Board of Education McCune Rural High School HAROLD WADKINS Clerk If ever there was a cause, if ever there can be a cause, worthy to be upheld by all of toil or sacrifice that the human heart can endure, it is the cause of education. 2 —Horace Mann JOHN L. MULLEN Treasurer Bad will be the day for every man when he becomes absolutely contented with the life that he is living, with the thoughts that he is thinking, with the deeds that he is doing, when there is not forever beating at the doors of his soul some great desire to do some- thing larger, which he knows that he was meant and made to do because he is still, in spite of all, the child of God. —Phillips Brooks Superin tendent O. Twelve new Green Hand Members have joined the rank of the Future Farmers. They have become familiar with the principles of the organization and have learned and studied the Creed. Aside from their class and shop work the Green Hands have started their supervised farming program. The shop teams and agriculture teams entered in the State Contest in May of 53. The shop team consisting of Dale Shenefelt and Marvin Johnston placed second in the state with 98 teams competing. Dale placed 8th and Marvin 5th in individual competition. The agriculture team placed in the Silver division in dairy judging and in the Bronze division in poultry judging. The officers chosen for the year of 1954 were: President, Dean Dixon; Vice President, Marvin Johnston; Secretary, John Quenoy; Treasurer, Carl Morgan; Reporter, Kenneth Long; and Sentinel, Lee Kemick. The Chapter had a very successful Fall Festival exhibit of livestock, crops and farm mechanics. Ribbons were awarded to the first five places and grand champions received a purple rosette. The FFA float placed second in the parade. The FFA boys have enjoyed trips to the State Fair at Hutchinson, the American Royal at Kansas City, and John Deere day in Pittsburg. They have entered in the Parsons Baby Beef show, prepared a program of work, held the annual Parent and Son banquet with Professor Hog Thompson from Oklahoma A M College as guest speaker. They rated Silver emblem in the district shop contest. They have helped plan the FFA-FHA box supper and are looking forward to the state contest in shop and agriculture at Manhattan. They have sent in one State Farmer application and one State Farmer is working on his American Farmer Degree, the highest recognition in the FFA. Other major projects of the FFA have been to put a concrete curb around the new track, and to ex- tend the concrete wing north of the shop. Other major shop jobs have been: post hole diggers, four- wheel wagons, a squeeze chute, a grain elevator, and a manure scoop, homemade tractors, garden tractors, feed racks, and many other smaller projects as well as machinery and tractor repairs and over- hauls. The game originally scheduled for Friday night was postponed until Saturday night because of a rain storm. The Panthers caught McCune entirely off guard and beat them 20 to 7. The next game Weir came to McCune for a homecoming game. The Eagles, playing their first game on the newly built football field beat Weir 13 to 0. The Eagles went to Cherokee for the first league contest. Cherokee came out on top with a 19 to 2 victory. The next foe for McCune was Frontenac. The Eagles edged the Raiders by a score of 7 to 6. The McCune Eagles traveled to Mineral for their next game, where the Eagles, be- cause of poor defensive play, lost this game 25 to 7. The next game saw McCune battling for second place with the Arma Bulldogs. Arm a won at the count of 20 to 7. Galena came to McCune for the next encounter. McCune won the hard fought con- test 13 to 7 scoring both touchdowns in the last half. The Champion Girard Trojans came to McCune expecting an easy victory, but the Eagles, fighting hard, held the Trojans down until the final two minutes when Girard pushed over for the winning of a 7 to 0 score. In the final game of the season, the Arcadia Bearcats fell before the Eagles in a 32 to 0 victory. The Eagles, with 4 wins and 5 defeats for the season, enjoyed one of its better seasons of the last few years. Letterrnen to be lost by graduation are: Captain, Kenneth Fox; Lee Kemick, Morris Kernick, Larry Henderson, Archie Ulbrich, Bill Nutt, Dean Dixon, Bob Gardenhire, Ronnie Tridle and Marvin Johnston. Returning letterrnen to form the nucleus of next year's team are: Co-Captains, Larry Kelley and John Quenoy; Jack Overman, Delbert Shepard, Gaylen Allen, Bill Clark, James Mechling and Herbert Harrington. The McCune Eagles opened the Basketball Campaign with four lettermen and only one Senior as a starter in the regular lineup. Coach Jursche has been rebuilding with the under- classmen. Inexperience and lack of height has caused many of the early season close score losses. As the season progresses and many of the boys gain valuable experience, the Eagles should be hard to beat by next year. Three Class History —Larry Barnes In September of 1950 our class of 42 freshmen enrolled in McCune Rural High School to be- gin a four year term leading to our graduation. We were curious and confused but full of enthu- siasm and determination. We chose as our class President, Maxine Metcalf; Vice President, Ralph Baldwin; Secretary- Treasurer, Ruth Bratton; Cheerleader, Maxine McMillan; and Sponsor, Mr. Comer. Our class roll contained the following names; Gus Autem, Ralph Baldwin, Larry Barnes, Ruth Bratton. Rita Cockrell, Dean Dixon, Kenneth Fox, Robert Gardenhire, Margaret Goodhall, Larry Henderson, Betty Huston, Marvin Johnston, Verna Mae Kem, Morris Kemick, Lee Kernick, Donna Kitchen, Margaret Leonard, Kenneth Long, Marie Markley, Jerry Mattox, Maxine Metcalf, John Mishler, Vera Mohler, Barbara Morgan, Carl Morgan, Margaret McGown, Helen McColm, Maxine McMillan, Bill Nutt, Margaret Painter, Fred Perkins, Bess Anna Riggs, Maurice Scales, Neva Shenefelt, Bobby Short, Maxine Stewart, Ronnie Tridle, Archie Ulbrich, Barbara Ulbrich, Carol Weber, Elsie Wort, and Joan Wright. We were sorry to lose Gus Autem and Donna Kitchen before the term ended. We began our Sophomore year with even more determination to succeed. We gained James Riggs and Marilyn Keeley but missed Rita Cockrell, Jerry Mattox, John Mishler, Maurice Scales, Bobby Short, and Carol Weber. We chose as our President, Fred Perkins; Vice President, Marvin Johnston; Secretary-Treasurer, Barbara Ulbrich; Cheerleader, Marilyn Keeley; and Sponsor, Mrs. Closs. We lost Marilyn Keeley and James Riggs at the beginning of our Junior year but gained Julius Vest, who joined us the second semester. Our class officers were: President, Lee Kernick; Vice President, Maxine McMillan; Secretary-Treasurer, Leona Kious; Cheerleader, Maxine McMillan; and Sponsor, Mrs. Green. Room for One More, our Junior Play, coached by Mrs. Green, was presented by the fol- lowing cast: Vera Mohler, Fred Perkins, Ruth Bratton, Marvin Johnston, Barbara Morgan, Morris Kernick, Maxine McMillan, Ralph Baldwin, Maxine Metcalf, Maxine Stewart, Bess Anna Riggs, and Verna Mae Kern. Our Junior-Senior Banquet with the theme of Under Western Skies, ” will be long remembered as an evening of enjoyment. At last we have reached our Senior year with the title of Dignified Seniors, the shining goal of all our achievements during the past twelve years of school. We had participated in many activities and organizations in the past but our Senior year proved to be our most trium- phant. We chose as our President, Marvin Johnston; Vice President, Dean Dixon; Secretary- Treasurer, Margaret Painter; Cheerleader, Maxine McMillan; and Sponsor, Miss Turkington. Two of our classmates, Marvin Johnston and Ronnie Tridle, have attended school at MRHS for twelve years. Those bovs earning a name in the sports field were: Kenneth Fox, Ronnie Tridle, Bill Nutt, Marvin Johnston, Larry Henderson, Lee Kernick, Morris Kemick, Archie Ulbrich, Dean Dixon, and Robert Gardenhire. We were very proud to have our lovely Miss Leona Kious chosen as the Fall Festival Queen. We published our 1954 annual, The Eagle, with the following staff: Carl Morgan, Barbara Morgan, Marvin Johnston, Ruth Bratton, Barbara Ulbrich, Kenneth Fox, Maxine Metcalf, Vera Mohler, Neva Shenefelt, Maxine McMillan, Marie Markley, Margaret Painter, Maxine Stewart, Leona Kious, and Bess Anna Riggs. Our Senior Play Pollyanna coached by Mrs. Leah Green was an outstanding success with the following cast: Barbara Morgan, Vera Mohler, Marvin Johnston, Ralph Baldwin, Morris Kernick, Lee Kernick, Betty Huston, Maxine Stewart, Barbara Ulbrich, and Robert Gardenhire. We approach our graduation with pride. Yet, we feel a tinge of sadness to be leaving our friends and our school. As a final word we wish to express our deep appreciation and thanks to our Superintendent, Mr. Heryford, the Faculty and the School Board members who have helped prepare us for our future careers. May we remember our motto, Face the sun and the shadows will fall behind. Whether our lives are beautiful and sublime, or commonplace and unattractive, depends to a large ex- tent upon our appreciation of the true values of life. P. S. Just received word that Vera Mohler won first place in the State in the DAR Good Citizens Contest. Senior Class Prophecy —Vera Mohler My, here it is, the year 2000 already. That makes it time for me to edit another issue of THE CHRONICLES OF THE 1954 EAGLES. The task of locating my classmates and their occu- pations will be less difficult with my invention, the Photo-Xrayonic Machine, which give a full account of a person's activities when his picture is dropped in. First, I'll see what Marvin Johnston, our class president is doing. He is no less than Presi- dent of the Earth. He is now sending his-special envoy, Margaret McGown to Mars to make a trade agreement with Morris Kernick, the President of Mars. Here we find that Kenneth Long, Secretary of Agriculture on the Earth, is awarding Dean Dixon a trophy for being the most distinguished farmer of the century. The world's champion typist, Maxine McMillan, has set a new typing record of 1, 200 words a minute on the new typo-teletron. Marie Markley is organizing a party to explore the Moon. Archie Ulbrich is to be the chief engineer; Helen McColm will be the dietitian; Verna Mae Kern will be the nurse of the party; and Neva Shenefelt and Elsie Wort will go as missionaries to the inhabitants there. Lee Kernick has just broken the Universe's rocket speed record. He traveled 186, 000 miles a second in a rocket ship designed by Kenneth Fox. Barbara Morgan is the new beauty consultant giving advice on makeup, hair-styles, and clothing to wear wh°n talking over the TV-telephone. Ruth Bratton has just published her latest book entitled, WHY PEOPLE BELIEVED IN FLYING SAUCERS. Larry Henderson followed out Einstein's theory of time as the fourth dimension, and is now producing 4-D movies. Betty Huston is starring in his latest movie, From Here to Jupiter. Bill Nutt is manufacturing plastic houses that can be taken down and set up again in a few hours. Robert Gardenhire has invented a hydrogen lamp that is no more harmful to the eyes than the sun's rays. Bess Anna Riggs has designed a more slenderizing space uniform. The famous model, Margaret Painter, is modeling it for her. Dr. Ralph Baldwin and his youth specialist, Joan Wright, have invented a youth preser- vative which keeps people young and active up to the age of 100. This youth preservative has raised the life expectancy to the age of 120. Ronnie Tridle is the head of a company which manufactures the Basic Seven Pills. They contain all of the nutrients necessary for maintaining health. Ronnie's head designer, Maxine Stewart, is working on a more appetizing shape and color for the pills. The world famous lecturer, Barbara Ulbrich, is to appear at the well known Leonard School for Women on Mars, whose president is Margaret Leonard. The trillionaire, Larry Barnes, returned from a vacation trip to Mars on the Carl Morgan Interplanetary Transportation System. During the trip the passengers were delightfully enter- tained by the famous vocalist, Leona Kious, and efficiently served by the attractive stewardess, Maxine Metcalf. Now I must give my Photo-Xrayonic Machine a rest and begin to organize this material for the 2000 issue of THE CHRONICLES OF THE 1954 EAGLES. 48 Last Will and Testament --Barbara Ulbrich we, the Senior class in the year 1954, of the city of McCune, county of Crawford, and state of Kansas, being of sound mind and of lawful age; do hereby make, publish and declare this to be our last will and testament.
