Attending games, cheering at assemblies and holding meetings are among the many activities of the club. The members sold feathers, pom-pons, megaphones, and programs. They raised the money so that the club might meet its expenses. The Pep Club decorated the stage for the Varsity Ball and purchased the flowers for the queen and her attendants. Mrs. Campbell, as sponsor, Isabelle Robertson, president: Shirl Boynes, vice presi- dent: Beverly Cameron, secretaryg and Marion Thomassy, treasurer, have worked dili- gently to see that the purpose of the club has been carried out. JUNIOR PEP CLUB The '59 cheerleaders, dressed in traditional red and white, ustrutted their stuff during foot- ball and basketball seasons and at pep assemblies. Their vigor and enthusiam have helped to keep high the loyalty and school spirit which are traditions of McDonald High School. Under the leadership of head cheerleader, Isabelle Robertson, the girls practiced diligently, learning new cheers and perfecting their routines. Mrs. Campbell, their capable sponsor, has in- spired the girls to do their best. PEP CLUB UFFICERS SEATED lleft to right? - Isabelle Robertson, Mrs. Campbell, and Shirl Boynes. Anestis, helps to prepare its mem- bers for their future professional life. Through the club the 20 members have the opportunity to do substitute teaching and to become familiar with the duties of a teacher. ln order to be a member of the club, a B average must be maintained. The officers of the club are Helen Marie Fini, president: Cynthia Hockey, secretary: Edythe Joz- wiakowski, vice presidentg William Tornabene, treasurerg and Mary Beth Hampson, historian. The projects of the F.T.A. through the year include informal talks given by former members who are now attending college, a trip to the Pittsburgh School of the Blind, a visit to WQED, and a dance. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The Future Homemakers of America had a very successful year. Under the leadership of Miss Ammons, head of the Home Economics Depart- ment, the club engaged in numerous activities. The installation of officers was held early in the fall. The officers are Patty Hart, president: Sally Sawhill, vice president: Cynthia Hookey, secretary: Marianne Siry, treasurer: Virginia Gil- bert, historiang and Sandra Hoffman, degree chair- man. The club raised money by selling candy at the home basketball games. The most important activity of F.H.A. is the annual Mother and Daughter banquet. This event is held each year in the spring. At this time, the daughters honor their mothers. F.H.A. closed the school year with a picnic held at a nearby park. LATIN CLUB The Latin Club had a very successful and busy year. Like many of the clubs of McDonald High School, the Latins raised money for field trips and banquets. To accomplish this, the club sold stationery and sponsored a dance. The club went to the Buhl Planetarium to vis- it the Latin Exhibit in which some of the mem- bers had entered an exhibit. They saw a show on the stars in the days of glorious Rome. The annual Saturnalia, which is a Roman banquet carried out in Roman fashion, was held late in December. The menu is entirely Roman with cheese, olives, bread, and honey. At this time, the new members were welcomed into the club. This year, the Latins had a mascot. The familiar gentleman is Mucius Scaevola who was a distinguished Roman. Mrs. Campbell is the sponsor and the officers are James Valentour, president: Thomas Strimel, vice president: Janet Heron, secretary: Isabelle Robertson, treasurer: and Betty Siry, reporter. The Pan-American Club, sponsored by Mrs. Rosana Campbell, is one of the most colorful or- ganizations in lVl.H.S. This club does many things to brighten up the school, both in atmosphere and in color. Through the club, the members are made familiar with the language and customs of the Latin American people. The club meetings are held the first and third Mondays of each month. The club members had an interesting initia- tion of the first year students when the first year students were compelled to dress as Spaniards. This year's many activities included singing Spanish Christmas carols through the halls. the PAN-AMERICAN CLUB breaking of a pinata at the Christmas party, and a merienda. Another important activity of the club is the writing of letters to high school students in the Latin American countries. This enables the club members to more fully understand the attitudes and customs of their south-of-the-border neighbors. The club also sponsored a very successful dance. One of the most outstanding events of the year was the field trip to Pittsburgh to see jose Greco, famous Spanish dancer, and his troupe. Officers of the club were Dennis Cooper, president: Robert Glass, vice president: Jane Hugh- ey, secretary: Marion Thomassy, treasurer: and Barbara Allison, reporter. Frequent summer practices paid off in the finished performances of the following fall. The band. under the direction of Mr. Harvey Lederstein, had a very successful year. Marching at football games and going through the intricate formations worked out by Mr. Leder- stein were the main activities of the fall season. Other activities included marching in the Emanci- pation Day parade and the l-lallowe'en parade. A well-received concert was given at Christ- mas time. Following the concert, the band had a party for the members of the audience. The band won the first round of the Forensic Contest by elimination and advanced to the district contest. b Contrast in Sound was the theme of the an- nual spring concert presented on April I 7. Officers elected early in the year included David Pletincks, president: Robert Lamb, vice presidentg Robert Glass, secretary-treasurer: Bever- ly Cameron and Ross Sigley, librarians: Dominic Goheo and James Heron, managers. ENGINEERS CLUB The E.ngineer's Club this year upheld its new constitution by insisting upon high academic stand- ards for all members, Those who dropped below a B in more than one subject at the close of each six-week period were placed on probation. If the record did not improve by the close of the following report period, membership in the club was terminated. An effort was made to give some training in the social graces and to broaden experiences for the members. An evening of relaxation was enjoyed when a trip was made to Carnegie Music Hall to hear a concert by the world famous guitarist, An- dres Segovia. Other Held trips included a visit ta the Buhl Planetarium to witness the engineering and mathematics displays of the school science fair, and the annual trip to the University of Pittsburgh Engineering Open I-louse. For the school open house displays the boys divided into committees. From the work of these groups, nine very colorful projects were constructed and displayed for viewing, each representing a phase of engineering. The group leaders rated their mem- bers according to initiative, co-operation and quality of work. Members of the Executive Council for the year were: Robert Bastide, president: Robert Lamb, vice president: David Pletincks, secretary: Gary Augustine, treasurer: James Valentour, Wil- liam Tornabene, and Robert Glass, class representa- tives. Who has club news this time? Now remember everything must be in and typed ready to go down to the 'Record- Outlook' Wednesday after school. William I-lyser, and his assistants, Meade McKee and Thomas Strimel. The other staffs included the editorial, whose members, in addition to the editor and assistant These were familiar questions and comments heard by the Chronicle staff, which is also known as the Journalism class. Somehow the editor, David Pletincks, who was ably assisted by Mary Beth Hampson and Ross Sigley, always managed to see that enough material was written, typed and sent down to the Record-Outlook on time. Publishing the Chronicle gave the staff ex- perience in composition, sharpened its contacts with the public, and its business ability. In spite of all the financial headaches, the bills have all been paid, thanks to the advertising staff, headed by editors were: Elizabeth Siry. LAUREL The Laurel this year, as every other, was the product of hard work and the co-operation of all the committees: but unlike other years, its 1959 creators had a special assignment. Since the 1959 Laurel would be the last, it had to be a Laurel that could bring the old halls of lVl.H.S. to life again simply by turning its pages. The editorial staff, with David Pletincks as editor, was responsible for all the cutting, mailing, pasting, writing, and in general the composition of the book. The advertising staff, Ending its job much more difficult than in the past, solicited ads which was a major project for raising funds. The art staff did the sketches seen through- out the book. The business staff took the lead in raising money and soliciting subscriptions. The circulation staff distributed the finished Laurels. The sports staff compiled the statistics and other information concerning sports. The graduating class would sincerely like to thank the advertisers and patrons for their contri- butions toward making the I959 Laurel a success, and last but by no means least, we would like to thank Miss Kirk for her patience and time. The Kem Klub, which was not organized until the second semester, chose for its officers James Valentour, president: Victor Mazzocco, vice president: and Janet Heron, secretary-treasurer. Meetings were held every two weeks during the class period. At many of the meetings, chemical KEM KLUB experiments were performed by members of the club. Incidentally all the experiments were successful with the help of Mr. Blockowicz. the club's sponsor. Among club activities were a Held trip to Buhl Planetarium and a record hop ending a short but successful club year. FIRST ROW Cleft to right! - Robert Bernhart, Joyce Daout. ATHLETIC COUNCIL The McDonald High School Athletic Coun- cil concluded its final year of rendering services at McDonald High School. The council was respon- sible for the advertising of games, providing tickets for the game, buying athletic equipment, sponsoring sports banquets, and providing transportation for away games. The membership of the organization is com- prised of faculty, school board, and senior high representatives. The officers of the organization are Mr. Earl Cameron, Jr., president: Mr. Louis Thomassy, vice president: and lVlr. Benjamin Sta- sko, secretary-treasurer. The faculty members are Mr. Edward Hepe and Mr. James C-arry. Student representatives are Meade McKee, senior: William Tornabene, junior: and Martin Schottenheimer, sophomore. The Council also held an all-sports banquet this year and bought basketball equipment, presented awards at the Awards Assembly and provided for the care of the football equipment. The goal of the Lettermen's Club has always been to promote a high standard of sportsmanship and to have good relations with opponents in all athletic events. Composed of boys who take part in sports activities at lVl.l'l.S., this organization is a contri- buting factor in the successful athletic program of the school. Isabelle Robertson, this year's Varsity Ball Queen, was chosen by the Lettermen's Club. The LETTERMEN'S CLUB Club worked hard in decorating for the dance and in contributing to its success. 5 Dale Miller was chosen as the I959 athlete of the year. This is another decision made by the club. The coaches, lVlr. Garry and Mr. I-lepe, and the members of the club have worked hard for another year so that the club could maintain its chief goal, that of sportsmanship. FOOTBALL SQUAD The McDonald Red Devils ended their I959 season. and the last one for lVlcDonaIcI High, with three wins. four losses and one tie. Mr. Garry was the head coach with Mr. Hepe as his assistant. The tie was a 0-0 deadlock with Hickory. The score doesn't tell half the facts of the game because the Devils played good ball but couIcIn't capitalize. There were ten seniors on the squad which had what might be called a fairly successful season. Season's Record MCDONALD OPPONENTS 0 ............. .... S outh Fayette .................... Left to right - Charles Lienard, Raymond Miller, Duane Galloway, William Brown, Richard Cook, David Pletincks, Dwight Henderson. One of the hardest working and least ap- preciated groups of boys in any high school is a group of boys better known as managers. It is the duty of the managers to take care of all sports equipment, line the field for home foot- ball games, keep sports statistics and be prepared with the first aid kit. MANAGERS The managers, who work long and hard dur- ing the football and basketball season, are also the object of practical jokes. They take all of the joy when the players are feeling in high spirits and are the center of abuse when the players are feeling low. These boys, who have a thankless job, deserve a lot of credit. tLeft to right? - Marianne Siry, Edythe Jozwiakowski, Judith Albertini, Marion Thomassy, Karen Cook Mary Beth Hampson, Sandra Montgomery, Regis Smith, Isabelle Robertson, the queen, Meade McKee, Janet Heron, Ann Carol Hospodar, Beverly Cameron, Sally Sawhill, Shirl Boynes, Elizabeth Siry, Patricia Latini Helen Marie Fini, Thomas Campbell, Red Devil , Nancy Cameron, crownbearer. VARSITY BALL At the sound of marching feet and the ap- pearance of the red and white uniformed honor guard, the 1959 Varsity Ball honoring all sports was under way. This year's ball, the last of its kind, was traditional in its red and white decorations, pretty girls, and regal queen. Fifteen girls in pastel ball gowns graced the queen's court along with the spirit of IVI.H.S., the Red Devil, who was Tommy Campbell, and Nan- cy Cameron carrying the crown, the symbol of royalty. The queen elect, Isabelle Robertson, was es- corted to the throne by honorary co-captain Regis Smith. Meade McKee, also elected honorary co- captain, crowned Isabelle, and for the rest of the evening she reigned as queen of lVI.I-I.S. The beautiful decorations, heavenly music, clicking of cameras, parents' approval and the mer- riment of the ball all combined to make it a mem- orable occasion.
