Heaven opens a magic lane— When all the clouds darken up the skyway, there’s a rainbow highway to be found. Loading from your window pane. To a place behind the sun. Just a step beyond the rain— (Chorus) — Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high. There’ a land that I heard of once in a lullaby. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue. And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true. Someday I’ll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me— When troubles melt like lemon drops. The 69 pas- sengers aboard carried little necessary baggage, some ability, a few brains and much good humor. The first big problem attacked was the selection of class officers: George Reisner, president; Gene Headley, vice president; Terry Bard, secretary; Andy Washahaugh, treasurer. Our outstanding social activity was a St. Patrick’s Day dance. Our practical nature was shown by various methods of raising funds—selling food at games, having a card party and selling chances on a gun. Miss Imogene Beck- er and Mr. Wayne McLaughlin were our advisers. The next year we were transferred to a larger plane, the Sophomore, better equipped for rougher travel. The names of the crew changed somewhat. Nancy Mentzer became president and Esther Warthin vice president, with Gene Headley and George Reisner as secretary and treasurer respectively. Our initiation ceremonies, conducted by the seniors, guaranteed Us second year privileges. Under the direction of our advisers, Mr. Finlay WlMe and Mr. Lyle Duffey, we added to our treasury by selling greeting cards and chances on several articles. 1951 came all too soon and found us aboard the Junior Plane. Under a dif- ferent pilot, Mr. Leroy Hinkle, and new crew members from president to treasurer, we were off to a flying start. John Gordon, Roger Mellott, Peggy Clevenger and Richard Bender were the personnel in charge of the flight. There was little difference in our activities for increasing our treasury. We entertained the faculty and seniors at the annual banquet. The Junior-Senior Prom concluded the events of this leg of our trip. Finally, we found ourselves aboard the senior aircraft. This year has ended in several engagements for the School Band, the Mixed Chorus, the Dancing Club and other organizations. During the last year of flying hours, our plane has climbed to higher altitudes, the way has often been rough, but the view of the skyline has been majestic. As w e flew above the clouds, we learned to appreciate the skill of our old crew members who had helped to pilot our craft on previous flights. By now the passenger list numbered 88. We regretted the transfer of one of our group to a mili- tary training crew. Records have been made in the vocational field, in sports and in dramatics. With the publication of our final record, our yearbook, our annual trip to New York, and a farewell banquet in our honor, each of us is ready to make a solo flight into parts unknown. I 1 FLASH -1953- LITES 1 “THE SKYLINE”—CLASS WILL Ah wo take to the air in tlio Senior Plano, we, the Seniors, being in full pos- session of mind and with memories that put the Encyclopedia Britannica to shame, do leave this last will and testament of the class of 1953: To the SOPHOMORE CLASS, we bequeath our ability to jump to safety when a pilot asked us a question we could not answer; also the right to annoy the Freshmen. To the FRESHMAN CLASS, our unfailing good humor in the face of trying hours we suffered when we rode the Freshman Plane. To the SCHOOL, ail the time that We wasted. May other Classes use It to advantage, and our place in your heart. Take the Juniors in. To several individuals, the following personal bequests; To Homer Lynch, Alan Mellott’s powers of fascination. To Goldie Sebum, Marjorie Lininger’g charm. ¥ To Bruce Harris, Roger Mellott’s ability to spend more money than he has. To Betty Daniels, Martha Culler’s inclination to he kind and thoughtful. To Virgie Doyle, Esther VVarthin’s over-ready wit. To Richard Glee, George Reeder’s ease in using unusual words. As a last bequest, we, of the departing Senior Plane, as we take off from the port of the United Airlines of McConnells burg High School, leave with the Juniors our parachute. We have tried to make one that is sturdy and reliable. W'e bestow this valuable equipment with a word of caution. Do not use it for joy rides, to cover your mistakes, or to show off before the Freshmen, but with care, as a means of safet3' from harm. With this useful property, together with the above-mentioned items, we, the undersigned, do declare this our last will and testament. Given under our hand and seal this 28th day of May, 1953. LASS OF 1953 F LASH i -1953- LITES j ! ____________ .•« 44 SEE 1NG THINGS AT NIGHT’ -CLASS PROPHECY By means of a marvelous new Invention, through the courtesy of the Televis- ion Company of America, the members of the crew anti the passengers can be seen as they will look ten years from now. In this year of aviation, 1968, when the safest means of transportation is to take to the air, Viola Kuykendall is the first woman to have made a solo non-stop flight around the world. At intervals along a new aerial highway are police officers in stationary planes directing traffic- with signal lights. These if leers, called the Skylark Brigade, are former members of the Senior Plane of United Airlines. They are Hubert Hoh- man, Carl Hamman, Harold Bivens, Alan Mellott and Richard Buterbaugh. The winner of the Mrs. America title of 1963, the former Janet Rhodes, was given the honor of christening the latest airliner of the Skyline. Many famous peopl ' were n hand to wish the passengers bon voyage”: Esther Warthin, U. N. Interpreter; Pcgg.V Clevenger of the New York College of Shorthand; Marlin Harr, president ot N. B. C.; Samuel Butcrhaugh, U. S. representative to the General Assembly, and Nancy Humbert, head of the National Educational Association. Before the take-off. Pilot Roger Mellott Introduced Co-Pilots Ed Shaw and George Reeder, with Stewardess Mary Sowers and Navigation Experts David Welsh, Roy Divens and Bob Richards. Marie Selders and Gene Headley, news editors of the New York Times, covered the events. A number oi celebrities were aboard the Skyllner for Its maiden trip. Andy Wasliahaiigh. winner f the Nobel prize for his research work in atomic energy, was presented. Nancy Mentzer, Dean of Women at Columbia University; John Gordon, who just entered Baseball’s Hall of Fame; Shirley Taylor, winner of teacher-of.the- year award; Ruby Rhodes, who starred in American in Paris ; Lois Fix, Metropoli- tan opera star; Richard Bender, designer cf Bender’s Pretzel Bender; Ali ert Shaw, champion American popcorn grower; Elsie Matthews, Broadway's favorite comedi- enne; Lois Wible. TV talent scout—all were in this list of notables. Louise Helman, directress of nurses at the old Airport Medical Center, was chosen to see to the guests’ welfare. Dale Souders and Iceland Clsney were invited to entertain the passengers with their impersonations. Dolores Bivens was taking the trip prior to announcing plans for organizing a baseball team. She hinted that Martha Culler and Marjorie Lininger would In asked to join. Portrait painter, Ronald Cisney, became popular immediately for his sketches of all the people taking the trip.
