hile most of the student body was sleeping, the swimmers were at the Woodlands Athletic Center practicing in the sometimes not so warm water. Work out began every morning at 5:30 a.m. so the swimmers had ample time to swim several thousand years be- fore returning to school. Both the girl's team and boys team faced a much tougher schedule than in years past. But by working hard and pull- take your mark . . . stroke for stroke ing together as a team, the swimmers came through with a rather successful season. We may have gotten off to a slow start, but by the end of the season eve- ryone was swimming best times. More people qualified for State than last year. We proved to be a dominating team in the region, said Sunny Smiley, Girl's team captain. All American times were made by Sun- Heather Cunningham vigorously strokes toward the wall, . , x, N i... in ny Smiley and Lori Walker while Mic Self turned in an All American Cor eration time, A tough schedule was not the thing that presented the aquajocks wi problem. In February a chlorine gas at the WAC ended practice early and 1 fifteen swimmers to the hospital. Whili one was seriously injured, everyone shaken up. Who says swimming isr dangerous sport? But their duties far exceeded water supply. They were there to help the players in times of needy they were the school trainers. Their duties as trainers were to wrap players' ankles, knees and, wrists with tape. They were very dependable when you were out there hurt, said Paul Moriarty. The trainers were under the direction ot Mr. Larry Diedeker and Mrs. Maria Thomp- son. b b Andy Winkler shows us what pain is really like.
