Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1975 volume:

I ♦ A TIME TO REMEMBER Turn the pages, one by one — all the pictures, happy faces: The classroom scenes, the halls and gym, and shots of other places — Ball game parties, after school, the old pond where we played — The teachers and the other staff whose impact will not fade. Oh, look! the stage — the one on which we acted out our dreams, And here is one of the Senior prom and crepe paper by the reams Hung everywhere like the whisps of webs that bind us to our past: The happy days of school and youth that slip away so fast. Somewhere out beyond these walls in the classrooms of our lives We’ll all look back to these warm years to guide us through the strife. And turning page by page, this book will stir our memories Of all we learned and dreamed about when we were young and free. What makes a memory ? Is it people or just places? Do we see it in the candid shot or rows of smiling faces ? Shining back across the years to warm some future cold December A touch of glory, warm and bright — these golden moments to remember. As the class of '75' graduates, there are more than a dozen students who Helen has seen grow up since first grade. She has outlasted 5 principals, and is probably the one factor that keeps McCune High School going. Because of her vitality, hard work, and sincere devotion, we dedicate this annual to you, Helen Smith. 2 Hers is the face we will always remember. Although she has gone away. She touched our hearts with her smile and her laugh. We will cherish the one brief moment of our encounter and know it was A time to remember. A Time To Remember Suzie Suzanne Bolzman came to Me Cune on September 11 from Lima, Peru. Suzie stayed in the states for six months as an exchange student. While visiting McCune she stayed at the home of Conard Otto. Although Mc- Cune was quite a change from the big city life style Suzie was used to it proved to be a most enjoyable adventure. 4 CONNIE GILPIN KATHY HARTMAN TERRY JOHNSON MERLIN HILLER KAREN Me GOWN ROBERT MANSUR 7 8 FRANK RITCHAL ROSS POTEAT GARY SHANHOLTZER RITA SATZLER CONNIE WEST DAVID VAN DORN 9 Class Officers Terri Dixon Carol Parker CAROL ANN STEPHENS Joyce Buzard Betty Zimmerman (1974 graduate) Seniors 1975 Looking back on twelve very long years of learning, the class of '75 finds itself suddenly thrust out into the world. In between arguments with teachers, dissatisfaction with school functions, and more arguments with teachers, we will find it hard to forget these years, probably the finest of our life. What can we do but thank our parents and our teachers, who so aptly prepared us for adulthood. And it is with excitement, wonder, and maybe even a little be- wilderment, that we make an attempt to, in whatever small way, contribute to the future of our community and country. 10 NOREEN STEPHEN JOYCE TERRI DAVID PEGGY RANDY CONNIE KATHY MERLIN TERRY KAREN ROBERT GREG RICK ANN CAROL DENNIS BUEL ROSS FRANK RITA GARY CONNIE ROBERT BETTY Class off. 1; FHA 1,2; NHS 3,4; Vo 1 ley b a 11 2-4; BB 2-4; Band 1,2,3; Pep Club 1-4; School Play 2; Annual Queen 2; Stage Band 4; Powder Puff Football 3,4; Track 1. A Time To Remember .. . Our Crew Harry Tridel, Herschel Brown, Neva Johnston, Leona Nutt, Jack York, Melvin Harris and Dean G Shriley Ulery. These people are the backbone of the school. They are the ones whose day begins at 6:00 A. M. and whose day doesn’t end until the last school child is accounted for, the last dish is washed or the last light turned off. Harry and Herschel are the fix it men, Leona, Viiginia, and Neva cook the many fine meals the students and faculty of McCune have eaten, and Jack, Dean, Shriley and Melvin pick-up and deliver the students. We are proud of these fine people and thank them for the outstanding jobs they have performed. 18 Homecoming Attendants And Escorts Steve Brunenn Cindy Shanholtzer Ginger Bunn Debbie Fox Dale Coonrod Joe Autem ball Queen And Escort ixon 0 Gregg Nutt nts And Esco Kathy Hey 28 A Time To Remember Publications A time to remember writing, rewriting, layouts, deadlines, writing, typing, selling ads, taking pic- tures, writing, mimeographing, letters to the edi- tor, mass production, stapling, counting, criticisms, and the satisfaction of knowing we've done our best. Many long, hard, and strenuous hours are put into the production of the two works. In order to better themselves, this year's publications c 1 ass attended several workshops and toured several factories to learn the proper proc e dure of publications. This year's staff was made up of twelve hard working and dedicated young men and women. Under the super- vision of Miss Judy Naccarato these twelve: Connie Gilpin, Ann Otto, Carol Parker, Susy Bolzman, Kar- en Otto, Lori Long, Betty Zimmerman, Teddi Gor- man, Ross Poteat, Joe Autem, Doug Johnston, and Robert Mansur invite you to share the memories of the 1974-75 school year with this annual. 29 A Time To Remember FFA FHA FFA and FHA sponsored a float in the homecoming parade , which received 1st place. A Box Supper was held Nov. 26, and the proceeds went to the two chapters. The two groups were very active this year. The FFA traveled to a variety of agricultural contests, and the officers went to the FFA convention in K.C. The FHA girls were busy sponsoring cake sales and a spaghetti supper. To end the FHA year the girls went to Topeka. FFA: I. Johnston, Sponsor, D. Buzard, D. Parsons, G. Shanholtzer, D. Johnston, F. Ritchal, R. Froebe. FHA: A. Closs, Sponsor, A. Otto, M. Dixon, L. The MBLconcert completed a very rewarding year for the band. 3 32 A Time To Remember Coach Jacquinet — Basketball Coaches Coach Cooper — Football Coach Ford — Girls Sports Coach Thomas — Track 34 A Time To Remember MBL Champs The 1974 McCune High School Eagles football sea- son was one of the most successful in recent years. Under the guidance of head coach Steve Cooper the Eagles posted a 5-4 season record. For the first time in a dec ade McCune had consecutive winning sea- sons after an identical record the year before. It was also the first time McCune has won the MBL cham- pionship since joining the league, posting a 5-0 rec- ord in league play. McCune had victories over Oswego, St. Paul, Elk Valley, Thayer, and Chetopa. Coach Cooper was selected coach of the week by the Pittsburg Sun for the Eagles' victory over Chetopa, a game that pitted the two undefeated teams in league play against each other and decided the MBL champion. Charles Hazen was the player of the week for a field goal he kicked against Chetopa. Russell Vaner and Joe Au- tem were given special mention in their contributions in victories over Thayer and St. Paul. The Eagles didn't win a nonleague game, playing such power- houses as Moran, a class 2a school and three Okla- homa schools, Quapaw, Fairland, and Copan, two of whom went to the Oklahoma state playoffs. The Eagles, although they dominated league play, landed only seven players on the all league team. Those chosen were Barry Varner, linebacker; Joe Autem, quarterback; Ernest Amershek, def. tackle; Mike Riggs, def. noseguard; Russell Varner, line- backer; Steve Prunenn, def. halfback; Charles Haz- en, Off. end; and Buel Pool, def. end. The Eagles had a young squad this year, losing only four seniors by graduation and returning nine starters on both offense and defense. A Time To Remember Basketball Although this has been a disappointing season for the McCune Eagles, it can't be said that it has been a bor- ing season. With seven overtimes in four different games highlighted by a thrilling triple overtime vic- tory over Uniontown and an overtime victory over Mound City, the Eagles provided much excitement for their hometown fans. Seven out of ten of McCune's los- ses have been by margins of five points of less. Mc- Cune provided good competition for almost everyone they have played. 40 Volleyball 41 A Time To Remember Girls Basketball 42 A Time To Remember Girls Track ■ 43 A Time To Remember Cheerleaders Pep Club It was the duty of this organization to bring pep, spirit and soul to the Football and Bas- ketball team.
