L The following information was taken from SOUVENIR OF MCCUNE, KANS. published by the I!1!icCLI1gIg3IiIERALD in 1913 and from the HISTORY OF KANSAS, CRAWFORD COUNTY Qpublication ate . McCune is located in the southwest portion of Crawford County on the dividing line between Light- ning Creek and the Neosho River and is surrounded by an excellent farming country as well as the well kept fields and good appearing live stock. from the SOUVENIR. The land on which most of the town is built was entered by Leroy Akers in 1869 and the farm was soon sold to Issac McCune who was engaged in farming. He farmed the land prior to its becoming a town site. In May of 1879 McCune laid out the town and named it after himself. The original site con- tained 60 acres. Within a few years R. N. Canada added 10 acres on the Northg C. Crank, 10 acres on the west, and McCune an additional 10 acres on the south. The town site now totaled 90 acres. The town was surveyed following the construction of what is now the Cherryvale Branch of the Frisco railroad f1913j. The railroad was built by a group of Cherokee and Parsons men, most of the money was furnished by the late Col. Mathewson of Parsons. When the road was built it was a narrow guage, but in a few years it was changed to a standard guage. The first building was built by J. Z. Sherific and was later used as a hotel. I. V. McCune built the first store building in August after the town was plotted in May. The building was of native walnut and was built on Front Street Qin 1913 the I-lerald Office was near the site of this buildingj. I. D. Rogers occupied the building. Early in 1880 a storehouse was built by Thomas Stuttered and it sold drugs and dry goods. Two months later Dr. E. P. Davis bought the store. In the spring of the same year W. W. Gibson opened a general store and in the fall F. M. McCaslin put up a house which he stocked with general merchandise. Wilson and Son occupied the building in 1913. The next building was a grocery store owned by David- son and Granthum. Miss Mary Ball taught the first school in the district in 1869. The first school in McCune was taught by Daniel Hollinger and was a small frame building. An addition was added in 1881. A petition to the District Court of the 11th judicial District, signed by Issac McCune, E. L. Ball, and 63 others, incorporated the town of McCune as a 3rd class city on October 8, 1881. Issac McCune was elected the first mayor and was succeeded by J. L. Ward, who was elected in April of 1882. I. V. McCune, R. O. Harris, M. Casey and K. P. Minard served as the first city council. Within four years time the city had a population of 500 and contained 8 general stores, 3 hardware stores, 2 drug stores, 2 grocery stores, 2 millinery shops, 2 hotels, 1 billard hall, 2 blacksmith shops, 1 cabinet shop, 3 carpenter shops, 2 lumber yards, 2 coal yards, 2 livery stables, 1 flour mill, 1 grain elevator and 9 grain buyers. D. A. Buxton started the first newspaper, the MCCUNE STANDARD, in July of 1881. His son, 1. A., took over the following fall and then he sold the paper to W. W. Liggett who changed the name to MCCUNE TIMES. A post office called Time was established in the vicinity in 1875 and was kept by W. Welch. The post office was about 1X2 mile east of the town. In 1878 the post office site was moved to McCune and J. F. McCune became postmaster. At that time the post office consisted of a small box containing 15 pigeon holes and was carried around under Mr. McCune's arm. By 1879 the Presbyterian Church had a membership of seven. Rev. Hill of Kansas City held services at the school house and Rev. Thayer was the first regular pastor. The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1882, followed by the organization of the Christian Church. The Presbyterians, and Bap- tists did not have a house of worship.
