While we were occupied with the pursuit of scholastic development, we also enjoyed athletic events, dramatic and musical accomplishments, as well as many other activities. In this edition of FLASHLITES we have attempted to recall many happy experiences of high school life. In appreciation of his friendship for the Class of 1958. Chester A. Creager DEDICATION During our four years of high school, we realize how fortunate we have been in having in Mr. Creager a man of friendly counsel and constant encouragement. He has always been interested in our welfare and tolerant of our inexperience. We hope to prove our- selves worthy of Mr. Creager's instruction. Shearer Supervising Principal B.S. Slippery Rock State Teachers College M.S. Bucknell University Congratulations to the Class of 1958 for having attained an important milestone in life. Graduation from High School could very easily be the beginning of the most important phase of your life. Ralph Waldo Emerson, writing of another disturbed period of history, when America's freedoms were being threatened said, This time like all times is a very good one if we but know what to do with it. The problem of what to do with your lives is one which has suddenly become very real and important. The autumn of 1957, the beginning of your senior year, was normal with the schools of America but then came the intercontinental ballistic missile and the first earth satellite. And now what? One thing is certain. The world will never be the same again. Whatever your vocational choice might be, you will share in the wor1d's most critical period.-How to get along together.-This is indeed a challenge to all young people entering upon the threshold of active citizenship. My sincere hope is that each of you will be able to meet it successfully. C. Owen Fries Principal B.S. Gettysburg College To the Class of 1958: Your four years of high school are a foundation for the years to come. Ahead of you waits a future of opportunity and challenge. You will need strength of character to meet that challenge to the best of your ability. Beside development of character, place loyalty to yourself, your friends, your associates, and you will find The things that count are courage in distress And hope that shines as brightly as a star And vision and humility that bless With God's true plan all living things that are. These are the things that have the deepest worthg These are the most important things on earth. FACULTY C. B. Chubb Pennsylvania State University B.S. M.S. Finlay J. Beginning with September 3 fthe first day of schoolj we were busily engaged in all sorts of activities. On the tenth of October we saw our iirst all-star baseball game of the season. Our soccer season began early in the fall. Graduation pictures were taken in September. What fun we had comparing results when we got the proofs before Christmas! Our first edition of the monthly newspaper was started in October. Oh, yes, and the senior play The Daffy Dills , was quite a hit, but the success of the play was, without doubt, largely due to the fact that such senior talent as: Ruth Sipes, Melvin Strait, Jean Johnston, Larry Cisney, Delores Peck, George Shearer, Nancy Shimer, Larry Chubb, Pearl Abbott, Betty Culler, and Shirley Sipes starred in the production under the direction of Mr. C. B. Chubb. On December 13 a Christmas concert was held in the school auditorium by our school band. Our Christmas vacation began on Dec. 20th and ended Jan. 2, and very soon we were back in school preparing for exams. It just didn't seem possible that we had completed the first semester of our senior year. We still have many thrilling events ahead. Think of the publication of FLASHLITES! How about the banquet when the juniors play host to our class? Then we have had a major part in the Field Meet, Junior-Senior Prom, Band and Choral Concerts, to say nothing of our trip to New York, baccalaureate, and commencement. We can hardly realize that our high school days are almost over. We must make progress by making a way, if we can't iind it. That means we will march forward to the future with confidence and courage. The Senior Class Future Farmers Class Politicians A io? X ' 'ff Sleepiest Quietest Future Secretaries Class Geniuses wang. A. consists of boys in grades nine through twelve who participate in local and state contests. Nine new members will be added to the chapter in February. Since requirements for membership include carrying approved projects, the majority of the members will have completed six to ten projects by the end of their senior year. In competition with project winners throughout the state, the McConnellsburg members have ranked among the upper ten chapters. Field trips to neighboring orchards and farms, the Farm Show, and the annual convention at Penn State completed the year's round of activities. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Blue Devils of M.H.S. under the supervision of a new coach did not quite live up to pre-season expectations. The team, although inexperienced, had the spirit and determination to give the opposition plenty of trouble and keep the games close. As a result, many of the games were won or lost in the final minutes. High scorers for the season were Elwood Doyle, Parker Crouse, Melvin Strait, and Charles Crouse. N, , Vg ,. if W. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Under the supervision of Coach McLaughlin, the Junior Varsity squad was faced with the problem of breaking in a new team. Many of the players were graduates of last year's famous Termites. The three top scorers this season were Larry Ray, Martin Sprenkle, and Leroy Buterbaugh. With a highly successful team of freshmen likely to start as next year's J.V.'s, Mr. McLaughlin should enjoy the satisfaction that comes with coaching a winning team. in-v' KY ,, Ef ,,.,,.- , ,J i ., V. in 1 4 Wi' i QM I qi an V: 1 get '11, JFK ,N an .af Y x . gi gs 6 .. ,Q r N .v,li:,,:- vwcf, MQ. .. . f dx,-f ,Jas M L f A J. t x ,S . . CHEERLEADERS Our cheerleaders lead the student body in organized cheering. Their quick motions and clear voices promote good sportsmanship and add to the excitement of our games. The girls with their vim and vigor do their best to cheer our teams to victory. Each year a captain is chosen by the members of the squad. During the 1957-58 season, Betty Culler was elected to lead the six members representing sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors. The girls hold pep rallies in the auditorium before each game. SOCCER The McConnellsburg soccer team had a successful season this year, winning 5 games, tying 5, and losing 5. The team lost one game with Buchanan but tied the second one with a score of 2 to 2. This was counted as a triumph since the James Buchanan team had remained undefeated for several years. As a result of graduation, the team will lose seven of the starting eleven. These vacancies will be hard to replace, but with practice, the future soccer team will do quite well. BOYS' TRACK Mr. Fries and his track team accepted invitations for the Shippensburg, Somerset, and Berkley Springs Track Meets, and also participated in the annual Fulton County Field Meet. The boys' track team will lose several of their best athletes because of the graduating class of 58,'. This includes Gerald Wible, who did the pole vault and broad jump, Elwood Doyle, who was our best high jumper, Harry Hill, the runner for the 880 yard dash, Carl Gordon, who threw the shot put, and George Morton, the star of the broad jump, high jump, and relay. All these boys received medals and ribbons for their skill in these events. ,Aw 'IRQ' First Row: Joyce Ramsey, Patsy Matthews, Sharon Kendall, Judy Snyder, Ellen Sipes, Guynethia Bard. GIRLS' TRACK The girls' track team of 1958 will compete in several dual meets plus the annual Fulton County Meet. Our girls participate in the 50 yard dash, 75 yard dash, standing broad jump, running broad jump, and a 440 yard relay comprising eight runners on each team. In the 1957 Field Meet, the girls won by a total of 23 points. The girls' team will lose several members from the graduating class, but a number of capable girls are in the ranks willing to fill the vacancies. Hu! If Q 1.37 an mall! The Club is a closed organization in which membership is confined to persons who have won letters for participation on a Varsity team, by acting as manager for a team, or by being a member of the cheerleading squad. The club plans several activities during the school year to raise money to purchase school letters which are awarded to varsity players for their achievements in the school's athletic contests.
