McLaughlin During our four years of high school life, we have had many problems to solve and decisions to make. By teaching 11s sportsmanship and co-operation through his work as coach and class adviser, Mr. McLaughlin has helped us meet each challenge more satisfactorily. His friendliness and interest have won him a place in the hearts of the members of the Senior class. To him we dedicate this edition of the yearbook, hoping we may reflect the kindness which characterizes his leadership. .5oreu ora It seems just a short time since the class of 1956 were Freshmen. Already we are Seniors, recording the scene of our four years in high school. We have enjoyed athletic events, dramatic and musical accomplishments, together with class activities. In this edition of Flashlites, we have attempted to present our record as the means of recalling the happy memories of high school life. A mtmatratimt iFantltg MARLIN A. Other activities of the year were bake sales, a spring square dance, and a skating party for the class members and their guests. Spring, this year as always, was a very busy one for the jolly juniors as they worked together: planning, cooking and serving a banquet in honor of the senior class. They were quite busy, also, as they planned and decorated, preparing for the big night, “The Junior and Senior Prom.” This event was made possible by the class of 1957. McConnellsburg’s team compiled a not too impressive record in the baseball diamond last year. Of the nine games, Coach McLaughlin won one game with St. Thomas and one with Green Hill, losing seven. The team, however, was almost entirely composed of underclassmen, losing only two players through graduation, leaving a veteran team for 1956. There were several players including Ed Culler, Marvin Buterbaugh, Milford Hann, and Dale McQuade who sported fine batting averages and are expected to furnish good stick work in 1956. Ed Culler, a driving type of player, and Phil Carnoehan, a set shot and floor man were the guards. 1 he Blue Devils averaged 55.6 points per game. The team opened this season with seven victories in their first 8 games. Their biggest achievement was a 45—43 overtime score won from Buchanan. From an inexperienced group in November emerged a determined team that displayed the spirit that will in future years carry on the excellent record that the Blue Devils have enjoyed. The team has won five games with the following opponents: Two with Fannett Metal, One each with St. Thomas, Hancock, Buchanan. Membership in the girls basketball team is open to all high school girls interested in athletic activities. However, this year, only two of the members of the varsity six are Seniors. As the majority, the players are freshmen, the girls have had to make up for their lack of height and experience by determination and energy. Although not every game has led to victory, the White Angels have learned leadership and better sportsmanship. QJs' 1st How—N. Pyles, N. Taylor, K. Souders, K. Hill, D. Harr. 2nd Row—Miss Blaker, L. This club is a newlv organized club in McConnellsburg Jt. High School this year. It is now only open to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders due to the short length of time it has to meet and a full quota of members at the present time. Under the supervision of Mrs. Lenore Largent, the members of this club meet every Monday and Tuesday, during the last period and bowl with their respective teams in tournament bowling. This club was organized to enable the girls to obtain a sense of fair play as well as to give them a clear understanding of true sportsmanship. Kay Souders Nancy Taylor Sharon Mellott Dressed in the blue and white uniforms of the band, three highstepping majorettes provide a colorful front for the musicians in parades. Each year the band presents a march number at the Spring Concert featuring a twirling exhibition by the majorettes who also present their routines at each public appearance of the entire organization. They also achieved popularity by the precision with which they execute their intricate twirls. The band rehearses three times per week and is joined by the most advanced students from the Green Hill School, on Thursday evenings. During the school term the band prepares for the Spring Concert and for the various summer activities as this is one of the school organizations that function throughout the entire year. The band presents concerts in the community and also travel to neighboring towns where it has become very popular and is in demand by many organizations. Several of the members have played on District and All-State Bands, also the F. F. A. Band at Harrisburg and Penn State University. Last year Dr. Peter Buys at Hagerstown, Maryland was the guest conductor for our annual concert. He praised the group for their outstanding performance of his own compositions. Several graduates are now playing with their respective College bands and are receiving a great deal of pleasure, as well as valuable experience from their training received in the school band. ? . —jenior a or us 1st Row: Larry Chubb, Carl Gordon, Harry Hill, Melvin Strait, Parker Crouse, Don Chubb, Maynard Gress, Marlin Glee. The aim of this organization is to train the members in ensemble singing. The membership is limited to students in grades nine, ten, eleven, and twelve. The Chorus is divided into two groups. The sopranos, altos, and basses hold weekly rehearsals of an hour each Thursday. The sopranos and altos also rehearse regularly as an independent organization. Each spring the two groups present a concert, in addition to then singing for Assembles and the annual County Institute. They appear in community programs throughout the school year. But can you blame him for not correcting a wrong impression when fifty thousand dollars ($50, XK)) is at stake? You see . . . Bill is a Dr. of Philosophy and a college professor, which means he really can be called Dr. all right. But his financee, Angela has a wealthy, cranky uncle, Henry k. Dodson, who likes medical doctors but is prejudiced against professors. So when Angela brings Bill to meet Uncle Henry at the hospital and introduces him as Dr. Jackson, Uncle Henry thinks he is a surgeon . . . and no one corrects him because he promised to give Angela and Bill $50,000 for the first life Bill saves. From then on, Bill is called upon to help in several humorous emergencies until a patient suddenly developes appendicitis. Other persons who kept the play rolling were Jack, the witty orderly, funny Dovie Finkledink, Puckett, the jolly patients, pretty nurses, personable Bill, and attractive Angela. From start to finish there was never a dull moment in the fast-moving, rib-splitting fun. It is carried on under guidance of Y. M. C. A. Its purpose is best expressed in their pledge: As members of Jr. Hi-Y of the “Young Mens Christian Association”, it is our purpose to strengthen our bodies, develop our minds, worship God, and work together for a finer community, and a better world. The programs are varied! Some of them concern character building, some deal with sportsmanship, and others have to do with entertainment. As an organization based on Christian principles, the Junior Hi-Y Club emphasizes the spiritual side of life. They hold rehearsals once each week during the activity period. a eerfea ilers Our cheerleaders direct the student body in organized cheering and attempt to promote good sportsmanship. With their quick motions and clear voices, they add to the thrill of our games. Each year a captain is chosen by the members of the cheering squad. For the year 1955-56. Nancy Pyles was elected captain. The six members of the squad are in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. The cheer- leaders accompany the teams to their home and away games, trying to cheer them to victory. The girls hold pep rallies in the school auditorium before every home game hoping to get the students to support their teams.
