Mr. Blocko- wicz was assisted by Mr. Scarci. Only live seniors were on the squad. McDonald played its best hall against South Side and Claysville and seemed to let down against their other op- ponents. lVlcDonald's eighth game, with Avella, was cancelled due to the influenza epidemic. South Fayette, Cecil, Midway. Brentwood, and Hickory all scored victories over McDonald. Howard Bellaire, McDonald co-captain, was named on the Washington-Greene County first team. BAND and MAJORETTE Leading the band were six high-stepping majorettes. These girls added color to the band as they demonstrated their abilities in twirling and marching. The majorettes perfected their feats only after long hours of summer practices at the school and down at the football field in the evenings. The band lost Mr. Mruk in January. He was replaced by Mr. Harvey Lederstein, who did a very commendable job. The band is fortunate in losing only live seniors this year. We feel that the band and majorettes have done an outstanding job and hope they will continue to do so. The officers of the band include: Joye Masquelier, presidentg David Pletincks. vice presidentg Robert Lamb, secretary-treasurer: Beverly Cameron, librarian. l IltS'l' RUNV lla-fl to right? - Joyv Mnsquolivr, David Pletincks, lleyvrly Cnmvron. The McDonald High School Athletic Council rendered another year of fine service in the scheduling of and advertising games, pro- viding tickets for games, buying athletic equipment, sponsoring sports banquets, and providing transportation for away games. School board, faculty, and senior high school representatives comprise the membership of the organization. The officers are: Mr. H. M. Pettit, president: Mr. Earl Cameron, Jr., vice president: and lVlr. Benjamin Stasko, secretary-treasurer. Faculty members are lVlr. Edward Blockowicz, Mr. Edward Hepe, and Mr. Frank Scarci. Student representatives are: Richard Scott, senior: Robert Bastide, junior: and William Tornabene, sophomore. An all-sports banquet was held this year by the council. They also bought basketball equipment, presented awards at the Awards Assembly, and provided care for the football field. The new basket- ball uniforms were the outstanding items of equipment bought this year. Behind our athletic teams is a group of hard-working boys known as the managers. The managers should receive extra credit because they have served faithfully throughout the football and basketball seasons. They worked long and hard keeping up the Old McDonald Spirit for the players. They have to take the jokes when the players are in good moods and they are the object of everything ANAGERS when the players lose their tempers. Among their many and varied responsi- bilities are the care of equipment, lining of the Held for home games, keeping sports statistics, and being prepared with a first-aid kit. What would we do without the managers? Let's recognize the managers and give them the appreciation that is due. The highlight of the Football Dance was the crowning of the Queen, Ruth Ann Daniels. As her Maid of Honor, the queen chose Head Cheerleader Peggy Masquelier. In an impressive ceremony, the Queen was escorted to her throne by Howard Bellaire and crowned by Gene Penberthy, l957 football co-captains. The Queen was at- tended by the cheerleaders, the Pep Club officers, and the senior majorettes. Patricia Howell was crown bearer and Keith Kovach was the Red Devil. The purpose of the club is to give pro- spective teachers an idea of what school teach- ing involves and also to give them some prac- tical experience by observing classes and doing some student teaching. The members of the club render a definite service by substituting for teachers. The club began its year with a spaghetti dinner, prepared and served by the officers. The guest of honor, Miss Kirk, gave the members practical information on colleges. Several members attended a meeting on special education at Hempfield Area Senior High, Greensburg, and also the Washington County meeting of all F.T.A. members at California State Teachers' College. Along with observing classes in other schools, the members visited one of the special schools for underprivileged children in Pitts- burgh, took part in the play, The Other Side of the Desk, along with the Engineers Club, and met jointly with the F.T.A. from Midway and Hickory. Tuesday and Friday found most of the McDonald boys counting their pennies on their way to the gym. Five cents was the price for an hour-'s en- tertainment of watching the girls play basketball in the newly-organized G.A.A. tournaments. The G.A.A. was reorganized in the fall of '57 by Miss Doris Dawson, the sponsor. At that time the club chose the following officers: Rose Lesjak, presidentg Marsha Powell, vice president: Mary Hampson, secretaryg Jean Gaitens, treasurer: Sandra Montgomery, pub- licity chairman. ' The club's purpose is to help each member develop the qualities of sportsmanship, courtesy, co-operation, fair play, and leadership through participation in sports. The game began with the Flower Bowl Tournament. ln this mix-up tournament, Foul- able Freshmen found themselves playing on the same teams with Sporty Sophomores, Jumping juniors, and Speedy Seniors. These games re- vealed a sink-em-all Sophomore Fern Smith. A few of the other sharpshootin stars were Gay- nelle Scott, Joette Russell, and Nancy Hamp- son. The clash of the classes was the second basketball tournament. Each class was repre- sented by two teams. ln this round robin series each team played seven games. The deserving Seniors received gold charms. The underclassmen with the highest number of points received letters. Ruth Ann Daniels, this year's Football Queen, was chosen by the Lettermen's Club. Richard Scott was chosen as the 1958 athlete of the year. This is another decision made by the club. The ofiicers of the club are Gene Pen- berthy, presidentg Richard Scott, vice presidentg and Regis Smith, secretary-treasurer. The coaches, Mr. Hepe, Mr. Blockowicz, and Mr. Scarci, and the officers of the club have worked hard for another year so that the club could maintain its chief goal, that of sportsman- ship. Most Valuable Player --- 1953 Richard Scott was selected as the Most Valuable Player of i958 by the members of the l..ettermen's Club. Richard won two letters in basketball. l-le was a member of three section champion- ship teams and was captain of the basketball team in his senior year. l-le was chosen be- cause of his line play on the basketball court, his character, scholarship, and his leadership ability. . The '58 Chronicle, under the supervision of Miss Kirk and published by the journalism class, was very successful although it was some- what difiicult hnding material, getting it checked, typed, and sent to press on time. A project such as publishing a newspaper gave the students experience in composition. the usage of good English, and responsibility. The students have to obtain money by securing advertisements from local businesses. This gives the students a chance to get out and associate with the public. In spite of the financial headaches, all bills have been paid. The advertising staff, headed by Tom Lemon, and his assistant, Gene Penberthy, did a good job of getting advertisements. The editorial staff, under the leadership of Ruth Ann Daniels, assisted by joye Mas- quelier, Judith Randour, Joette Russell, and Patricia Berry, did a very efficient job in getting the material assembled. The other staffs. includ- ing art, headed by Ellen Bednar, assisted by William Miller and Henry Moreau: circulation, headed by Nona Stierheim, assisted by Peggy Masquelier. Mary Novak, and Gloria Hennong business, headed by Rose Lesjak, assisted by Jo Etta Simpson and Marsha Powell: girls' sports, C-aynelle Scott, and boys' sports. John Nolte. The Chronicle staff would like to express its appreciation to the businesses of McDonald and surrounding communities for their co-operation and patronage and say a hearty, sincere Thank you. Without their help the '58 Chronicle would not have been possible. QS gd f K in N- wf . X - 5 YQ W N S 5. r A X . 1, x . N U sk . . .N - ..-. .fy . N - . kww--. - - 2 x e .5 X 5 , L NNQSQ 1 51. AUREL STAFF The i958 Laurel is a very good example of what American youth can do if and when they are presented with a task. The students of this school, as well as the seniors, can be very proud of this edition of the Laurel. The book is based on the Seasons of the Year. This theme was chosen by the editorial staff of the Laurel at the beginning of the year. The Editorial Staff, headed by jack McDowell as Editor-in-Chief, was responsible for keeping the rest of the staffs busy. We feel our Business Staff did an excel- lent job in securing advertisements and subscrip- tions. Money was also raised by means of a 25c dance, the annual boxing glove game and the selling of magazines. The class as a whole did a good job of soliciting names of patrons. The Art Staff, directed by Mr. Davis, is responsible for the fine artwork on the division pages. The Sports Staff is responsible for statis- tics and sports information found in our book. The Circulation Staff is in charge of making sure everyone receives his Laurel. The class wishes to express its deepest thanks to Mrs. Virginia Bee and Mr. Benjamin Stasko, who took over in the absence of Miss Kirk, for their fine assistance and guidance. We also wish to thank all of the patrons and advertisers, without whose financial help our yearbook could not have been possible. They began to draw up and construct a scale model of the Fort Cherry jr. and Sr. High School. The boys, under the di- rection of Miss Campbell and Mr. Stasko, worked many hours to perfect the building and surrounding area. The project, which was per- fect in almost every respect, was displayed on Open House Night. The project was explained Open House Night by Robert Lamb, Robert Bastide, and Robert Bernhart. The E.ngineer's Club, which is a relatively new club in M.l-l.S., was sponsored by Miss june Campbell and Mr. Benjamin Stasko. The requirement of the club is that students have at least a B average in Mathematics and Science. The club is open to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. One of the main purposes of the club is to acquaint prospective engineers with the moral GI EEIPS CLUB and social responsibilities of entering the en- gineering profession. Citizenship and conduct are stressed over and above all academic require- ments. The members have upheld these high principles as demonstrated by the fact that they received a special letter of commendation on their attitude and behavior during the University of Pittsburgh field trip in March. The Other Side of the Desk, written by Miss June Campbell, was produced by the Future Teachers of America and the Engineer's Club. The play was written specifically for the teachers of the Fort Cherry School District. It was presented for them on February I7 in the McDonald Auditorium. The officers of the club are Robert Bas- tide, president: John McDowell, treasurer: and Robert Lamb, secretary. The officers are Karen Purdy, presi- denteg Bill Tornabene, vice presidenteg Pauline Eiler, secretariag Susie Randour, tesorerag Carol Eiler, reportera. Our club activities include reviewing books with Latin background: singing and dancing to Spanish musicg playing gamesg working puzzles: reading pen pal letters: Spanish movies, etc. Once a year we trek off in our chartered bus to a performance of famous Spanish dancers such as Jose Greco or Carmen Amaya. At Christmas, the club celebrates the an- nual Las Pasadas. The first-year students become P.A.C. members in February at an exciting initiation party where a pinata is broken. In March the newcomers return the party with a merienda. Before the year comes to a close, there must be una comida of frijoles and tortillas - and perhaps a picnic later on in the spring, but the big day for the P.A.C. is April I4, Pan- American Day.
