The theme of this year’s Sparta is “Memories Are Made of This. In a few years, high school will be only a memory to each of us. Our familiar high school way of life will exist only in memories. It would be impossible to put all these memories into pictures and words, but we have tried to include most of the major events, some of the smaller events, and events that happen every day- for these are what memories are made of. McConnellsburg Joint High School McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania Presents 1962-63 Sparta Published By Senior Class Volume IV

Licking Creek Closes High School The close of the 1961-62 school term rang down the curtain on another of Pennsylvania's small high schools. The Licking Creek Township High School liad a membership of 74 pupils when school closed during the first week of June. 1962. and the Licking Creek Township School Board agreed to close the school, and the McConnellsburg Joint School Board promised to accept the pupils on a tuition basis as of the term beginning September 4. By resolution, modern language taught in schools of vania. these was Green Hill school notified in 1962, to diate steps these defi- approval withdrawn school, diate ef- would be the State Council of Education mandated that, beginning with September of 1961, ’music, art and foreign shall be all high Pennsyl- None of taught at and the board was March, take imme- to correct ciencies or would be for the high The imme- fect of this that gradu- ates of Green Hill High School would be denied entrance to college and other institutions of higher learning. Under such conditions, it would also be possible that the State Superintendent would withhold part or all of the $75,000 appropria- tion due Licking Creek township, if the township failed to operate an approved school system. Licking Creek could not afford to provide space, teachers and materials for the additional required subjects, and was decided that it would be much cheaper to buy the secondary educational needs from the McConnellsburg Joint High School. The Fulton County Plan for larger administration and attendance units, as planned by the Fulton County Board of School Directors in 1947 and 1953, provided that Licking Creek should be a part of the McConnellsburg Joint System. The attendance of Licking Creek's secondary pupils in McConnellsburg on a tuition basis is the first step in this direction. Eighty-four students from the Green Hill High School were given the opportunity to finish their high school educa- tion at McConnellsburg. The tuition rate per pupil-computed from last year's operational costs-is approximately $370 per pupil for this school year. Both school districts are realizing financial advantages by combining their resources for high school purposes, but of far greater importance is the educational upgrading. It made possible a greater and improved range of offerings to meet the needs and abilities of the boys and girls. The school boards of both districts are to be commended for this forward step. To the students of the former Licking Creek Township High School, we extend our warmest welcome in the hope that you will come to love M. H. S. as greatly as we do.
