Trades and Industries PHILO SHONTZ EARL SHARKEY DONALD PETERSON Roll-Turning Coordinator Machine Shop CLASS INSTRUCTORS ANDREW NESTOR ROBERT SINCLAIR WILLIAM MAGNUSON L. B. MCDERMOTT M. H. WILKINS VOCATIONAL TRADES AND INDUSTRIES PROGRAM Conducted by McDonald Board of Education In Conjunction with United States Steel Company Concept of Trade Apprentice Training The title of Trade Apprentice 'Training is used in the United States Steel Company to designate the planned program ol formalized instruction for repair and maintenance trade or cratt jobs. The term trade or craft iobs, is used to designate the journeyman jobs set iorth as apprenticiable trades. In the development of individuals to meet the performance and trade knowledge requirements of these jobs it is recognized that the training received must be a thorough, gradual process with the addition of one skill upon another and with adequate opportunity given the apprentice to apply these skills to actual jobs and to consolidate the use of the skill through trade experience. The concept of Trade Apprentice Training shall be one ol teaching the fundamental skills of the trade in the shop, supplemented by instruction in the classroom oz: these subjects which will contribute to the performance of jobs in the shop. The objective ot trade apprentice training is to develop and maintain, in the plants of the company, a com- plement of skilled tradesrnen adequate to maintain its facilities and equipment at a high degree of efficiency. To accomplish this purpose the trade education of an apprentice is based upon the following objectives: 1. To develop skill in performing the duties ot his trade. 2. To advance his technical knowledge in subjects related to his trade. 3. To impart an understanding of the problems of industrial management and the place of industry in the community. 4. To encourage continuing self-education and ambition toward advancement in the organization. Acknowledgement This is to extend an acknowledgement of our appreciation to industrial officials, especially to the Industrial Relations Department, United States Steel Company, which contributed immeasurably to the success oi our program throughout the past year. Food For Thought Kindness begets kindness. Enjoyment is sharpened by toil. True selfhood rises above selfishness. There is no greatness without goodness. To be truly conservative, one must be progressive. Every teacher is concerned with the total life of the profession. Crime comes when ideals and aspirations are weaker than impulses and appetites. Training always precedes education and the neglect of it can cripple education. To be master of a word, the child must learn a new sound, a new symbol, and a new sense. The heart of education is the love of the individual teacher for the individual child. To interpret the school to parents and citizens is as much a part of the teacher's work as the instruction of children. KFrom Emerson's Essaysl Love is the basis of courtesy. -Manners. The only gift is a portion of thyself -Gifts. The only way to have a friend is to be one. -Friendship. You cannot do wrong without suffering wrong. -Compensation. What is the hardest task in the world? To think. -Intellect. They only who build on ideas, build for eternity. -Politics. The faith that stands on authority is not faith. The Over-Soul. The power of love, as the basis of a state, has never been tried. -Politics. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. -Self-Reliance. That country is the fairest which is inhabited by the noblest minds. -Heroism. The sublime vision comes to the pure and simple soul in a clean and chaste body. -The Poet. Life is a series of surprises, and would not be worth taking or keeping if it were not. -Experience. Tho we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not. -Art. Trust men and they will be true to you: treat them greatly and they will show themselves great. -Prudence. AGE 16 l
