1967 Sparta Editors Kathy Sipes Betsy Simmers McConnellsburg High School McConnellsburg, Penna. Foreword We, the class of 1967, would like to share with you the highlights of our years at M. H. S. As the years go by and memories of our school days grow dim, we hope that by reading through our 1967 Sparta those memories will be aroused in our minds once again. This Sparta is just a small book in which all of our experiences could not be written but we hope that each page will bring back memories which are never to be forgotten. 2 Table of Contents Administration Juniors Freshmen - - Page 11 Seniors - - Page 51.......Sophomores Page 55 - - - Foster Swope When in future years we look back at our high school days, many of our fondest memories will be of the association we had with Mr. Swope. His keen sense of humor, witty sayings, and friendly smile made blue days less dreary and happy times more joyous. Mr. Swope has been an excellent teacher, a wise counselor, and a wonderful friend. No one can be more than that. If in striving onward toward higher goals, we meet with any measure of success, part of it, at least, will be due to the foundations Mr. Swope gave to us. For doing this and being what you have to us, Mr. Swope, we dedicate this yearbook to you as our way of saying ‘ Thank you”. 4 SCHOOL BOARD--FIRST ROW: Harold Reed, Hollis Mellott, Mrs. Stevens, Kenneth Richards, Richard Barton. CLASS SONG THE EXODUS SONG This land is mine, God gave this land to me. This brave and ancient land to me. And when the morning sun reveals her hills and plains, Then I see a land where children can run free. So take my hand and walk this land with me, And walk this lovely land with me. Tho I am just a man, when you are by my side, With the help of God I know I can be strong. So take my hand and walk this land with me, And walk this golden land with me. Tho I am just a man, when you are by my side, With the help of God 1 know 1 can be strong. To make this Land our home. If I must fight. I'll fight to make this land our own. Until 1 die this land is mine! CLASS HYMN i-:. We have a senior high soccer team, and this year a junior high soccer team was organized. Not only is soccer becoming bigger in high schools, but it is a sport that is now entering into the more important professional sports. Soccer is essentially a sim- ple game in which players give vent to one of the most basic human urges, namely, to kick some-thing. It is energetic and open enough to be easily followed from the farthest perch. 92 Foster Swope Martin Shimer Our Senior George Smith Eugene Long Bill Kies Soccer Stars Rick Peer Steve Hoover Senior Track Tom Jones Martin Shimer Eugene Long George Smith Stars Denny Seiders 94 Track Team Every spring, Mr. Cover, coach of the track team has all the members running to get in shape for the season. From the word start, the members are off and running to finish each race first and faster than their competitors. Last year was the first time for the team to enter into a track and field meet between all the schools of Franklin and Fulton counties. Our team placed in two events, fourth in the 880 relay and fifth in the one mile relay. Everyone is looking forward to an exciting and successful season this year. TOP ROW . H.S. it is no different. The first warm days of spring, Mr. Stackhouse has the team working out. It is very exciting to watch the outfielders catch fly balls from coach's bat, the infielders catching grounders, and the pitchers and catchers loosening up on the side- lines. Our coach is always trying to improve the team to perfection. Even after the season starts there is practice every night for two hours. Everyone gets a chance to prove himself at any position and also with the bat. We would like to say 'thank you' to Mr. Stackhouse for his time and effort spent with the team. 96 1966 Scores McConnells burg Opponents 8 Fannett Metal 1 5 Southern Fulton 3 2 James Buchanan 3 12 Scotland 5 4 St. Thomas 8 0 Greencastle 10 9 Scotland 17 4 Fannett Metal 3 2 St. Thomas 12 = n Steve Hoover Martin Shimer Rick Peer Tom Jones Gary Stevens Senior Greats Baseball Bill Kies Gary Lininger Greg Garland Junior High Soccer FIRST ROW: Steve Kendall, Harold Fix, Ronald Sipes, Stephen Truax, Paul Cutchall, Stanley Bain, Mack Peck, Eldon Strait, Jackie Mellott.
