1968 SPARTA MC CODINELLSBURGHIGH SCHOOL MC CONNELLSBURG, ADMINISTRATION. . . 21 SENIORS................. 34 JUNIORS............. ' 6| TABLE OF CONTENTS SOPHOMORES.............65 JUNIOR HIGH............70 ACTIVITIES.............83 SPORTS...............101 ADVERTISEMENTS.......115 INDEX................130 EDITOR Sharon Black CO. EDITORS Carolyn Hunsecker Lindsay Riggs FOREWORD We first entered MHS in September, 1962, and we are now preparing to leave. We have spent six years here-perhaps the best years of our lives-years full of events both large and small which have influenced our actions and thoughts and shaped the destiny of our lives. There have been times of happiness and times of sadness; moments of excitement and antici- pation, and moments of boredom and disappointment. None of us will forget the day when we, as juniors, finally received our class rings; nor will we forget the fun of decorating for the prom, or the excitement and hard work involved with the senior play. Equally as vivid are the memories of half-finished homework, biology labs, French tapes, frantic cheering at basketball games, and candy and candle sales to finance our senior trip. Many memories will fade as the years pass; many events will gain new significance. In this 1968 edition of the SPARTA, we have recorded as much of our lives for the past six years as was possible. Above all else, however, we have tried to capture the essence of high school life; the true spirit of MHS. DEDICA TION We, the class of 1968, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. and Mrs. Max Stackhouse as our way of showing our appreciation of the many things they have done for us. Always friendly, always willing to help, they have made our days at MHS more meaningful and bright. For all their guidance, hard work, and sincere interest in not only us, but in all the people who pass through their classes, we thank them and feel we are speaking for the entire school. SET IN THIS BACKGROUND V 7 V. }rr SENIORS WITH PARADISE ISLE The 1967 Junior-Senior Prom climaxed months of planning and preparation by the prom committee. Work on the annual school dance began early in January when the theme Paradise Isle was chosen. Working closely with the banquet committee on decorations, the color scheme of green and yellow was soon chosen and co-ordinating decorations ordered. With the arrival of the decorations, plans for the decorating were drawn up and decorating began April 26th, two nights before the dance. After the banquet on April 28th juniors and seniors began arriving for the prom. In place of the old, familiar gym the guests found a luscious Hawaiian paradise. Music was provided by the Jades and refreshments were served. The 1967 prom proved to be one of the best proms ever given by a junior class. JUNIOR ■ SENIOR APRIL Mr. Creager After weeks of preparation and planning by a committee of the Junior class, 150 members of the Junior and Senior classes, administrators, faculty members, and their wives joined in a general convocation in the all-purpose room of the McConnellsburg School on April 28, 1967. The tables were decorated with palms constructed from crepe and bent candles. A ham dinner as well as enlightening remarks by honored members of all groups were enjoyed. After Martin Shimer thanked the juniors, speeches— of both humorous and serious natures-were made by Mr. Shearer, Mr. Creager, and Mr. Welsh. Mr. Shearer VISITING STUDENTS While Louise is here for a year, she is staying with her aunt, Mrs. Audrey Greathead. She came to learn what life and school is like in America. She enjoys school here, but has found that it is not as strict as it is in England. In the beginning of June, Louise will return to her home in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England. The Woodcock family is in this area for one year. They serve as Methodist missionaries to the Congo. The three children in higli school are Elaine, a junior, Nancy in eighth grade, and Ar- nold in seventh grade. In August when their furlough is over, they will return to Africa. When asked their opinion of the school and community, Elaine said that she would rather be riding her bike through the bush. Nancy likes school, especially cheerleading. Arnold thinks he can learn more by farming than by going to school. Elaine, Arnold, and Nancy Woodcock Louise Glasse ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Harold C. SENIORS CLASS SONG THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM To dream the impossible dream, To fight the unbeatable foe, To bear with unbearable sorrow, To run where the brave dare not go, To right the unrightable wrong, To be better far than you are, To try when your arms are too weary, To reach the unreachable star. This is my quest—to follow that star No matter how hopeless, no matter how far, To be willing to give When there’s no more to give • To be willing to die So that honor and justice might live. And 1 know, if I’ll only be true To that glorious quest. My heart will lie peaceful and calm When I'm laid to my rest. And the world will be better for this— That one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star. The motion of things occurring everyday of their school years. The motion of studying, talking, laughing, eating. The special motions of special days, cheering, watching, dancing. The continual motion of school days, campaigning, typing, solving problems, walking. Now, as Seniors, we are involved in a new motion, the motion of waiting. Wait- ing for the day when we walk across the stage to receive our diplomas. Even at this time motion will not cease for us, it will have only begun. ARE TEACHERS HUMAN? “I’m playing the part of a fish, so I thought I’d try to look like one.” CAST Edward Fowler.............................Ellis Souders Arbutis Meadows.........................Barbara Decker C. Edward Fowler, a new principal, and Arbutis Meadows, a new teacher, have a problem in the form of the head of the school board, Mr. Stone, a pompous, cigar-smoking terror. Mr. Stone, needing a husband for his daughter, picks Mr. Fowler, who agrees to the marriage on one condition: that Arbutis is allowed to continue with the production of a nonsensical play-written by Hortense which Mr. Stone objected to. The play is a huge success, Mr. Stone frees Mr. Fowler of his agreement, and as the seniors celebrate, Arbutis and Edward make plans for their future. “Saw the play tonight-it was pretty good, pretty good. “English may as well be a foreign language to Puddenhead: he barely speaks it.” “What, may I ask, is going on here? wmm Most Likely To Succeed are Ellis Souders, Sharon Black and Tom Duffey. All three of these students are aiming high in life and the best part of it is that all three will make it. No matter what the circumstances, you can always count on a lau from Mark Seville, Hiram Richards, and Linda Lane. OUTSTANDING SENIORS John Kendall, Carol Mellott, Wanda Merrel, and Dave Sowers have been voted Most Athletic. Each in their own way con- tribute greatly to the very serious business of high school sports. To be voted Best All Around is quite an honor. Mary Reed, Lindsay Riggs, Barb Decker, and Bob Yost deserve this honor. For the past six years our class has come to know and depend on these four students in any event and at any time. Betty Sipes, Joyce Heinbaugh, and Gerald Peck will long be remembered as the student’s student. They never fail to take a book home or to burn the midnight oil. Without a doubt John Akers, Joy Buterbaugh, and Carolyn Hunsecker are the Most Musical. Both John and Joy are dedicated band members and Carolyn has been chorus accompanist for the last few years. 57 MISS BETSY SIMMERS MR. Since Mr. Hartle’s arrival last summer, we have performed at several festivals; participated in Halloween parades at Hagerstown, McConnell- sburg, Mercersburg, and Chantbersburg; held our annual Christmas concert; and are now re- hearsing for the spring concert. We have order- ed new uniforms, which are expected to arrive in the spring. The Junior Band is working hard and striving for perfection. Mr. Hartle has formed a combination dance band and pep band, which plays at all home basketball games and really creates enthusiasm and sup- port. All the above things were accomplished through the efforts of Mr. Hartle, whom we wish to thank at this time for all his patience, hard work, time, and help. 86 DANCE BAND Standing: Andy Hartman, Mary Jarrett, Lisa Winter, Sharon Black, Tom Duffey, Ronnie Martz, Danny Winter, George Cornelius, Linda Souders, Brian Barber. Last year our boy’s varsity team won the county title and the Cove League title and our girl’s varsity tied with Southern Fulton for the county championship. Both teams have en- thusiastic players that more or less eat, think, and sleep basketball twenty-four hours a day during the season. Not only do our teams have enthusiastic players, they have two tremendously enthusiastic coaches, Mr. Stackhouse and Mrs. Elvey, who give their all when basketball season is upon them. SENIOR GIRL VARSITY MEMBERS: Judy Souders, Barbara Decker, Jean Sny- der, Linda Lane, Carol Mellott, Lindsay Riggs. VARSITY BASKETBALL SCOREKEEPERS Scorekeepers are the unknown and unthanked people be- hind the scenes of basketball games. They make up a vital part of each and every basketball game, the keeping of the score, as the name suggests. Sharon Black and Greg Gordon have been doing this job and doing it well for the past two years. Scorekeeping isn’t any Simple Simon job, it requires every minute of ones attention and an unlimited knowledge of the game basketball. One of the teams Greg keeps score for is the Junior varsity basketball team. We’re proud of these boys who play hard, practice hard, and win hard. Whether winning or losing, they’re a great team, with all players heading for positions on the varsity squad.
