There are 14 new members in the chapter. Since our chapter carried out the state and national programs of work and met all other requirements, an Honor Chapter Award was presented to us from the State Advisor, Miss Helen Scheve. The President of our chapter, Mary Ruth Wilson, accepted this award at the district meeting in Pittsburg, October 18th. Attending the district meeting from McCune were 30 members, our chapter Mothers, Mrs. Ora Wilson and Mrs. Harold Wright, and our chapter advisor, Mrs. Almeda Closs. Everyone at the district meeting enjoyed two Hawaiian Guitar numbers presented by Connie Wright. The attendance at the state meeting at Topeka March 14 will be limited in all chapters for the first time this year. Eleven members and two adults may attend from McCune. Those attending will be chapter officers, state degree candidates, and another member to be chosen. Karolyn Bell, Mary Ann Gemmell, and Della Ruth Spillman have completed State Homemaker Degrees this year. The state degree is the highest F. H.A. degree and is evaluated and awarded by the State advisor to those who meet the standards. In addition to the State and National projects carried out by our chapter last year we have added U.N.E. S.C.O. as a project this year. The Betty Crocker Homemaker pin was presented to Luanne Shipman for making the highest test score on a test given to graduating Seniors. The F. H. The enrollment includes 11 freshmen, 11 sophomores, 9 juniors, and 5 seniors. The officers elected for this year include president, Bill Barnes; vice president, David Leonard; secretary, Harvey Davidson; treasurer, Lynn Strathe; reporter, Johnnie Maffei; and sentinel, Jerry McGown. The junior and senior F. F.A. boys took five projects to the Hutchinson fair for a group exhibit placing 4th among 15 schools. The McCune Chapter was awarded $70 in prize money and $87 for mileage for their exhibit at the state fair. The youth fair was the largest ever this year with some 75 crop entries, 25 livestock entries and 27 farm mechanics entries. The bus garage was used for the crop entries. The officers attended the leadership school at Fredonia early in October. The senior and sophomore F. F. A. boys went to Kansas City to attend the national F. F. A. convention for one evening and one day. As a community service project this year the boys have constructed a new step at the southwest entrance to the school building, taken down the swings from south of the shop, butchered 6 beef cattle and have constructed 2 new practice goals for the new gymnasium and built some feeders in shop for farmers in the community. Again this year the F.F.A. cooperated with the F.H.A. in sponsoring a box supper in November. The speaking team, consisting of Harvey Davidson, Jim Monroe, John Gobetz, Kenneth Davidson, Roy Parsons and Calvin Flaharty placed fifth at the district F. F. A. public speaking contest held at Iola in January. John Gobetz placed first in the sophomore division with 26 boys competing. Roy Parsons placed sixth in the freshman division with 27 boys competing. This year the boys sold $110 in subscriptions for the Farm Journal making for them $55 in free merchan- dise from the official future farmer supply catalogue. Also as an extra money making project the boys made $21 selling fire extinguishers and $42 selling rat poison. Bob Niebaum was the winner of the annual rodent contest with Kenneth Davidson second and Tommy Haigh third. In the first farm mechanics contest held at Neodesha the McCune team placed seventh among the 14 schools competing in the contest. Boys on the McCune team were Richard Morgan, Jim Monroe, Harvey Davidson, David Leonard, Bill Barnes, and Johnnie Maffei. Other contests this year will include crops, poultry, farm mechanics, livestock judging, dairy judging, and an added contest in entomology. Dr. McKee has helped several of the F.F.A. boys to purchase gilts this year for livestock projects. In shop several feeders have been constructed and other projects include a loading chute, hog troughs, 4 wheel trailer, and a power lawn mower. In the season opener against St. Mary's (Pittsburg) the Eagles were plagued by fumbles and dropped the non-league game 27-14. To open league play the Eagles traveled to Girard where they started the highly rated Trojans to their downfall by beating them 13-7. The feature of the game, being the booming punts of fullback Sumpter, and defensive play of linebacks, Frazier and Morgan. The following week the Eagles entertained arch rival, Cherokee, for their homecoming and Fall Festival game. The Eagles, aided by a blocked Cherokee punt by end, Larry Brown, started fast to roll over the Braves 28-7. The next game found the Eagles involved in a thriller. Tailback Rentfro, passed to Dale Moore for the winning touchdown, with seven seconds remaining to hand the Raiders their only defeat of the season 20-13. The touchdown was set up by a last minute pass interception by wingback, Jerry McGown, who returned it to the seven yard line. The game again featured the hard running of fullback Sumpter and tailback Jimmy Wilson. In the final non-league game the Eagles blasted Oswego 34-13 with every man seeing action. Returning to league play, the Eagles played one of their finest games of the season, by running rough shod over Riverton 33-7. Fullback Sumpter, accounted for three touchdowns and gained over 200 yards, rushing. In the final two games, the Eagles were slowed down considerably by injuries. They traveled to Erie, where Erie scored in the final minute of the game, to win the hard fought battle 14-12. To close the season. Eagles battled the Arma Bulldogs to a 0-0 tie. The Eagles dominated the All-League team, which was chosen by the coaches at the close of the season. Selected on the All-League team, were: L. Brown, end; J. Frazier, tackle; R. Ironside, center; R. Morgan, guard; N. Sumpter, fullback. Receiving honorable mention were; H. Davidson, end; D. Moore, halfback; R. Parsons, tackle; and J. Wilson, tailback. The lettermen for the 1958 season are; J. They are seniors: Jim Frazier and Larry Brown, and Junior: Bob Rentfro. The season opened with Eagles playing the first game in their new gymnasium. They defeated St. Mary’s (Pittsburg) by the score of 42-33. The opening of league play found the Eagles playing the two new members of the Cee Cee League, Riverton and Erie. The Eagles split by losing to Riverton 58-46 and beating Erie 41-36. The Eagles then traveled to Pittsburg for a return game with St. Mary’s and again downed the Panthers, this time by the score of 50-38. In the next two games the Eagles again split by beating College Hi (Pittsburg) 59-54 and losing to Girard 59-46. In the first games of the year the Eagles downed the Cherokee Braves 46-39. The next games saw the Eagles slumping by losing to Arma 47-43, Frontenac 55-50 and Riverton 48-42. The next action for the Eagles was in the league tournament in Frontenac where they were defeated by Girard. Jim Frazier, senior guard, was selected to the A11-Tournament team. Following the tournament the Eagles gained revenge by beating Cherokee 48-47 and losing to Arma and to Frontenac. The Eagles opened district tourney play by trouncing St. Patricks (Parsons) 60-42. Though we were full of enthusiasm we were quite confused, but with the help of the faculty, and our upper classmen we felt as if we could climb the steps to graduation. Our Freshmen class was made up of the following: Jo Ellen Baker, Bill Barnes, Karolyn Bell, Linda Blackburn, Jaunita Brintnall, Larry Brown, Harvey Davidson, Frankie Dunnick, Jim Frazier, Darlene Gardenhire, Mary Ann Gemmell, Richard Morgan, Steve Mosler, Mary Ann Rauniker, Nancy Sears, Luanne Shipman, Sondra Spangler, Norman Sumpter, Jean Thornberry, and Jim Thornberry. We were glad to gain Mabel Ard the second semester of our Freshman year. We chose as our class officers; President, Luanne Shipman; Vice President, Jim Frazier; Secretary-Treasurer, Mary Ann Gemmell; Queen Candidate, Linda Blackburn. Mr. Comer was our sponsor. In our Sophomore year we were sorry to be without Luanne Shipman and Mabel Ard, but were happy to have Zora Ann Getman join our class. We were glad to have Marilyn Sartin and Galen Emmons join us. Although we lost two more of our students during the year, Nancy Sears and Sondra Spangler, we were all looking forward to moving on into the future as Seniors. Our Junior-Senior Banquet with the theme, Stair- way to the Stars, was an evening of real enjoyment. Now we find ourselves SENIORS looking joyfully ahead to the day we receive our diplomas. There are six of us who have been together for 12 years in the McCune School. All nineteen of us will always have happy memories of MRHS. At the beginning of our Senior year we were happy to regain Luanne Shipman also at the beginning of our second semester Sondra Spangler, but sorry to lose Jaunita Brintnall. We are attending the Hemospheric Fair, being held in the newest city known to man, Glo-port. Frankie Dunnick and his dance band are playing at the Atlasphonic Hotel. Frankie made arrangements for us to come to this great celebration. We have received the choice rooms in the hotel and the best seats for the performance. Rocket Ship number I is arriving in the spaceport. Karolyn Bell and her five husky boys are stepping out of it. Karolyn says her boys have taken after their father in basketball skills, so she brought them along to meet with Jim Frazier's Rocketeers. So far, the Rocketeers are the Moon Champs. Another sports feature is Johnny Maffei, the champion wrestler, from Pluto vs. Moon Man Mulligan. In the same Rocket Ship is Zora Ann Getman, the world famous stenographer. She is going to record the entire celebration in shorthand. There is Bill Barnes, the livestock specialist. He says he has been working with the cross-breeding of earth animals with the ones on the moon. His latest discovery is the cross between an American Cow and a Moon Struck Zebra. Also, working in the field of agriculture are Harvey Davidson and David Leonard. They have been trying to raise wheat on Venus. The only things that will grow there successfully is castor beans. Now Rocket Ship number II is coming in. Stepping out in beautiful dresses of blue gossamer lace over synthetic illusion are none other than Marilyn Sartin, Jaunita Brintnall, and Luanne Shipman. They have agreed to sing at the Atlasphonic Hotel during this great Hemospheric Fair. Also I see Larry Brown, now know as The Bopping Beeper. He has a new hydrodielectric Guitar with a super-sonic sound box, which we will hear him play for the first time. Rocket Ship number in—No! This is Galen Emmons arriving in his own personal Space Ship. He placed his launching station in McCune, Kansas, but the people complained of the noise so he moved it to Texas. Mary Ann Gemmell is now an elementary school teacher on Mars, and has taken the time from her busy schedule to come to the Fair. In answer to the question How do you like teaching Mars children? she replied. “Give me America or give me death! Oh! Rocket Ship number IV is here. Number III must not be coming. On this Ship we find Sondra Spangler and Mary Ann Rauniker. They are famous dress designers on Earth. Mary Ann is now styling a creation called the Sag. Sondra is dealing mainly with the accessories to match it. Norman Sumpter! Is it really? Why, he is the most famous film star on Pluto! His latest movie was in Morgan-Scope, a new type of filming discovered by Richard Morgan. Finally! Rocket Ship number III has arrived. Darlene Gardenhire is saying something about stopping for a pepsi on Mercury. Incidentally, Darlene is doing missionary work on some of the newer planets. What? A message? Now coming through on the Racojet Atomic Space Boat is word from Richard Ironside, President of Mars, which I will read. Dear classmates of the '59 Class: I am very sorry that I cannot be with you at this reunion, but Mars's trouble with Earth about our Satellites getting out of control has made it impossible for me to attend.
