They started an organization Ten years ago, they say, Its purpose - better homemaking. They called it F. H. A. The Future Homemakers of America organization is cele- brating its tenth birthday this year. Our local chapter of 55 members includes Sara Olson, Betty Clugston and Clarice Riggs who last year received their State Degrees, the highest degree an F. H. A. 'er can receive. Doris Davidson, Virginia Ulbrich and Phyllis Mahaffey are candidates for this degree this year, three girls plan to complete their degrees in 1957 and nine girls have filed to receive theirs in 1958. Most of our other members are holders of the Junior and Chapter degrees. We plan our program of work based on the State and National Programs, including every member on a program or as a committee member during the year. It is the custom to choose two ladies to serve as Chapter Mothers. This year the girls chose Mrs. Ben Mahaffey and Mrs. Ralph Samp. Our chapter has been active this year by attending the District and State meetings and District Elec- tion. Phyllis Mahaffey of our chapter has served as District Treasurer for the past year. We have had our Mother-Daughter Banquet and our box supper which we sponsor jointly with the F. F. A. We presented a program on home economics and F. H. A. for the Lions Club and entered a float in the Fall Festival parade. As a chapter project this year, we bypassed our usual Christmas exchange of gifts to make clothing for the Coston Home near Girard. Our home projects include those in fields of sewing, meal planning and preparation, room im- provement, child care, gardening and food preservation. CARROLL SNYDER football Graduation left the 1955 Eagle Gridiron Machine with several key spots to fill, but with all return- ing lettermen the Eagles faced the coming season with a good spirit and high hopes. By mid-season the Eagle machine was one of the finest in the area. The Eagle season record was 5 wins, 2 losses and 3 ties with losses and ties coming early in the season. The Eagles opened the season by traveling to Pittsburg to battle the strong St. Marys Panthers to a 14-14 tie. On successive Friday nights McCune downed Weir and Cherokee. The Cherokee contest was a league encounter. The Eagles’ nest fell prey to the heavily favored Frontenac squad by a close margin of 7-0. Mineral was McCune's next encounter where the Eagles fought long and hard until the final gun with the score still standing 0-0. The Arma Bulldogs, champions of the Cee Cee league, edged the McCune team by only 1 point in a very thrilling last minute win. McCune next played host to Arcadia and handed them a 28-0 loss. In the final game of the season, the Eagles took to the air and defeated Girard 13-0. During the season James Mechling and Darrald Rose made player of the week and received certificates. Jack Overman, James Mechling, Lee Roy Parsons, and Richard Rauniker were chosen on the Cee Cee League all Star Squad. The names of the boys who lettered in the 1955 season are: J. York, J. Mechling, R. Rauniker, L. Parsons, J. Haigh, G. Dixon, N. Wilson, J. Overman, F. Fox, J. Frazier, A. Hobson, C. Shepard, F. Metcalf, A. Baldwin, L. Lahey, R. Holden, D. Rose. This Page Sponsored by THE PITTSBURG and MIDWAY COAL MINING COMPANY Shepard, Overman, Johnson, Mechling, Parsons, Hobson, York, Frazier, Rauniker, Lahey. The 1955-56 McCune Eagles began the season with four returning lettermen. The first game of the season saw Weir edge the Eagles 61-60. Then in the opening league game the Eagles edged the Chetokee Braves 40-39. The next three league contests saw the Eagles losing to Arma 57-38, Frontenac 37-33, and to Girard 54-49. The new year saw McCune getting off on the right foot by defeating Mineral 46-29 in a non-league game. Then winning from College Hi 54-44 and Arcadia 63-44 in league play. The First Team Tourney, held in Frontenac, was the scene of the Eagle's next action. They were defeated in first round play 47-46 by Cherokee. As the second round of league play began, the Eagles defeated Cherokee 61-47 but again lost to Arma 64-40 and Frontenac 52-45. At this point of the season the Eagles seemed to find themselves as they were impressive in defeating Girard 78-57, College Hi 80-43 and Arcadia 55-46. In the District Tournament held this year at Thayer, the Eagles lost in a first round game to the Thayer Flyers. The final gun saw the Eagles behind 69-59. This year the Crawford County League B Team Tourney was held in McCune. In the first game the B'' boys beat Cherokee 52-35. The next game however, the outcome was entirely different, they were beaten 53-49 by Girard. In the consolation game the Eagle B's” lost to Arcadia 54-51, thus tak- ing 4th place honors. We chose as our class President, Richard Rauniker; Vice President, James Mechling; Secretary-Treas- urer, Joy Miller; Cheerleader, Diane Painter; and the lovely Phyllis Mahaffey as our Fall Festival Queen. Our Class Sponsor was Miss Turkington. At the beginning and during our Senior year we were sorry to lose Terry Parsons, Cleta Tillman, and Darlene Robbins, but we were happy to gain Jack Thornberry. The boys earning a name in the sports field through the four years are: James Mechling, Richard Rauniker, Lee Roy Parsons, Jack York, Jack Haigh, Eugene Dixon, Neil Wilson, Jack Overman, and Freddie Fox. We approach our graduation with pride. Yet, we feel a tinge of sadness to be leaving our friends and our school. As a final word, we wish to express our deep appreciation and thanks to our Superintendent, Mr. Heryford, the Faculty, and the School Board members who have helped prepare us for our future careers. Sponsored by APEX-COMPTON COAL COMPANY and PEPSI COLA BOTTLING COMPANY Jack Overman This is a very momentous occasion. It is the 20th reunion of the class which graduated from MRHS in May, 1956. The reunion is being celebrated with a banquet held in the newly built Rauniker Hall. The Hall is named in honor of Richard Rauniker, our former class President. By a vote of the students he was named the outstanding graduate of the school. After I entered Rauniker Hall, while looking over the place card arrangement for the banquet, I thought of the many important places these former classmates of mine held in the world. James Mechling, always a star athlete in high school, is now starring at fullback with the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League. Phyllis Mahaffey, who had one of the main parts in our Senior play, has the lead in a motion picture recently released by Warner Brothers Studios. Lee Roy Parsons and Jack York are co-owners of a chain of television stations called the Heart of America Network. ” Although they now have a network of TV stations, they began their work with the radio station, WHB of Kansas City. Two of our classmates who were always interested in automobiles, Arthur Maffei and Neil Wilson, now own the Mafson Automobile Corporation. The corporation was formerly known as the Ford Motor Company. The Reverend Calvin Riggs, who is to administer the religious part of the program this evening, is now the Pastor of the McCune Christian Church. His twin sister, Clarice, who is now head nurse at Win- field School of Nursing, will conduct the musical portion of the program. We have three girls, Faye Howard, Jackie Baker, and Betty Clugston, who have become prominent in the musical world. Faye is singing with the Metropolitan Opera Company. Jackie is the star of her own TV program, The Jackie Baker Show, and Betty is a concert pianist. She recently completed an engagement in Carnegie Hall. Helen Stevens took to the Air in search of her fortunes. She is a stewardess for the famed Trans- World Airlines. Kay Han, photographer of the 1956 Eagle, has entered the television field and has become the first Camerawoman on the program, $64, 000, 000 Question. Virginia Ulbrich is vocational homemaking teacher at MRHS. Tonight her classes are using the Bishop method of serving which cuts down unnecessary steps and saves time. Patsy Shaffer and Bonnie Sartin are known in the designing world for their famous creations. The styles they design are along the same line of the flappers in the Twenties. They design under the name of the Bon-Sha Company, Ltd. Ronald Johnson and Jack Haigh made their Mark in the world in the field of engineering. The two compose the partnership of Johnson and Haigh, Architectual Engineers, Incorporated. Sara Olson and Betty Napier were very successful, too. They are the wives of prominent farmers in the McCune Community. In the field of nursing, we are represented by Joy Miller and Diane Painter, located in the same hospital, Joy as nurse and Diane as Head Dietician. Doris Davidson has perfected a new breed of Holstein cows. Her herd of 20 cows is supplying enough milk for New York City. Robert Baldwin and Robert Morgan are Laboratory technicians in the Thornberry Medicinal Supply Company. Their latest triumph is Never-Grow-Old pills. This concern is headed by one of our former classmates, Jack Thornberry. Gladys Lahey with her unusual speed and skill in sewing has founded a suit factory endeavoring to produce more and better suits for less money. Fred Fox and Gene Dixon were the owners of one of the largest beef cattle ranches in the State of Kansas. Recently Mr. Dixon was called upon by the President of the United States to become the new Secretary of Agriculture. Mervin McElwain is the owner of one of the largest chains of used car lots in the United States. The home office of his business is in Joplin, Missouri, where he has replaced High Dollar Joe Burtrum. I, Jack Overman, am now Head Basketball Coach of McCune Rural High. As a member of the faculty, I am happy to be here to welcome my former classmates. I can see that this banquet is going to be great success. All the member of the Class of 1956 have notified the committee that they will be on hand. It should be the greatest banquet ever held in this magnificent Rauniker Hall.
