All of the clubs provided an understanding of cul- tural exchange and history of their lan- guage while planning activities that are both fun and educational for the students. The French club- conducted two car washes, a progressive dinner and a teacher service project. The members earned points from all activities that went towards lettering for a jacket. This year, we have a freshman that is going to letter and two sophomores that have lettered already. That is so unusual and it shows that they really want to work for the club, said Trina Olssen, sponsor. Members of the German club used their knowledge of German culture to under- stand feature films and participate in the year-end banquet at the Old Heidelburg Restaurant in Houston. The club provided a cultural extention of the ordinary pro' cess of learning a foreign language said Hannelore Jackson, sponsor. The dead language as it was some- times called, was revived this year as members of the Latin club participated in area and state conventions and spon- sored the first annual Language Olympics. By forming a congregation of unique individuals, Latin club incorporates the social aspects of high school with the learning experience, said Helen Flor- ence, sponsor. Having a fiesta was always fun, but Spanish club was more than that. Ac- tivities with others who wanted to learn about Spanish culture kept the club in full swing. Connie Kirkland, sponsor, provid- ed educational, and yet enjoyable, ac- tivities to help members understand the origin of the language. Learning about the history and culture of a language as well as the language itself helped to make the four language clubs a successful educational experi- ence.
