McDonald Public Schools McDonald, Ohio if M 'M-R' 1'11 'T'V ORENE SHERMAN DEDICATION This twenty-eighth edition of the McDonald Roller is hereby dedicated to Miss Orene Sherman, who has spent the last thirty-two fruitful years in the educational field at McDonald, who has been active in various organi- zations oi the village, and who has always taken a supreme delight in preparing boys and girls for their continuing education and for their entrance into manhood and wornanhood. She has always accepted her responsibilities with graciousness and fulfilled her assignments with pro- fessional zeal and earnestness. Miss Sherman received her elementary training in Medina County, Ohio, and her high school training in Medina. She began her teaching by having charge of eight grades in a rural school in Chatham Township, Medina County, Ohio, where she taught for a period of four years. Following this, she taught for one year in Rittman, Ohio. For the past thirty-two years she has taught the second grade in the Roosevelt elementary school in Mc- Donald. We wish her the best of life's blessings in her well-earned retirement. May she always cherish the memories of the McDonald schools. PAGE 4 HOWARD MCGOWAN Superintendent Schools THE TEACHER'S IMPRINT Ohio's Sesquicentennial, to be observed during 1953, will hold great significance for all elements of the sicte's citizenry. For none, however, are the educational potentialities greater than for school teachers and our youth. Effective utilization of these possibilities will depend to ct large extent upon the interest and resourceful- ness of teachers. The personalities who have made the Buckeye State great can live again for the state-makers of the future. An appreciation of its brilliant history can inspire a devotion to further progress. A realization of the schools' distinctive contributions to industrial, commercial, and political strength can bring deep pride, and more important, can engender a consciousness of one's participation in the states. So, in deep humility, consider the responsibility that rests upon your shoulders, For long after most of the subject matter is forgotten, he will remember your integrity, your fairness, your tolerancee-in short, the character ct you, his teacher. B. MCDERMOTT M. H. WILKINS VOCATIONAL TRADES AND INDUSTRIES PROGRAM Conducted by McDonald Board of Education In Conjunction with United States Steel Company Concept of Trade Apprentice Training The title of Trade Apprentice 'Training is used in the United States Steel Company to designate the planned program ol formalized instruction for repair and maintenance trade or cratt jobs. The term trade or craft iobs, is used to designate the journeyman jobs set iorth as apprenticiable trades. In the development of individuals to meet the performance and trade knowledge requirements of these jobs it is recognized that the training received must be a thorough, gradual process with the addition of one skill upon another and with adequate opportunity given the apprentice to apply these skills to actual jobs and to consolidate the use of the skill through trade experience. The concept of Trade Apprentice Training shall be one ol teaching the fundamental skills of the trade in the shop, supplemented by instruction in the classroom oz: these subjects which will contribute to the performance of jobs in the shop. The objective ot trade apprentice training is to develop and maintain, in the plants of the company, a com- plement of skilled tradesrnen adequate to maintain its facilities and equipment at a high degree of efficiency. To accomplish this purpose the trade education of an apprentice is based upon the following objectives: 1. To develop skill in performing the duties ot his trade. 2. To advance his technical knowledge in subjects related to his trade. 3. To impart an understanding of the problems of industrial management and the place of industry in the community. 4. To encourage continuing self-education and ambition toward advancement in the organization. Acknowledgement This is to extend an acknowledgement of our appreciation to industrial officials, especially to the Industrial Relations Department, United States Steel Company, which contributed immeasurably to the success oi our program throughout the past year. Food For Thought Kindness begets kindness. Enjoyment is sharpened by toil. True selfhood rises above selfishness. There is no greatness without goodness. To be truly conservative, one must be progressive. Every teacher is concerned with the total life of the profession. Crime comes when ideals and aspirations are weaker than impulses and appetites. Training always precedes education and the neglect of it can cripple education. To be master of a word, the child must learn a new sound, a new symbol, and a new sense. The heart of education is the love of the individual teacher for the individual child. To interpret the school to parents and citizens is as much a part of the teacher's work as the instruction of children. KFrom Emerson's Essaysl Love is the basis of courtesy. -Manners. The only gift is a portion of thyself -Gifts. The only way to have a friend is to be one. -Friendship. You cannot do wrong without suffering wrong. -Compensation. What is the hardest task in the world? To think. -Intellect. They only who build on ideas, build for eternity. -Politics. The faith that stands on authority is not faith. The Over-Soul. The power of love, as the basis of a state, has never been tried. -Politics. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. -Self-Reliance. That country is the fairest which is inhabited by the noblest minds. -Heroism. The sublime vision comes to the pure and simple soul in a clean and chaste body. -The Poet. Life is a series of surprises, and would not be worth taking or keeping if it were not. -Experience. Tho we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not. -Art. Trust men and they will be true to you: treat them greatly and they will show themselves great. -Prudence. AGE 16 l 'f I U Sen zors ,X q 's P '92, JAA' ' X Xi ' X' f , , .Kam rm! Q Zll ,,.. ,X . Miss Weikert greeted us with a big smile and we all settled down to the serious business of kindergarten. We even showed our skill by building houses out of wooden blocks. Remember Nancy, our doll? She was our pride and joy. We used to put her to bed and feed her and dress her. Then on to lirst grade and Miss Williams tMrs. Knezeak nowl and Miss Sherman. This year we were split into two dillerent grades, and how we hated it! Do you remember Bob Crouse and Bob Goodrich and the accidents they had? Boy! What a mess they made! Second grade meant real desks. We were big stuff then. Remember the thrill we used to get out of painting the big pictures Miss MacElroy made for us? Rose Durkin joined our happy crowd this year. On to the third grade and Miss Hinten, and boy! were we little devils! Hey, Punkey-how about that airplane ride she gave you! And say. Bill Eldridge-you surely do go a long way for your shoes, although Canada isn't too tar, now that we have jets. Bob White, Iohn Golubic, Martha Yothers, and Lynne Davis joined us. Fourth grade and the second floor. We were really big now. Remember Mrs. Reddinger's writing classes? And also how Peg Myers used to guard her purse ior her? What did she think ot the rest of us? This year we were honored by the presence ol three new pupils: Marion Vidak. Ronnie Wilson, and our joker, Bob Sell. Even way back then he was cracking jokes. On to the fifth grade and we were unbearable brats by then-tWe always were.J This year we had the Roush twins, and we never knew which one we were talking to. Remember Miss Albert's geography classes and her never-ending stories ol her South American tours? Sixth grade and we were the Kings of the grade school. Bebe Loblnger and Leo Bard joined us this year. We were all wrapped up in planning our graduation program. This gave us all a chance to show our hidden talents. No one could wait lor the summer to be over so that we could get inside the big building called McDonald High School. Mr. Hadley was our teacher this year, and what a job he had! Remember how we were always getting lost 'cause all the floors looked the same to us? This year Sharon Gahagan. Dick Muckridge, and Ed Bald- win joined us. Eighth grade and Leona Newhouse joined us. This year we thought we were pretty big, because we thought we knew all the ropes. And what we thought of those poor seventh graders-those underclassmen! Ninth grade. and Mr. Hadley was still our homeroom teacher-mainly because no other teacher could stand us. Mary Ann Benyo leit us this year to go to Niles. We were definitely the big wheels of the second floor. Tenth grade and again we were split up. Mr. Donaldson helped Mr. Hadley out-'we were just too much for one teacher to handle. Barb Brown and Eva Baal joined us this year. Eleventh grade, and this brought the event which we were all looking forward toAProm. lt was the biggest and the bestest prom in the history of M.H.S.-at least we thought so. And also we received our beautiful graduation rings. Were those poor underclassmen ever jealous ot us! Martha Ivy and Bob Allen joined us, and Bob Goodrich leit us because of illness. Twelfth grade and our goal was reached-we were seniors at last. Now our date book was filled-eeven bulging at the seams. First came our pictures. What a shock some ol us had! Next came invitationsfthen Prom. The juniors did a wonderful job, but it could never compare with ours!-but whose could? Then came the solemn baccalaureate. And finally that long-awaited day arrived-Graduation! Most of us cried, even though we had often thought oi quitting because things didn't go our way. But we all agree it surely summed up to be something wonderful, and we'll always look back on those days as the best days in our life. We'll never forget dear old M.H. EF, CLASS PROPHECY One day in the year of 1963, while sun bathing in Eddie Baba's mushroom cart, Sam got an idea, and little Al quickly seconded the motion. Sam wanted to tour the U.S. and get a good idea how our fellow classmates were getting along. We found our first classmate only two miles away in the great metropolis of Girard. lt was Mike Barkovich, who was the owner of a chain of theaters, and whom should we see in the lobby but head ticket ripper Lynne Davis. We asked Mike if he had heard from any of the classmates. Mike said that the only ones he had heard from were Mike Stofko, who was leading a safari through Africa, and Davie Kaercher, who was pole vaulting in the Olympics. From here we went to Youngstown and found Iohn Maysak's lFit Alll Shoe Store, whose motto is lf the shoes don't fit, the boxes will. Also there in Youngstown we found Dick Muckridge, who was dish-washer at Grant's. On our famous TV channel H.A.M.S. we found that Bob Sell and Bob Evans are leading comedians cn the Comedy Hour. But they're not the only attractions on TV: Ed Zajac is the strongman on Sealtest Circus. Well, enough for Youngstown. On to Denison, Ohio, where we find Bill Eldridge head cheerleader for Dennison College. Also in the small town of Denison, Bob White has his own photography studio, called the Shutter and Putter. While leaving Denison, we were passed by the first jet car we had ever seen, with none other than Peg Myers at the wheel. She is now a world-famous stock-car driver. Early the next morning we pulled into Factory Laden, Illinois, where we found Carlene Spjut had her Non-Smear lipstick factory. Carlene gave us our first bad news of the trip-Babs Brown was in the hospital with a nervous breakdown which had occurred when all her boyfriends had gotten a leave from the army at the same time. She also told us that Lois Fritz, had made good in Holly- wood as Marilyn Monroe's understudy. After leaving Carlene, we found Ronald Wilson, who had struck oil and is now a millionaire and has his lifetime wish of being popular with the girls. While we were visiting Ronnie, he gave us the lowdown on Fred Plecha, whose picture is now on the Gilette Razor Blade ads the has the 5 o'clock shadowj. Also famous in the advertising world we found Martha Ivy, who is advertising Pepsodent for The Smile of Beauty. From here we left Ron and started on our way to Moosejaw, Montana. About half way to Moosejaw we noticed that the termite special in which we were riding was in need of some petrol. So we pulled into the first gas station we saw, which was Friends' I-'riendly Service Station, owned and operated by Shirlee Friend and hubby. We had a long talk with Shirl, who told us of Sharon Gahagen and Lee Newhouse, who were dancing instructors at Arthur Murray's studio in Cactus Gulch, Montana, suburb of Moosejaw. Shirl also told us of Rodney Banish, who is owner of his own dancing studio called The Stumble Tumble. From here we left Shirl and went on into Moosejaw, where we found two school chums, Dick Cartwright and Leo Bard. Dick was giving trumpet lessons to the Indians on the Heap Squaw Reservation, and Leo Bard, who has been sta- tioned with the Navy, had just been made Admiral of the Ship's Life Buoy. We asked Dick and Red if they had heard from Iohnny Golubic, and they informed us that he was head football coach at Vassar University, lgirls school, you bone- headj. From here we decided to take off for home. Everything went swell 'till we pulled into Pittsburgh, and there the old buggy just wouldn't run any more. So we decided to take a cab to the railroad station. As Sam flagged down a cab, we noticed that Martha Yothers was driving. On the way to the railroad station, Martha told us that Kennon Phillips was happily married and was athletic director at Austintown Fitch, and that Vicky Popp has her own beauty shop. Their specialty is dyeing hair. Well, it was a quick trip from there back to McDonald. After arriving and parting and going hcme, we decided to look around town for the classmates who after graduation had made a success in their home town. We decided to stop at our Alma-Mater. Who do you think we found teaching French at old M.H.S.? None other than jane Casale. And we found that Rose Marie Durkin had made a success, and that she is now principal at the grade school. While at the High School, we had a talk with some of the teachers, who informed us that Carleen Ryan and Tom Witkoski are still going steady and thinking of getting married any year now. Also that Bebe Lobinger finally got a job and Larry said yes. From the high school we went to the class of 53's old hang-out, where Jeannette Sudol and Marion Vidak were running a parking lot. From here we went to the Summer Swimming Resort at Lake Fibby in McDonald and found Eileen lFritzl Killin diving champion. Well, having found out our classmates' success we decided we had better get back to our own professions. Sam left for his TV show, and Al decided he'd better get abck and see if Paul Brown still needed a water boy. Immortal Youth The stars shall fade away. the sun himself Grow dim wih age, and nature sink in years: But thou shalt flourish in immortal youth, Unhurt amidst the war of elements, The wreck of matter and the crash of worlds. tfrom Cato, by Ioseph Addison? ALBERT PLECHA tM.H.S. - '43l As an aviator, Albert served in the United States Forces, operating a let-F84 plane in Korea. He died in active service in Taegu, Korea, on Septem- ber lO, 1952. High Flight Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings: Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. tby Iohn Gillespie Magee, Ir.l KARL CVETNIC Karl was a fifth-grade student in the Roosevelt Elementary School. He met an untimely death by a bolt of lightning during a thunderstorm on Satur- day evening, September 6, 1952, in the immediate neighborhood of the McDon- ald High School football field. The Reaper and the Flowers 'My Lord has need of these flowerets gay', The Reaper said, and smiled: Dear tokens of the earth are they, Where He was once a child. Oh, not in cruelty, not in wrath, The Reaper came that day: 'Twas an angel visited the green earth, And took the flowers gay. tby Henry Wadsworth Longfellow? YOU AND I by Martha Yothers There's always an l where a You should be, When one thinks only of himself. Why can't we learn to discard the I And put it on the shelf? lust think of what a better place This world of ours would be, If everyone would say, You first Instead of, After me. MY LOVE by Ioanne Krossman Over the powder blue sky Sails the pale yellow moon. Over mountains and hills It creeps. And soon the darkness fades And he doesn't come. Oh Love, where can You be? And once again The pale yellow moon Looks down upon me And seems to say, He's with another. WHAT IS IN A NAME? by James Snyder What is in a name, that you make or destroy? Mr. Baker was looking at the babies through the window of the infant ward, and it seemed that every baby there was crying. Why are they bawling? he asked the nurse. Listen, she said severely, if you were only a few days old, without any clothes, out ot a job, and owed the government almost 51,700 on the na- tional debt, you'd be bawling too! Mr. Donaldson: I forgot my umbrella this morning. His wife: When did you realize it was missing? Mr. Donaldson: When I raised my hand to close it after the rain stopped. Mr. Baker: How did you make this cake, dear? Mrs. Baker: Here's the recipe. I clipped it from a magazine. Mr. Baker: Are you sure you read the right side? The other side tells how to make a rock garden. Mr. Braden in Drugstore ton Sunday rnorningl: Please give me change for a dime. Druggist: Here it is. I hope you'll enjoy the sermon. Miss Newlonz Do you believe in clubs for women? Mrs. Wible: Yes, if kindness fails. Cop, to Mrs. Pierson parked illegally: Lady, can't you read? Mrs. Pierson: Why certainly. The sign says fine for parking. Mrs. Meek: I never saw anything as tough as these steaks. You will if I call the cook. Mr. Golubic: Do you know any reliable rule for estimating the cost of living? Dick Cartwright: Yes. Take your income, whatever that may be, and add 25 per cent. Wife: I read about a man who speaks eight languages who married a woman who speaks four. Mr. Kukuk: That seems to be about the right handicap. Mrs. Sonoga: I think men should wear something to show they're mar- ried. Women wear wedding rings. Mr. Sonoga: Men wear something to show they're married. They wear last year's clothes. At a village store in the Blue Ridge country, the old proprietor was trying to sell a wastebasket to a hillbilly. Sales resistance was in the set of the bearded man's chin. How come I need a basket?
