McCune and UNION GAS COMPANY, McCune. AMERICA The McCune Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America has been active with Sandra Samp as their president this year. At the District F. H. A. meeting in Pittsburg, a certificate of honorable men- tion for our club's achievements was presented by Miss Hazel Thompson, State F. H. A. Advisor. Members from the chapter also attended the District Planning Conference at Chanute, and the Dis- trict Election at Altamont. Our chapter mothers, Mrs. Bernice Groff and Mrs. Oletha Brintnall accom- panied the group. McCune will be well represented at the State F. H. A. meeting in Topeka. Marietta McGown will be installed as District Treasurer for the coming year at this meeting. Kathleen Montee, Zora Ann Getman, and Jessie Moore will sing in the All Chapter Chorus. State Homemaker Degrees will be a- warded to the candidates from McCune who have met the standards. Joyce Sartin, Jessie Moore, and Leona Long have completed work on their State Degrees this year. The program of work was based on the State and National Programs. Members contributed to the Coston Home near Girard and sent clothing to Hungary. We had programs on safety, family relations, grooming, and foods. Social activities included a Halloween party, Christmas party, and Mother- Daughter Banquet. The F. H. A. float received second place in the Fall Festival parade. The chapter will send delegates to the F. H. A. Leadership Training Camp at Goddard, Kansas, May 26-29. Many worthwhile home projects were completed by girls who are working on their Junior, Chapter, and State Degrees. These included projects in the fields of foods, clothing, health, home management, child care, and home improvement. Sponsored by: KANSAS GAS ELECTRIC COMPANY - Pittsburg. % CHAPTER | U mli i'A MR. Before school was out last spring the following officers we elected for this school year: Alan Hobson, President; Darrald Rose, Vice President; Vernon Egbert, Secretary; Billy Trotnic, Treasurer; Paul Johnson, Reporter, and Johnnie Maffei, Sentinel. Early last September we planned our program of work for the year. Some of the things included in the program were: Each member complete a good farming program; have class farming program tours; conduct youth fair; enter public speaking contest; enter two farm me- chanics contests and also the livestock and dairy judging contests. In planning our program of work we plan only things that we actually expect to do. This year we added a tractor driving contest which was held in connection with the youth fair. The events were backing a two wheel and a four wheel trailer, and spotting a drawbar. We feel that this is a very educational event. The officers attended leadership school at Fredonia in October. The McCune chapter officers ranked eighth among the 20 schools present in the opening ceremony contest. After this contest the officers were divided into groups for training on how to be good FFA officers. The Junior vocational agriculture class went to Hutchinson in the school truck to attend two days of the State Fair. They got to see livestock exhibits, crops, etc. Also they had time to spend on the fair grounds and were given a free pass to the grandstand performance. The officers went to the National FFA Convention held in Kansas City for one day. They attended the National FFA meeting and got to attend a concert put on by the National FFA Band and the National FFA Chorus. The FFA and FHA held a joint box supper in November. Each organization made a net profit of $123.00. A program was given by the FFA and FHA with some outside talent. The day after Thanksgiving the boys held a coon hunt with the cooperation of local coon hunters. Four raccoons were caught and after the hunt a weiner roast was held at Mr. Heryford’s farm. The FFA boys built a pen east of the football field for a sow and litter project. The pen is about one acre in size and enclosed the pond in the school pasture. A registered Hampshire gilt has been purchased and the Freshman boys have taken charge of feeding and caring for her. For a hog house the FFA chap- ter purchased an old hog house for $5. 00 and remodeled it. Plans are to start a Hampshire gilt ring. At the present time a Duroc gilt ring is functioning. The District FFA Public Speaking Contest was held at Iola on Saturday, January 26. Jim Monroe,. Freshman speaker placed second in his division with 23 boys competing. Harvey Davidson, Sophomore speaker, placed ninth in division with 23 boys competing. Other speakers from McCune were: David Leonard, Sophomore; Robert Rentfro, Freshman; David Long, Junior; and Billy Trotnic, Junior, spoke in the Senior division. As a team the McCune boys ranked in the Silver Division. In the rodent contest this year the following pests were destroyed: 4341 sparrows, 2179 rabbits, 1697 mice, 1276 rats, 512 starlings, 111 oppossums, 9 bluejays, 21 raccoons, 130 pigeons and 19 crows. The yellow side destroyed the most rodents and the boys on the white side served refreshments to everyone at the Greenhand Initiation. Pittsburg To open the 1956 grid season the Eagles were faced with the problem of playing one of the toughest schedules in the area and with only eight returning squad-men from the 1955 squad. The Eagles dropped their opening game to a strong Pittsburg St. Mary's team. The following week the McCune eleven rolled over Weir 14-0. In their first two league games the Eagles dropped a hard fought game to Cherokee and then pulled a mild surprise by holding a big Frontenac team to a 6-6 tie. Continuing league play the Eagles again split their next two games losing to Arma, the Cee Cee league champ, and whipping Arcadia 14-7. In the final game of the season the Eagles were defeated by Girard. In the All-Star balloting at the close of the season, Jim Frazier and Ronald Holden were chosen on the All Cee Cee league team with Chauncey Shepard and Lorn Lahey receiving honorable mention. During the season the young squad gained some very valuable experience and will be looking for- ward to the 57 season when they will have fourteen returning lettermen plus thirteen younger squad-men from this year's team. The lettermen for the 1956 season are: C. Allen, A. Baldwin, L. Brown, H. Davidson, J. Frazier, A. Hobson, R. Holden, R. Ironsides, P. Johnson, L. Lahey, F. Metcalf, R. Morgan, D. Rose, C. Shep- ard, E. Seibert, N. Sumpter, B. Trotnic, S. Mosler. Sponsored by: ROESE'S DRUG STORE, McCune 46 KIRKLAND INSURANCE AGENCY, McCune. Lahey, Baldwin, Frazier, Hobson, Allen, Spangler, Holden, Brown, Johnson, Shepard. The 1956-57 Eagles began the season with only two returning lettermen, Senior Alan Hobson and Junior Chauncey Shepard. The first game of the season saw the Eagles down Weir 42-34. The following week the Eagles opened league play with a 46-35 win over Cherokee. The Eagles then dropped their next two league games on the road to Arma and Frontenac, the Frontenac game by a single point 54-53. Starting the new year the Eagles knocked Girard from the league lead and undefeated ranks by the score of 50-40 and then went on to beat College Hi 65-42. The next three games saw the Eagles lose to Arcadia 62-55, Cherokee 52-51 and to Arma 49-43. The Eagles next action was in the league tourney at Frontenac where they defeated Arcadia 56-48 before losing to Girard. Following the tournament the Eagles lost their third league game by one point, a 60-59 overtime loss to Frontenac. The Eagles then defeated Mineral 37-36 in a non-league game. The Eagles again split their next two league games, losing to Girard and then downed College Hi 66-52. In the final league game of the season, senior Alan Hobson scored 40 points tc lead the Eagles to a 63-49 victory over Arcadia. It was a new day beginning, and a new life for the group of young people who trooped into M. R. H. S., eager to begin their high school careers. With eyes open wide with wonder, and hearts full of apprehension, these Freshmen destined to be the Senior Class of 1957, dutifully fell into their routine. We chose as our President, Alan Hobson; Vice President, Larry Long; Secretary-Treasurer and Cheerleader, Bonnie Rentfro; Fall Festival Queen Candidate, Bonnie Rentfro; Sponsor Miss Gilbert. Under their able leadership we displayed our abilities in the many activities in which we participated. We were a peppy group of young boys and girls who knew very little of the higher path of knowledge, but were eager to learn. Our minds were filled with high ideals, though we were rather shy in admitting it. To live a successful life, was one of our greatest dreams and we set to work to try to accomplish this. Our Freshman Class roll was as follows; Judy Baker, Allan Baldwin, Marilyn Barton, Gene Gates, Joseph Gates, Leona Daniel, Orville Gardenhire, Alan Hobson, Charlotte Kernick, Ella Lahey, Steve Lloyd, Larry Long, Leona Long, Eugene McColm, Frank Metcalf, Jessie Moore, Bonnie Rentfro, Edith Riley, Roy Nelson, Betty Nichols, Darrald Rose, Joyce Sartin, Donald Spangler, Marie Waits, Linda Wilson, Norma Jean Wright, and Richard Wright. Our second year in M. R. H. S. was as important as our first. We dropped from 27 to 18 stu- dents. We were sorry to lose Marilyn Barton, Gene Gates, Joseph Gates, Leona Daniel, Steve Lloyd, Edith Riley, Roy Nelson, Betty Nichols, Marie Waits, and Richard Wright, but were glad to gain Rilda Surridge the last six weeks. This year our officers chosen were; Darrald Rose, President; Donald Spangler, Vice President; Joyce Sartin, Secretary-Treasurer; Bonnie Rentfro, Cheerleader; Norma Jean Wright, Fall Festival Queen Candidate; Mrs. Closs, Sponsor. In our Junior year we didn't decrease in number. We were sorry to lose Rilda Surridge but happy to gain Jeanette Wheatley. We chose as our class President, Larry Long; Vice President, Donald Spangler; Secretary-Treasurer, Norma Jean Wright; Cheerleader, Jessie Moore; Fall Fes- tival Queen Candidate, Ella Lahey; Sponsor, Mrs. Green. Keep on the Sunny Side, our Junior Play, coached by Mrs. Green, was presented by the following cast; Allan Baldwin, Alan Hobson, Jessie Moore, Bonnie Rentfro, Leona Long, Joyce Sartin, Darrald Rose, Larry Long, Judy Baker, and Charlotte Kernick. Our Junior-Senior Ban- quet with the theme Oriental Gardens was an evening of enjoyment. In the fall of 1956 we, the dignified Seniors, realized that the distance was short, but hard traveling would be necessary in order to reach our destination. Commencement Night. We lost from our class roll Bonnie Rentfro, who completed the work for her diploma during the summer session at K. S. T. C. During the year we lost Judy Baker, leaving us with sixteen mem- bers. We elected as our Senior officers President, Alan Hobson; Vice President, Darrald Rose; Secretary-Treasurer, Norma Jean Wright; Cheerleader, Jessie Moore; Sponsor, Miss Turkington; and the lovely Norma Jean Wright as Fall Festival Queen. Our Senior Play, Betty, the Girl O' My Heart, was coached by Mrs. Green and presented by the following cast: Alan Hobson, Allan Baldwin, Danald Rose, Joyce Sartin, Leona Long, Charlotte Kernick, Jessie Moore, and Linda Wilson. We are proud of our 1957 yearbook. The staff members are: Alan Hobson, Joyce Sartin, Leona Long, Linda Wilson, Charlotte Kernick, Judy Baker, Eugene McColm, Darrald Rose, Al- lan Baldwin, Jessie Moore, Norma Jean Wright, Ella Lahey, and Jeanette Wheatley, sponsored by Miss Turkington. We have come to the end of our four years of high school and see the golden gates of oppor- tunity opening and urging us to enter. As we look back we feel sad to be leaving our many friends and our school. We wish to express our appreciation to our Superintendent, Mr. Heryford, and the Faculty for helping us through our four years of high school. 50 Sponsored by; PARSONS SUN and FIRST NATIONAL BANK - PARSONS Alan Hobson The year is 1977. The occasion is a banquet honoring the 1957 graduates of M. R. H. S. As I gaze around the room I see many of my former classmates. As 1 talk with my former friends and classmates I find that they have all achieved success in the occupations that they have cho- sen. Linda Wilson is the chief instructor of the Wilson Roller Skating School. Linda is the former world’s figure skating champion. Larry Long is a famous sports car racer. He has won the Indianapolis ”500 for the last five years and is almost ready to retire. Recently the Transcontinental Airlines announced the Air Hostess of the Year. This was none other than Leona Long. Frank Metcalf is one of the largest dairy farmers in the United States. One of the world's most famous authors is Joyce Sartin. Her latest book, How to Grow Old Gracefully was a tremendous success. Orville Gardenhire is a high ranking officer of the Marine Corps. He has 25,000 men under his command and is loved and respected by every one of them. Jeanette Wheatley is a well-known missionary. Jeanette has just returned from South Africa. Charlotte Kernick, who always wanted to be a nurse, is happily situated with the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. One of the top instructors of the Arthur Murray Dancing School is Ella Lahey. Donald Spangler is known as the world's fastest human. Donald has just recently broken another speed record with his new jet plane. He wasn't nicknamed Speedy in high school for nothing. Jessie Moore is a private secretary for the President of the General Motors Corporation. She has set many typing and shorthand records. All decked out in high heeled boots and cowboy outfits are Darrald Rose and Eugene Mc- Colm who are partners in one of the largest cattle ranches located deep in the heart of Texas. Norma Jean Wright is happily married. In her spare time she designs costumes for the New York Fashion Club. As for myself, I am the Master of Ceremonies for the Baldwin Comedy Hour which is pro- duced and directed by Allan Baldwin. While we were in high school, our motto was Today we follow; Tomorrow we lead. It seems that all of the members of the graduating class have followed this motto for successful living. Success is in the way you walk the paths of life each day. It is in the little things you do and in the things you say. Success is not in getting rich or rising high to fame. Success is not alone in winning goals which all men hope to win. It is in the man you are each day. Success is being big of heart and clean and broadminded. It is being faithful to your friends and to the stranger, kind.
