S. lil Club Pan-Aineriea, one of the most col- orful organizations of Mellonald High School, has had a very sueeessful year. The members of this elub are made familiar with the language and customs of the Iiatiu Ameriean people. Club meetings are held on the second a11d third Mon- days of the month. The Pan ilh1l10l'lK'iilll Club is very aetive throughout -the year. For . Open llouse, eluh members deeorated their room with a Spanish fiesta motif. lu the eeuter of the room they hung a pinata, which is tilled with candy, fruit, and nuts. One of the high points of the iiesta is the breaking of the pinata, which is done by blind- folded players who swing at it with a stiek. After it is broken. its contents are shared by all. At Christmas time the elub held a Christmas party at whieh Spanish songs were sung, and Spanish inusie provided a lively beat for dancing. A Christinas dinner was also held in the Home Economies Room. Ainong' the other aetivities of the elub, a Merienda was held. A nierienda is a Spanish tea at which Spanish food is served and their native dress is worn. The club also spon- sored one very successful dance. One of the outstanding events of the year was the Held trip to Pittsburgh to see the opera Uarmen . Everyone enjoyed this diljferent ex- perience. A Another important activity of the elub is the writing of letters to high sehool students of other countries, espeeially the Latin American countries. This enables elub members to more fully lll1tlC1'Sfil1lLl the attitudes and customs of their soutli-of-the-border neighbors. The Pan-Anieriean Club is under the cap- able sponsorship of Mrs. Campbell, who is head of the Spanish Departnient. The otiieers of the Pan Anieriean Club are: Patricia Bennett, presidentg Harvey Brookins, vice presidentg Margie Beth Hull, seeretaryg Alice l.ienard, treasurer: illlll Rosemary Mor- gan, reporter. JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE ACTIVE The Latin Club, as the Junior Classieul League is most frequently ealled, has had tl very active and successful year. This small but im- pressive group always inanages to till its year with many projects and activities. The Club sponsored ii very successful dance on J amuury 6. In December, its members held at Saturmilin which is n Ronum banquet. At the Saturnalia the native dress of the Romans, togns, are worn. Ronnln food is served, and the feast is eaten in a reclining position. A program of en- tertzximnent was put on by different members of the elub. One of the most important activities of the Latin Club each year is the tield trip to the Ruhl Planetarium. Each school sends different pro- jects nnule by their members. These are judged and prizes are given to the best. This year Mrs. Campbell and her students went to see Cineraina Holiday. This day will be long remembered by the whole Club. E The Latin Club holds its meetings on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. Every- one looks forward to these meeting because they are always enjoyable. PROJECTOR CLUB AIDS AUDIO-VISUAL PROGRAM The purpose of the Projector Club is to teach students how to run the inany practical niaehines used in the audio-visual program of the school. lt is hoped that at least one elub nxenxber will be present in every class. lflaeli lll0lllllOl' is insfrlwted personally by the elub sponsor, Mr. Bloekowiez, who in turn decides whether or not the nlexnber is qualified to run the lll2l0l1lll0. The equipment includes an opaque projec-for, several spotlights, a newly- purehased projector, and a new reeord iuaehine. The new projec-tor, whieh has already assisted several team-lu-rs besides providing a form of en- tertaininent for the students. has beeonxe a pop- ular addition to The Projector Club. The pro- jeetor is a eouvertihle type machine which can either projevf an image on a regular screen or projevt the image on a frosted glass sereen which is attaa-In-fl to the nnlehine. The spotlights are in continuous use during the year by various organizations. The opaque projector is used to project pictures in books or niagazines onto the screen so that many can View the picture at once. The new rem-ord machine, which can also be converted into a P. A. system, is used at fifteen-cent danees. The inaehine, Nvhieli plays any size record at all speeds, is also used in the music department. At dances only inenihers of the elub are allowed, to run the inaelline. . Mr. llloekowiez has done a fine job since he took over as sponsor of the ,Projector Club. ln fact his job as sponsor will probably beconie bigger in the next few years since the use of audio-visual aids is becoming a more and more popular method of edueation. This task was carried out with the aid of Miss Kirk, who is the publications advisor. The 19549 illll'0lllL'lO was very successful. thanks to the efforts ot' the journalism class and its very capable editor, Fernand Thomassy. Al- though it was sometimes ditlieult to get all the material checked illlll typed. everything always turned out all right as the material went to press. - .X project, such as publishing a school paper, provides the students with many benelits. First ot all, the students must obtain the money with which to publish it. This is done by secur- ing advertisement from the local businesses. This gives the student a chance to get out and meet- and deal with the public. Secondly, thc material to go into the newspaper must he sought. checked, typed. and tu1'ned in to he sent to the press. All this gives the student ex- perience in composition. responsibility, and the usage of good lflnglish. The advertising stalt under the leadership of Gary tlhiit and l1is assistant, ,liob Johnston, did a very successful job, even though it sonic- times grew ditlicult. Q., The editorial statf, headed by Fcrnand Tlioniassy, assisted by Carole Louise Campbell and Mary Ellen Kloppel, did a very etlicient job in getting the material assembled. All of the oth- er staffs. including business, headed by Louis Masquelier. assisted by Donald Perrardg circu- lation. headed by llonna Perrardg and sports, headed hy Milton Powell and assisted by Larry Thornton. did their jobs very well and contrib- uted much to the success of the Cl1l'0lllClQ. Eve- ryone agrees that working together makes a task much easier, and these statfs proved this point. The printing of the Chronicle is one of the high points of the Senior Class. Each class looks forward to improving a11d changing it each year. All the students look forward each month to getting their copy fllltl finding out the latest happenings and gossip of the school. The day the Uhroniele comes out the teachers have a hard time getting the students to pay attention in class. The ti'ln'oniele statf would like to express its appreciation to the businessmen of Mellonald for their cooperation and patronage. llvithout their aid the t'ln'o11icle would not be possible. The statt would also like to wish luck and suc- cess to all the Chronicle staffs of the future. Miss .lgxxn OK. lqlkli Englislz . JUIlI'IlllI'i8Ill, Lil:-ra-rialu. Cooper- ation and the ambition of the elass members produeed a yearbook we eau be proud of. Every member of the elass had sonie part in helping turn out the lianrel. A elass meeting was held at the beginning' of the year, and the iueuibers ot' the ditlierent staffs were ehosen. lf'ernand Thoniassy and Harvey Brookins, eo-editors, along with their staff, worked hard in assembling into the yearbook the work of the other stalis. Many things have to be done in preparing a yearbook, but the inost important is getting enough money to have one. The advertising staff has done a tine job in bringing in money for ad- vertisements and urging their elassniates to bring in patrons. The business staff was responsible LAUREL THE PRODUCT OF WORK, WORRY, FUN for bringing in subseriptions to the Laurel, hold- ing a. 15-cent dunee and the annual dise-joekey danee. and eondueting the boxing glove game. Money was also made by selling magazines at the beginning of the sehool year. a projeet in whieh we did better than any previous elass. The literary staff was responsible for all the Writeups for the pietures that appear in the l.aurel. This proved to be a greater task than was expected. The eireulation statl' was responsible for distributing the Laurel to all subseribers. lVe eau all agree they did a, good job. The art staff did a very fine job under the expert guidanee of Mr. llaris. The drawings eontained in this year's book are very eleverly done. Many good pictures were taken this year for the yearbook by the photography statf. Those on the sports staff did a good job of keeping statistics of all the athletic activities. Miss Kirk has kept all the staffs at wo1'k. and we want to thank her for her fine assistance and guidance. YVe also wish to thank all of the patrons and advertisers, wit-hout whose finan- eial help our yearbook could not be possible. ATHLETIC COUNCIL PROMOTES ATHLETIC The Athletic t'ouncil is niade up of repre- sentatives of the school board. the faculty, and tl1c senior high school classes. .lohn Williamson, senior: .lon SUlllll0l'. junior, and ltichard Scott, SUlDlll:lll0l'C, are the senior high school class rep- rescntatives. The group is perhaps the least known or- ganization i11 our school, but certainly rates high i11 iniportaucc-at least as far as athletics are een-ccrucd. The group has tl1c task of organizing the complete sports lll'Ugl'il111 for the school. The council schedules games. advertises each game, provides tickets. buys equipment, sponsors sports banquets, and provides transportation for away QIHIIIOS. This year the council sponsored tlll all- sports banquet. It also bought new football tllltl new basketball cquipnient. An interesting fact about the council and Mellonald lligh is that the very best equipment is always purchased in order to secure the safety of our boys as well as to provide attractive looking squads. T-he student 1'eprescntatires for this organ- ization gain lnuch experience i11 planing and organizing. The boys must he boys who are ca- pable of good judgment. They are elected by the class at large and their job is to express the opinions of the athletes in their room. One of the IIOIIIIItl-Illl'-SCOIIO duties of the Athletic Uouncil is the buying of equipment. Long before our teau1s start practice, our coach- cs have turned i11to thc council, a requisition sheet of lnaterial a11d cquipnient. needed for the emning season. The council discusses and votes on the material which is then ordered and de- livered i11 time for the first practice. THE FOOTBALL DANCE Une of the outstanding' social events of the year was the Football llanee which was held at the t-lose of football season. The danee was spon- sored by the l.0it0l'lll0ll'S Vlub. The highlight of the dance was the crown- ing of the Football Queen. Gloria Mazzoeeo, who was ehosen by the l.Cl't0l'1Il0lliS Club. Gloria was eo-head eheerleader and was also aetive in nxanlv other elubs and aetivities. Gloria ehose Parole Miller, also eo-head eheerleader. as her maid of honor. The other attendants ineluded the rest. of the eheerleaders, the three Pep Vlub otlieers, and the three senior niajorettes. Gloria wore a white, iioor-length gown, and the attendants wo1'e ballerina-length gowns of pastel shades. lfaeh of the attendants earried a large nnun with red and white streamers. and the Queen earried a football made ont of small nnuns. The Queen and her attendants walked through an honor guard made up of ten junior high boys taken from the band. The boys were: David llletiueks, liobert Glass. llennis Uooper, Robert lqvneh, David Rehak, Samuel Hennon, Harry l 1'yblsliy, Uharles Myers, James Heron and Tvllllillll COl'lill1'll. v Gloria was then escorted to her throne by eo- eaptain John Williamson, and eo-captain Har- vey .lirookins plaeed the erown on her head. Peggy YValker, who was also dressed in white. was the erown bearer. and Lee Webber was dressed as the Red Devil who represents the spirit of Mellonald High School. The decorations eonsisted of red and white streanlers draped aeross the gfflll with stars in- dieating the football players hung among the streamers. The background, whieh added just the right toueh to the danee. was the picture of a football lield. The art students, under the di- rection of Mr. llavis, the L0i-l0l'lll0lliS Club, and the nxeinbers of the eourt were responsible for the e'H'eetive deeorations. s The dauee lnusie was furnished by Lou Nicola and his Tunetoppers. The line ll1llSl0, the eolorful setting, the impressive erowning eere- niony. and the whole danee made this annual event one that will long be reuleinbered by all those who attended. I Harvey ll.
