h ng kong ,ohooey W, ost people relate being new with being better. One group of people who agrees with this statement is the members of the newly-formed judo team. The club was founded by junior Richard Jones and his instructor, Andy Connelly, a fourth degree black belt. I have trained in judo before and I realized that a club here would be a good idea, said Jones. The purpose of the seven member team is to teach self-defense and to pro- vide a fun way to exercise. Through sev- eral hours of practice each week, team members learned many ways to protect themselves in case they ever needed to. A standard judo match consists of ei' ther getting your opponent down to the mat using different techniques such as a pin or a choke or getting him to surrender. Team members were able to compete throughout the year and participate in the state tournament. ' 'Q - Richard Jones holds Andy Parks and forces him to surrender. 1--.,-:i. ik , I . .
