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10. Yes, that was Miss Reddincier's writing class. In the fifth grade, we met and joined Mrs. lsler and her tall, tall tales. Remember the Spanish moss and cypress root we had growing in our room? However, in the sixth grade Mrs. Curry and the Misses Ieannette and Iosephine Roush cooled us down a few degrees. lt took them quite a while to cool off the giggling, giddy girls, but they finally succeeded. Or did they? One thing we learned was not to pass notes. l-la. Ha. The first big thrill of our lives was when we entered into the halls of our future Alma-Mater, M.H.S. Remember, the day Earlcrnn Bush called Mr. Kukuk Charles ? Say, Earlann, what happened? We missed you the rest of the period. ln the eighth grade we settled down a little. Nothing much happened that year except that a few girls got locked out of the writing class. In the ninth grade we thought we were pretty big, because we got to choose our own subjects. Or so we thought!!! Mr. Hadley, took over Mrs. Isler's pastime ot telling fantastic stories. Remember the story about the bear which chased him up and over the hill and he ran from Ianuary to Iune? Hey, kids remember the tenth grade and second year Latin Class? How about the day loanne Hannon left her notes on her desk and then, realizing what had happened, returned to the room, where she found Mrs. Pierson holding the Latin notes in her hand? Ioanne being one of the polite l?J members of our class thanked Mrs. Pierson for them. Nice going, Ioanne!!! In our Iunior year, we lost a very welleliked teacher and friend, Mr. Steve Sonoga, who now teaches at Boardman High. Except for the one disappointment, we had loads of fun getting everything ready for prom. We had such a wonderful prom. Remember all the fun we had blowing all those balloons up? Hey, kids, remember the day of the prom picnic? Rain, rain, and more rain. We can still see Mr. Davis ccming down the midway at Idora with a raincoat and hip boots, and eating cotton candy. Mr. Davis, you were a wonderful riot. Say, remember how we used to pester Emmy every day until our class rings came in. Such devils, Huh? Then came the dav of days. We became honorable seniors. This year we looked forward to pictures, graduation, baccalaureate, prom, picnic, lun and lots of studying t?l Seriously though, in our senior year, the kids have really tried to study and make up for all the lost time. Now that our school years at good old McDonald High are gone and in the past they will remain only a memory. All we can do now, is look back at all the fun and ser- iousness of the past years. YW ? 3 MX 'ff-X 1 X 'X Xl 'EX , . Xa ROOSEVELT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WILLIAM E. REA. Principal The Roosevelt School Curriculum is made up of three integrated departments: Kindergarten, Primary School, and Intermediate School. The Kindergarten at present has two sessions, a morning and an afternoon session. The first year in school requires many adjustments for the child. This transition period calls for the closest cooperation of parents and teachers. In this connection information conceming the child's background will be helpful to the teacher. The Kindergarten is often the child's first contact outside his home. It is important that this step be taken without emotional disturbance. The wise mother explains to the child that kindergarten is an interesting and enjoyable place, offering new toys, new playmates and new adventures. In Kindergarten the child learns to take further care of himself, to work with others. and to adjust himself to a routine of school habits. The Primary School includes the three years beyond the Kindergarten. lt differs from the traditional first three grades only in the method of measuring progress. That is to say, we recognize the fact that not all pupils are ready to read at the same rate nor do they learn at the same rate. For this reason, some pupils may require four or more years to achieve what others can achieve in three years. For example, a child in the traditional second grade who does not meet the standard of achievement for that grade in his second year if failed or retained and simply repeats the year's work, whereas in the organization called the Primary School the child does not repeat what he has accomplished but continues in his third year where he left off in the PAGE second. Although reading determines very largely the rate at which children progress through the Primary School, there are many other important factors which make for the all-round education of the child. Other fundamentals taught in the Primary School include num- bers or arithmetic, writing, and spelling. Art, music, and physical education are almost equally important, be- cause they are essential to an understanding and an appreciation of the finer things of life. The Intermediate School is planned in accordance with the nature and needs of the child. The teachers of grades four, five, and six must thoroughly understand the characteristics of the pupils enrolled in these grades. Reading is still a predominant factor in the child's pro- gress, but other subjects begin to take on more impor- tance, such as arithmetic, writing, spelling, English, social studies, art, music. and physical education. All have their part in the child's growth. The proper education of the child requires not only a knowledge of the 3 R's but also the learning of desirable habits. To this end we believe every child should learn good health habits, good work habits, and how to get along with others. But that is not all. Ol even greater importance. the child must be taught a sense of moral and spiritual values, a respect for things sacred, and a love for our American ideals and traditions. The above fundamentals of education are learned by practical experience which the child gains through many and varied activities in the classroom. on the play- ground, in the gymnasium, in the assembly, and on ex- cursions. 6 B w w.. We've come so far from the Little Red School . . . the place Grandpa left to go out into the world. The simple training that he acquired in that one-room building of long ago was SO vastly different from yours! Education has leaped right along with the hurried advance of science and industry , . . and youth has discovered complexities early . . . so early that some of the most startling finds in the world of invention today have come from the minds of the very young. Take the vast store of wisdom that these years of study have given you. Take it right on to new fields of knowledge . . . to college, to business, to the career of your choice. Remember that most knowledge has been recorded in books . . . so continue to study. continue to work toward GREATER heights of perfection. Our best wishes go with you all of the way!
