LARRY THOMAS He is like a tree planted by the waters, whatever he doeth shall prosper. Our Gang It was the best of times when Leona Nutt, Vir- ginia Coonrod and Neva Johnston prepared us hot nutritious meals that were served daily with a smile. Jack York, Melvin Harris and Dean G Shir- ley Ulery also made the 1975-76 school year the best of times. These were the people that brought our kids not only to school daily but also field trips, speech contests, conventions, and many other places. Harry TridelandHerschel Brown did their part well in making this year the best year. Harry is our custodian for the High School, he is very helpful when you need a strong hand. Herschel works in the grade school and is also helpful when it comes to keeping our floors and trophy cases spotless. These are the nine reasons why our school is run so efficiently. 18 ROYALTY MM FFA FHA Attendents ion Bicknell sJLaura gnnett Debbie Vandorn Beth j|JksJpTony Morgan 23 Homecoming Escorts And Attendants Barry Varner Steve Brunenn Sheldon Bicknell Kathy Hey Lori Long Ginger Bunn I r FFA FFA Has Busy Year To start the year for the McCune FFA, Mr. Johnston, ad viso r and Mr. Ewbank, principal accompanied the officers on a one day tour of some of the most outstanding swine, beef, and dairy operations in Southeastern Kansas and a stop was made at the McCoy green house at Cherryvale. Officers for this year are Doug Johnston, president; Steve Brunenn, Vice president; Er- nest Amershek, secretary; David Buzard, trea- surer; Mark Bennett, reporter; and Russell Var- ner, sentinel. Thirty five members, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Ewbank, and Mr. Watson, superintendent, spent one day at the Tulsa State Fair. Everyone had a very enjoyable and an educational day. The FFA built a small log cabin to place on our float this year for the fall festival and with the cooperation of the FHA produced the win- ning float. Four members of the freshman class attend- ed the Green hand conference at Erie. Four members including two officers, went to Inde- pendence to hear Lome Green speak on organic fertilizers. Other activities this year were the box sup- per, mechanics contest at McCune, pest con- test, magazine sales, horticulture and entomo- logy contest, another mechanics contest at Southeast,' speaking contest, livestock judging contest, our National Convention at Kansas City, local banquet, state contests and the district banquet. FHA The 30 members in FHA have had a very active year. They began by electing new of- ficers and chapter mothers. Cindy Shanholtzer was chosen President, Vice President, Lori' Long, Secretary, Karen Otto, Treasurer, Deb- bie Nutt, Reporter, Kathy Hey, Historian, Carol Hiller, Parlimentarian, Diane Johnston, Pianist, Laura Bennett, and Song Leader, Dot Shanholtzer. The C h a p t e r Mothers are: Beth Otto and Katherin Shanholtzer. Mrs. Closs sponsored the FHA this year. The FHA-FFA Homecoming float and youth fair started off the year's activities. They spon- sored a bake sale for the Arthritis Foundation, and helped the FFA with the annual Box Supper held in November. Christmas Caroling and He art-Sister Week were a lot of fun for the FHA members, with everyone involved. The annual Speghetti Supper was held in March. Each member helped in some way to make the supper a success. The year ended for the chapter when the officers, accompanied by their chapter mothers and Mrs. Closs attended the State FHA meeting in Topeka. 30 StuCo ' k •• 4 NHS 32 Chorus And Band This years band and chorus experienced many hours of practice, hard work, practice, concerts, football games and a new director to make this year a success. During Mrs. Saliba's leave of ab- sence Linda Culliver took the jobs of director and did one fantastic job. This years band and chorus highlight was the Christmas program. Congratu- lations for a job well done. 33 The Speech and Drama department in McCune High School gives theatri- cally inclined students the opportunities to become members of a play cast. This year, the Drama students, along with the members of the journalism class put on 3-one act plays in November. Each member in the casts helped in collecting costumes and stage props, and everyone helped to paint and assemble the stage flats. The Speech class took one of these plays to the local contests that were held in early February. The Speech and Drama studentspreparedreadings, interps, poe- try, and duet-acts for the local contests f There is much hard work in developing a cutting from a book, memorizing it, and giving the speech in front of an audi- ience. The students' efforts are some- times rewarded by receiving a 1 rating at a local contest, therefore enabling them to go on to the State Speech con- test in the spring. The Speech and Drama department has had a very successful year, and is under the direction of Judy Naccarabo. Drama 34 Cheerleaders Pep Club Pom Pon Enthusiasm and pep generated by the cheerleaders this year helped to putspirit into the Football and Basketball games. The cheerleaders attended a spirit clinic this year and also sponsored pep rallys, a bon-fire, and snake dances. Members of the pep club were major spirit boosters in the student body this year. Posters in the hall before each game were reminders of the work done by the pep club, as there were pep ral- lies, snake dances, and car rallies. The Pom Pon squad, in it's second year consisted of eight girls who gave halftime performances at seven ball games. mm 36 It Was The Best Of Times When McCune took to the field this season they had an extra incentive going with them. They knew that if they won the MBL title they would go to the state play- offs. McCune started the season off against a strong 2A team, Moran. Although they did lose that game 20-0 they showed determination that lasted all through the season. From that point they went on to win the next game against Oswego 13-0. This set the pattern that was to be followed throughout the season. The Eagles won all of their league games with ease. The most ex- citing game was played against Chetopa. McCune endedthe regularseason with a 5-4 record, a league title and a chance to play for a berth in the state play-offs. 40 Basketball The 1975-76 basketball season was very disappointing for the Eagles. They did not win a game, though four times they came within 1 point. Several games were lost by six or less points. A few more points in the right places could have changed their rec- ord completely. Yet records do not show everything, as the Mc- Cune team has shown time and again. Even after the most dis- couraging losses possible the Eagles returned displaying a will to win. They gave it everything they had when others might have given up. The sportsmanship that they displayed has been outstanding, few teams could surpass it. The Eagles gave their best, and if in years to come this example is followed, victory will be theirs for the taking. 41 Volleyball The 1975 volleyball season was a most rewarding one for Coach Ford and the girls. The long hard hours of practice and the continual drilling of bump, set, spike finally paid off. It was by far the best team McCune has ever produced and at the end of the season the 'Bananas' had an overall record of 12-3. Kathy Hey was overall high scorer for the season with Torri McColm running a close second. Wanda Ulery and Renda Satzler were the strong spikers for the team. McCune held its first invitational tournament and took second, beating teams from Cedar Vale, Elk Valley, Oswego, Chetopa, and Thayer. McCune also took second in the regional tournament at St. Paul. The team played real power ball and as Miss Ford put it, We're the best. The team is looking forward to an even better season next year, as all six starters will be returning and only one player was lost by graduation. 44 Basketball The girls basketball team was proud of their season this year. This was the first year girls sports have been organized enough to play in league competition. This was also the first year that the girls basketball team has had any equality at all with the boy's team. The girls had some tough games and lost by quite a bit, but they also had some nice wins. No one can say the girls did not have some exciting games. One of the most exciting games was the league playoffs. The Eaglettes played St. Paul for 1st place. It was a close game and the Eaglettes only lost by a small margin of 3 points. The girls were still proud to give the school it's first trophe in girl's b as ke tb a 11. The loses the girls suffered can be attributed mainly to inexpierence. Half of the 9 girls who went out were Freshmans. Next year all except one of the girls will be returning to the squad. Expierence should even up the chances for next year. The girls success is due to good support and coaching they recieved from their coach and manager. The girls wouldn't know what to do if Laura Bennett (the manager) didn't always have a plentiful supply of bubble gum. The girls couldn't have a more dedicated coach than Miss Ford who always stood behind them with gripes, suggestions, and praise. Yes, the girls have had an exciting season and one to be proud of. Track The McCune track teams, under the supervision of Larry Thomas and Linda Ford, had a successful track season. Both teams exerted lots of hard work and ef- fort in making this a winning season. Coaches Ford and Thomas were very fortunate this year in having several re- turn ing letterman to strengthen the teams. Each team did an outstanding job in representing the school this past year. 46 SCHOOL LIFE It Was T Best Of Times. Mums the word. I've heard of lipstick.
