It means many long hours of hard work during and after school. It means deadlines that must be met for the school paper that goes out twice monthly. Besides the regular school paper the class puts out special holiday issues and the an- nual. This is a hard job but it is well worth it when everyone sees the finished product of the annual. Speech And Drama The speech class this year was bigger than it's been in a long time. The students of McCune considered the speech and drama department one of the finer points of the school. The class proved to be a very talented group of students, as their efforts showed in their performances at contests. Miss Naccarato, their instructor, was proud of their fine performances at Chanute the league meet, regionals and state contest. To end the school year the students and Miss Naccarato put on the all school play which gave all the students in school a chance to participate in the program and perform in front Of an audience. 22 FHA The 77-78 school year proved to be both an active and fun year for the 30 members in FHA. The election of officers started off the year. Officers were; Dot Shanholtzer President, Beth Jones Vice President, Laura Bennett Secretary, Kim Darland Treasurer, Regina Dixon Reporter, Janet Shouse His- torian, LeAnn Johnston Parlimentarian, Ronda Morgan Pianist, and Theresa Maffei Song Leader. Bess Anna Bennett and Carla Maffei were chosen Chapter Mothers. Mrs. Closs was the FHA sponsor. The years activities included the FFA- FHA float and youth fair at Homecoming, a bake sale for the Arthritis Foundation, and the Annual Box Supper. In March the FHA took a trip to Kansas City to shop at Crown Center and tour Hallmark Cards. At the end of the year the officers, Chapter Mothers, and Mrs. Closs went to Topeka to the State FHA Meeting. FFA The F.F.A. is the Future Farmers of America. The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is the development of agriculture leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. F.F.A. is based upon Leming to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve. The Future Farmers of America had many activities during the year. The F.F.A. officers toured the Lloyed Hellwig and the Geiers farms this summer. The officers were; President Jim Kluber, Vice President Tom Maffie, Sec- retary Bernard Otto, Treasurer Tony Mor- gan, Reporter Mark Gilpin, Sentinal Steve Nutt. To start the year off the F.F.A. members went to the Tulsa State fair for a day. The officers also went to the Ameri- can Royal to the National F.F.A. Conven- tion. Band And Chorus 24 And The Bund Played On 25 NHS The National Honor Society is an organiza- tion made up of students who have obtained a B+ or above grade average. The four aspects that students are judged on are Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Each year new members are chosen and then rated by the teachers in each of these catagories. NHS is a National Organization and each chapter is required to do a community service project. To close the school year each Senior member was honored at graduation by the presentation of scholastic collars. Stuco Stuco is the governing body of the high school. They had been active this year with activities and fund raising ideas. The year started off with the mixer and getting to know each other. Several lyceums took place of the movies. The Stuco attended a workshop at the beginning of the year to help the representa- tives understand more ways to help their schools. The end of the first semester the Stuco held a penny contest with the Juniors winning, letting them out of school for half a day of classes. $300 was raised during this event. At the end of the year the Stuco gives a $100 scholarship to a Senior. 26 AAIVAOH 7 FOOTBALL ENDA TS AND Theresa Mat'fei, Chmstina Ha, Steve islvti like Kim Parsons x Reed Gary Dixon Christy j 1977 FFA-FHA Attendants Dot Shanholtzer Linda Otto Kim Parsons Jeff Rose Mark Flood Tom Maffei 78 Annual Royalty -d Brenda Schulz Mike-i SPORTS Football Football is a sport that has its ups and downs and it seems that during the past season the McCune Eagles had their downs. They suffered from injury as well as from defeat, but with the new coach Gordon Flood they managed to keep their morale high. The high- light of the season was when they defeated Elk Valley 8-0 in overtime. Although this was their only victory they did come close to winning a few more. The Ea- gles ended the season with a 1-8 record. Basketball The 1977-78 basketball season was very prosperous for the McCune Eagles. Prosperous in not only their record, but also to gain the re - spect of every team they played and from the hometown crowd. The Eagles fooled a lot of people this year, once by beating Neodesha, a class 2A team. Then again by putting up close battles with everyone they played including the undefeated St. Paul power. McCune also kept the crowd on the edge of their seats with several close wins and losses. The main win was in the exciting game against Oswego, and a four point loss with Thayer made many teams worry about tough competition from McCune. The boys have done an excellent jo in handling and running with the ball. But one of the main benefactors to the victorious season was the Eagles worked hard and made it a team effort. Another reason was the sportsmanship shown by McCune. In many peoples eyes these two qualities are what makes a really winning team. - H Girls Basketball The 1977-78 basketball season proved to be one of the best ever for the Eaglettes. Under the directions of their coach, Steve Cooper, the Eaglettes ran a very effective zone defense and a successful offense. The Eaglettes began the season by capturing 1st place in the MBL Tournament. Later on, as the season came to a close the Eaglettes won the league with an outstanding league record of 9 -1. Every member of the team put in a lot of work and effort to make their team a success. Girls Volleyball The girls volleyball team had a terrific season this year. Although the girls never took home a first they did in a way because in their hearts they knew that they gave all they could by doing their very best. It took the girls awhile to learn how to work together, but with the help of Coach Ford, ' 'Pearl1', they became a team that played as one. Once they accomplished this they found that a team that worked together and didn't give up could defeat a tough competitor, especially their long rival, St. Paul. They proved this by defeat- ing them 2 matches. They started out the season by taking 2nd place at the McCune, Invitational. Next the girls won 2nd place in the league. Then they went on to win 2nd in their Regionals. Final- ly the girls went to Sub-State at Flinthills, Ks. With the great coaching from Pearl they took 2nd again. The girls finished the season with a record of 15-6. Also four girls took honors in the league. Three of them made the All M.B.L. and one made Honorable Mention. The girls showed their ability by bringing home victories but more im- portant by using their ability to work together as one. Everyone should be proud of these girls by making the school of McCune get noticed and re- spected by the schools they met. Congratulations girls for the hard work and effort you gave and for making the girls sports in McCune recognized. sit McCune Track The McCune Track team did a fine job representing their school this year. The boy's team was coached by Mr. Thomas. He provided alot of encouragement to the team. Miss Ford coached the girls team. The girls team only had three girls on it that lettered last year. They were Beth Jones, Laura Neblett, and Jolene Mosler. Cheerleaders Pom Port Pep Club Every year several girls are chosen to repre - sent their student body as cheerleaders and pom pon girls. Together the cheerleaders and pom pon girls attended a spirit clinic during the first of the year. The cheerleaders at- tended a cheerleading camp at Laurence last summer and also sponsored pep rallies and car rallies to help the spirit of tire school rise high. The pom pon squad, in its fourth year consisted of six girls who gave half time per- formances during the football and basketball season. The pep club also did a fine job re- presenting their school this year. Dixon Once in every life time there comes a very special person who touches the lives of those he meets. A person whose very presence leaves an indelible mark, Gary was such a person. On Friday March 17, 1978 we lost not only a fellow student but a very spe- cial friend. Gary's smiling face will never be forgotten by those of us who loved him. We will all miss Gary and yet we can all be thankful that our lives were touched by his very presence. Autographs Autographs Autographs Autographs i Autographs Autographs Autographs A u togra phs
