Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1959 volume:

THE SENIOR CLASS °f McCONNELLSBURG JOINT HIGH SCHOOL presents the NINETEEN FIFTY-NINE EDITION of FLASHLITES Contents ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY SENIORS CLASSES SPORTS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISEMENTS Foreword Mosiac” is a term used to describe work composed of many small pieces. The comparison of an art form with a phase of education may be hackneyed, nonetheless it is accurate. The Flashlites is an attempt to represent the mosiac of our educational experience by presenting some of the tiles.” Incomplete as it is, the Flashlites symbolizes many events with, pictures of a few. May this part of a mosiac bring to mind the larger parts of a pleasurable experience. In Appreciation Miss Geraldine M. Thomas The class of 1959 wishes to pay special tribute to the contri- bution of an inspiring woman whose spirit has long influenced the students of McConnellsburg High School. Miss Thomas’ services were many: advising the Student Flashes Staff, assisting with commencement, directing yearbook production, and giving of herself wherever help was needed. As a teacher, Miss Thomas offered her test by introducing her pupils to the thoughts of man as recorded in literature. This acknowledgment represents any effort to thank a teacher who gave us the challenge of creating a better way of life. Page three President: Levi P. S., Bucknell University To the Class of 1959: High school days for the class of 1959 are now at an end and you stand on the threshold of a new adventure. It has been said that the future belongs to those who are prepared for it. Beyond high school are many opportunities which enable young men and women to achieve success and security, if they possess driving force. Even genius, like humanity, rusts for want of use and it would seem that an honest citizen who thinks for himself is worth for national, local, or individual purposes more than a dozen equally honest citizens who are willing to let others do their thinking for them. May your future be successful because you, with God’s help, have made it so. Page six C. Owen Fries Principal B. S„ Gettysburg College Dedication We, the class of 1959, wish to dedicate our year- book to Mr. C. Owen Fries, our principal and advisor. Throughout our years in high school he has taught us good sportsmanship and the value of co-operation; in guiding us, he has made our school one of which to be proud. Not only has he given us courage to meet today’s world, but he has prepared us to look ahead with deter- mination to succeed. Our appreciation of Mr. Fries’ guidance is best expressed in the hope that many more students may profit through association with him. Page seven Faculty C. B. Chubb Pennsylvania State University B. Page twenty-four Class History Our years at McConnellsburg were busy ones. In addition to the scheduled classes, we enjoyed proms, parties, and picnics. Dramatics and dances kept us busy — both in preparation and presentation. Sales, field trips, and elections added extra fun to the routine of English, History and Math. Without our friends, we were future farmers and future home- makers ... we became skilled in the practical arts, and appreciative of aesthetic beauty. We studied the sciences, learning logical thinking and we developed careful work habits in our business training. School buses and cafeteria lunches were a part of our life, as well as soccer games, assemblies, and class elections. Fourth period study hall, pennants, and hats symbolized our status as Seniors, and with the arrival of graduation pictures and the planning for the New York trip, we knew that we were on our way to graduation. We have passed through an educational experience unique to each of us and very personal in each memory. As we disseminate, may we re- member the companionship and comradeship of our associations in high school. Page twenty-five Our 1959 Edition Class Clowns” Most Flirtatious” Best Looking” • i. We students of the Eighth Grade Class have had a slow start in our fund-raising campaign for the 1958-1959 term. However, we held a bake sale and sold refresh- ments at a baseball game. At Christmas, we decorated our home room, had a party, and exchanged gifts. Finally, as the school year drew to a close, and we looked back, we found that our past was not as dim as it once appeared and our future somewhat rosier. After a somewhat confused start, the Seventh Grade found its place and settled into the routine of our high school. Besides their regular school work, the Seventh Grade enjoyed a Christmas Party prior to the Christmas Vacation. In the Spring, the Seventh Grade journeyed to the Bedford Roller Rink where a good time was had by all. Also in the Spring, a bake sale was held downtown, the profits going into the class treasury. This year has been a very successful one for our Chapter. First, two of our senior members served as area officers, James Snyder as Dele- gate and Robert Weaver as Sentinel, representing the Counties of Bedford, Fulton, and Blair. Another goal was to have all members maintain at least a passing grade in alt subjects. In January, the Chapter attended the State Farm Show at Harrisburg, and toured the Hershey Chocolate Plant at Hershey, Pa. Other plans for the year included the annual Banquet and F. F. A. Week at Penn State University. President Vice-President .. Secretary _ . William Kendall _ Robert Weaver Treasurer ___ Reporter Sentinel _ John Helman Jack Sipes John Bishop Chaplain . - - . . During the year, the Band journeyed to neighboring schools where they performed for the students and also entertained the School Dirctors at their annual convention. Many members participated in the Franklin- Fulton Music Festival which was held in the McConnellsburg Joint High School auditorium, and Dorothy Harris was selected to play Clarinet in the Southern District Band Festival in Lancaster. The high point of the year came at the end of May when the band journeyed to Hershey where they participated in the Pennsylvania Bandmaster’s Annual Con- vention and played in the bandshell at Hershey Park. The aim of our business club is to better understand office practices and business organizations. The club performs the useful service of typing and arranging the school paper. The activities of its first year included the Ice Capades at Hershey, a dance, and the pleasure of touring the campus at Shippensburg State Teachers College on Busi- ness Education Day. This concluded the social calendar of the nine seniors and fifteen junior members. The Girls' Basketball Team of 1958-1959, having lost only two players from last year’s championship team, has done very well again this year. At this date, the team has played only 4 games and has won these. Action picked up as the Kove and Fulton County Leagues started in full swing. Last year our girls won the Fulton County League and tied with Orbisonia for the Kove League title. Their over-all record last year was 10-2-1. The Soccer Team of McConnellsburg Joint High School again completed in the County Soccer League this year. In first half of league play, the team finished in third place with a 3-2 record in the won-lost department and in second place in offensive and defensive statistics. In the second half, our record was 2-2-1 for an overall record of 5-4-1. As last year, two of our games were played under the lights in Chambersburg and this, adding to the enjoyment of play, made it a fairly successful season to the boys. With the graduating class go some of the best athletes of the team: Don Cover, who runs the 440, 220-yard dash and participates with the relay team, Garry Gris- singer, who puts the shot, and Bill Kendall, who runs on the relay team and is a broad jumper. Last year’s (1958) team won all of its meets including the county meet, which is composed of Warfordsburg, Hustontown, Greenhill, and McConnellsburg. Last year's stand-out girls are back again this year. We compete in the following events: 1. 50-yd. dash; 2. 75-yd. dash; 3. Run- ning broad jump; 4. Standing broad jump; 5. High jump; 6.
