PEP CLUB FULFILLS PURPOSE The Pep Club is the basis of Olll' school spirit. lts purpose is to give pep and Clit-l1llSl1lSl1l to the football and basketball teams and to pro- IIIOYO school spirit by 01lL'Ol1l'llgll1g the students to take part i11 the assemblies, to attend the foot- ball and basketball games, and to support all sehool activities. The Pep Club, under the guid- auee of the ehee1'lea1le1's, also works for good S1l0l'tSlIl11l1Sl1lP and leaclorsllip. The club is composed of the Cl1OCl'l0iIKlC1'S, band 1I1OlllbOl'S. illlll the football and basketball teams. The Senior High Pep Club The Pep Club also works 011 1lifTe1'e11t pro- jects. This year the club sold football pins and prograius. as well as Heil Devil peus. It was responsible for the Cl0C01'21tl011S of the Football Dance and for the ilowers earrietl by tl1e Queen and her Zltf0lKlillli'S. EL CLUB PAN-AMERICA ADDS COLOR TO M. H. S. lil Club Pan-Aineriea, one of the most col- orful organizations of Mellonald High School, has had a very sueeessful year. The members of this elub are made familiar with the language and customs of the Iiatiu Ameriean people. Club meetings are held on the second a11d third Mon- days of the month. The Pan ilh1l10l'lK'iilll Club is very aetive throughout -the year. For . Open llouse, eluh members deeorated their room with a Spanish fiesta motif. lu the eeuter of the room they hung a pinata, which is tilled with candy, fruit, and nuts. One of the high points of the iiesta is the breaking of the pinata, which is done by blind- folded players who swing at it with a stiek. After it is broken. its contents are shared by all. At Christmas time the elub held a Christmas party at whieh Spanish songs were sung, and Spanish inusie provided a lively beat for dancing. A Christinas dinner was also held in the Home Economies Room. Ainong' the other aetivities of the elub, a Merienda was held. A nierienda is a Spanish tea at which Spanish food is served and their native dress is worn. The club also spon- sored one very successful dance. One of the outstanding events of the year was the Held trip to Pittsburgh to see the opera Uarmen . Everyone enjoyed this diljferent ex- perience. A Another important activity of the elub is the writing of letters to high sehool students of other countries, espeeially the Latin American countries. This enables elub members to more fully lll1tlC1'Sfil1lLl the attitudes and customs of their soutli-of-the-border neighbors. The Pan-Anieriean Club is under the cap- able sponsorship of Mrs. Campbell, who is head of the Spanish Departnient.
