A TesT is given To deTermine adapTibiliTy for various insTrumenTs, which is very simple and passed by mosT sTudenTs. AfTer enT-ering The ban-d you are required To puf all The efforT info iT ThaT is possible. because wiThouT cooperaTion and efforT a band cannoT succeed. Each sTudenT is required To puT in 30 minuTes of home pracfice each 'day wiTh a week's ToTal of aT leasT Three hours. Also, each sTudenT is required To aTTend all rehearsals and classes. For each pracTice card, each rehearsal, full uniform aT concerfs, and under ofher circumsTances The sTudenT receives poinTs. AT The end of The year, if The sTudenT has earned 200 poinTs he or she is eligible for a band leTTer or pin. For Those who have puT TorTh exTra efforT and earned aT leasT 250 poinTs, a sTar is placed on The leTTer. By This mefhod, we feel The sTudenT has someThing To sTrive Tor, Thus making The work much more inTeresTing. AT The presenT we are aTTempTing some very difficulT Sousa marches, and our success will depend upon The Time we have To work on Them. Due To The facT ThaT our program is so arranged ThaT we only rehearse Two Times a week, our selecTion of numbers musT be limiTed. The band is required To play aT The Public School Picnic. Lufheran School Picnic, Decorafion Day, and if we desire. Commencemenf. Some of The oTher acTiviTies we will Take parT in are: Homecomings, Music Week Program, and a Spring ConcerT. The biggesT evenT for The year will be our banquef aT The close of school. which everyone is looking forward To. On March I4, I942, The band aTTended The DisTricT Band ConTesT aT Collinsville. The required number for our concerT was Lyceum, by OTis Taylor. and The selecTed numbers were: Aurora by Paul Yoder and march Brigadier General, by Carl King. Considering everyThing, our band made a very good showing and played nicely, alThough we received only a second raTing. Our compeTiTion was greaf This year because s-everal of The schools, whose enrollmenT is Twice as large as ours. were Taken ouT of class B, The class in which They have always played, and puT in class C wifh The smaller schools. Some of The larger schools compeTing 'wiTh our band were Highland, Virden, Benld and MT. Clive. Every school compefing wiTh us aT The conTesT Teaches music in The grade schools, which cerTainly develops a firm Toundafion for sTudenTs in Their high school music.
