Text from Pages 1 - 188 of the 1974 volume:

Foreword The sky is falling; Blue pieces lie among the daisies. If I pick one up And hold it to my eye The world is simple. Stars sparkle in the grass I'll twist one In my hair, and Run barefoot through The scattered sky. When the sun plummets down Catch it for a Yellow ball. We'll arc it high Where the sky once was. -Lyra Ward 1974 SPARTA McConnellsburg High School McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania 17233 Volume 32 Table of Contents Dedication .............................4 Introduction............................6 Sports..................................22 Activities..............................46 Administration-Faculty .................68 Seniors ................................84 Senior Happenings......................112 Classes................................120 Advertisements.........................144 MR. JAMES BLEVINS MRS. MARILYN BLEVINS 4 Dedication We the Class of 1974 wish to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. and Mrs. James Blevins. Where can we possibly begin to tell the story of how these two people have added so much to the lives of the students of MHS? Mrs. Blevins teaches ninth grade General Science, tenth grade biology, and Advanced Biology. She instructs each of these classes with such skill and knowledge. She teaches in such a way as to give pleasure and knowledge to the students without their losing interest. Besides teaching, Mrs. Blevins is a past cheerleading advisor for the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads. She also formed the Junior High Cheerleading group composed of seventh, eighth, and ninth graders. Mr. Blevins instructs in vocational education. He is a friend and wonderful teacher to his students. He passes his knowledge on to them and enables them to learn all they can in the field that their interests lie. Mr. Blevins is also an advisor for the Future Farmers of America. He has a great interest in the club and in its members. He helps see that each member is able to perform to the best of his ability. The Class of 1974 joins with former graduates and undergraduates in saying thank-you and best wishes to our teachers and friends — Mr. and Mrs. James Blevins. 5 All Your Tomorrows Depend 6 On What You Do Today 7 There's Nothing You Can't 8 Do That Can Be Done 10 And They Reached Out 11 Life Gets More Exciting With Each Passing Day 13 I've Found A Pastime To Dwell On 15 But Shall Teach Them ... 17 A Look At The Phases, 18 ■ Sft Shapes, and Feelings 19 Now It 20 s Over 21 DNT CHAMBERLAIN • KIRK CUNNINGHAM • DENNIS DeSHONG • STEVE DeSHONG • REX DIVEN VDY HORTON • DORIANN JOHNSON • JIM JOHNSTON • THERESA KEEBAUGH • JOHN KENDAL kNA MELLOTT • JOYCE MELLOTT • DEBBIE MIHALICK • SHEILA OTT • CRAIG PAYLOR • KEN PEC ICKY SOUDERS • BOB STRAIT • CLOYD SWOPE • LYNN BLACK • RANDY BOLINGER • WALT ;SHONG • ANDY DOYLE • RODNEY FIX • BILL GRESS • ROBERTA HANN • DAWN HEILIG • DAV ARTZ • DENNY McELHANEY • DEBBIE MELLOTT • HARRY MELLOTT • JEFF MELLOTT • SAL ASHABAUGH • GARY BENEDICT • TIM BRUMBAUGH • BRENDA CHRISTIAN • RANDY CLEVER • TOl REG GRESS • TIM GRESS • LYNN GRISSINGER • JAMES HENDERSHOT O HY HERSHEY • ARTH cGARVEY • STEPHANIE McLUCAS • BARRY MELLOTT • RANDY RICHAF DEBBIE SEVILLE • LI RIGHT • ROY BARNETT • BRAD BOLINGER • ROSS BUTERBAUGH • Ch IANE JOHNSON • HOMER LYNCH • STEVE MELLOTT • TOM MELLOTT EIDERS • PAT SHAFER • JILL SHEFFIELD • TERRY STRAIT UTERBAUGH • DAVID EVERTS • BOB DeSHONG • JEFF SPRENKLE • M DAVIS • TONY SPRIGGS • ROGER SOWERS • DANNY ROBINSON • MO HEEDERS • JO-ANN KERLIN • LISA MELLOTT • PATTY CUTSHAW • JANA ONT CHAMBERLAIN • KIRK CUNNINGHAM • DENNIS DeSHONG STEV NDY HORTON • DORIANN JOHNSON • JIM JOHNSTON • THERESA KE • o R P )AVIS • DIXIE DECKE IIKE OTT • MITCH OT| EY TRUAX • DWIG . These girls practice many long hours so they can become varsity cheer- leaders of the future. A delicious meal was served at the Fire Hall by the Auxiliary. It can be concluded that everyone had a very enjoyable time. Mr. Mills, administrative assistant, gave some words of advice to the Juniors and Seniors. Harry Harris anxiously awaits the serving of the dinner. Pam Richards, president of the Junior class, presents tokens of the class's appreciation to Mrs. Strait. Mr. Mellott. and Mr. Harteis. 114 Dinner is served. The Spirit of Youth Harry Harris and Diane Jefferson enter into the “Spirit of Youth. Dancing was an essential part of the evening. 115 Jackie Kelso and Steve Hollinshead could have danced all night Pink and yellow served as the main color scheme for the Prom. Pam Richards— Prom Queen THE QUEEN'S COURT LEFT TO RIGHT Debbie Hann and Ken Peck; Joyce Mellott and Ed Burrall; John Ott and Pam Richards; Cherry Hill; Jackie Shimer and Bob Strait; Michele Kendall and Andy Horton. 117 The highlight of the evening was the coronation. John Ott and Pam Richards dance to the Queen's Dance. Pieces of April . Senior Pictures and Yearbook Sales It says it allI One of the highlights of being a senior is when everyone receives his senior pictures. Many days are spent running around asking the same question over and over again, Do you have any of your pictures with you? Every senior enjoys this though. It is one of the pleasures enjoyed by seniors. Yearbook sales come every year in late September. Each senior receives his instructions and blanks, then they plunge into work for their class. This year, Larry Lane was the high salesman. He should be commend- ed for his service and loyalty to his class. 118 Scott Barber. Wanda McLaughlin. Jana Mellott, and Steve DeShong exchange their senior pictures with one another. Larry Lane was the high yearbook salesman for the class of '74. Magazine Sales MAGAZINE TOP SALESMEN: Craig Paylor. third; Cheryl Helman, fourth; Jana Mellott, fifth; Cindy Bivens, first; Mark Sheffield, second. The seniors' money making project for the year was the magazine sale. Each senior received a list of the magazines and order blanks and began the two week sale. The company offered prizes to each person who sold so many magazines. Each person could have received at least four different prizes. A mug, which had a Spartan head and McConnellsburg High School written on it, was offered to anyone who sold three magazines. The three different homerooms had a contest and the room with the highest money sales received a pizza and coke party. Our goal was set at $2,500. We surpassed this goal by selling $2,989.76. 119 MAGAZINE MANAGERS: Pam Richards, Joe Sharpe, Scott Barber, Betsy Hawbacker. NOT PICTURED: Joyce Mellott. Jeff 52. 65, 139 Wright, Linda 55, 64. 134 Yaukey, Troy 20, 143 175 Farewell Those school girl days of telling tales and biting nails are gone. But in my mind know they will still live on and on. But how do you thank someone Who has taken you from crayons to perfume. It isn't easy but I'll try. If you wanted the sky. I'd write across the sky in letters That would soar a thousand feet high. To Sir, With Love. The time has come for dosing books and long last looks must end. And as leave know that am leaving my best friend. A friend who taught me right from wrong And weak from strong, that's a lot to learn. What can give you in return? If you wanted the moon, Td try to make a start. But would rather let you give my heart. To Sir, With Love. Those awkward years Have hurried by, why did they fly away? Why is it. Sir, Children grow up to be people one day? What takes the place of climbing trees And dirty knees in the world outside? What is there for you I can buy? If you wanted the world. I'd surround it with a wall; Td scrawl These words with letters ten feet tall. To Sir, With Love.
