Very little has been record- ed in the chronicles of our first eight years, but the last four are fully remembered. That our 'past history might be a guiding star to the future classes, we have endeavored to give you our history as it happened. On September 8, 1941, approximately forty Freshmen entered high school, feeling and acting rather green , but hoping to gain more experience during the next few years. Most of us looked forward with dread and some fear to the initiation which had been prom- ised by the Seniors, but it was finally called off. Our officers for this first year were the following: President, Keith Collingwood, Vice Presi- dent, Reva Snavelyg Secretary, Margaret Peneton, Treasurer, Doris Miller, and Reporter, Alice Coakley. For our mottor we chose Onward Ever, Backward Never , our class colors, red and white, ad our flower, the American Beauty Rose. At the beginning of the year we gained one new member, Marjean Campbell, and later on Alyce Baker came into our class. We held a skating party at the Green Mill in Findlay. Later in the year we enjoyed a weiner roast in McDougle's woods. In May, our first year, which we felt was successful, ended and in September we came back as Sophomores. We lost several members of the class including Doris Foltz, Lucille Fleming, Jack Betz, Don Higbie, and Donna Smalley. We elected Ronald Miller as President, Mildred Walker, Vice President, Sara Kiger, Secretary, Doris Miller, Treasurer, and Margaret Peneton, Reporter. Early in the fall we had a Weiner roast at Doris Miller's and in' March we held a party at Leah Nell Pendleton's. Another class party was held at the school house in April, and a second weiner roast was held at Jody Wasson's. Our activities began in earnest this year. The boys did especially well inathletics, and Jody Wasson and Sara Kiger were elected cheerleaders. These positions were held by the two girls dur- ing their Junior and Senior years also. May and vacation came, and in the fall we chose as our Junior class officers the following: President, Margaret Peneton, Vice President, Dick Moore, Secretary-Treasurer, Alice Coakleyg Reporter, Josephine Wasson, and Historian, Leah Nell Pendleton. We gained one new member, Goldie Hahn, but Ellen Hennings, Maxine George, Genevieve Ba- singer, Marjean Campbell, Ruth Ann Graf, Gene Bovee, Harold Payne, Roy Williams, and Roger Shoop were not able to be back with us. To fill our treasury we gave our class play Almost Summer and with the money we earned we gave the banquet in May for the Seniors. We carried out the Dutch theme. We held a skating party in December and later on we had a party at Leah Nell's, this time having a scavenger hunt. All of us looked forward to coming back to our Senior year, but with the exception of the long vacation we had because of the ice and snow, we were busier than ever with our school work and extra activities. Our officers for this year were: President, Dick Moore, Vice President, Bob Brickmang Secre- tary-Treasurer, Keith Collingwood, Reporter, Wade Rider, and Historian, Jim Rider. We welcomed Gene Bovee back and Earl Newcomer also joined us, but we were sorry to lose Ruth Alice Rader. 1 Early in the fall we held a High School Burn at which we initiated the Freshmen. This year we had several parties, we attended a surprise birthday party for Bill Smith in September, had a hay- ride in October, later on we had a partv at Leah Nell's, and also another birthday party. This time for Wade Rider. Our play Nothing But the Truth , was presented May 4th and was very favorably received. On May 19th the banquet was given by the the Juniors in our honor. On May 20th we listened to our Baccalaureate Sermon-which was very impressive. The crowning event of our four years was our Commencement exercises which were held on May 25th. Supt. H. L. Ford of the Fostoria Schools was our speaker. As we come to the close of our twelve years, we have a sad feeling in taking this departure, but we must keep in mind our motto, Onward Ever, Backward Never! Page fourteen MEMENTO 19-ii Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1945, of McComb High School, hereby will and bequeath the following unforgettable traits, supreme characteristics, and invaluable possessions. 1. To the unworthy Juniors, we leave our home room, front row chapel seats, and discarded chewing gum, Qfound under said seatsj. 2. To the entire school we leave our unsurpassable grades, talents, looks, traits and dignity. Though we realize that they can never come up to the amazing precedent which we have set before them, we give them our best wishes. You, successors, may consider yourselves fortunate, indeed, to continue in the school which we are so triumphantly leaving. 3. To our teachers, we leave our unusual co-operation, love for study, and unlimited ambition in our quest for formal education. Though they can never hope for an intellectual type of class to come along that can equal ours, may they always remember our devotion, which will inspire them to endeavor to teach succeeding classes as they have ours. Earl Newcomer wills his ability to neck with taller girls to Bussie Rader, who. will probably put the talent to use in the future. Mike Miller wills his sarcastic come-backs to Wilma Farthing, to help Wilma in keeping the teachers in their places, as Mike has always done. Wade Rider wills his good nature and carefree manner to the Freshman class to help them through the three long, hard years ahead of them. Bill Smith wills his position in the City Market to Richard Rader as Richard seems interested in that line of work. Naomi Flickinger wills her knack of falling downstairs without breaking any bones to Margaret Leip, who is to use the art for the entertainment of her fellow students. Leah Nell Pendleton wills her habit of always keeping people waiting to Cleola Inbody, with the intention that Cleola will be ready when her date arrives. Bob Brickman wills his ability to be slapped by Miss Walker and still retain his temper to Johnny Patterson. Jim Rider wills his straight A scholastic record to Wayne Gorrell, knowing VVayne has such a good start in that direction. Doris Miller wills her naturally curly hair to Mary King, providing Mary turns all her metal curlers in to the scrap drive. Bob Pickens wills his motor scooter to Mr. Joseph to enable him to keep closer check on his students. Sara Kiger wills her man-chasing tactics to anyone needing them during the present man- shortage. Dick Moore wills his knowledge of secluded parking places to Gerry Harmon and Richard Farthing, providing they study the stars as Dick always did. Keith Collingwood wills his talent as a Romeo to Hollace Basinger, knowing Hollace will put the art to use immediately. Mildred Walker wills her blushes to Gene Miller, to use in those many embarrasing situations in which he finds himself. VVhitcy Tate wills his marvelous knack of arguing to Bob Smith, who is use the art in next year's Civics class. Marcella Rozelle wills her diminutive stature to Dale Sands, so that the teachers will not have to look up to him. Page fifteen MEMENTO 1945 Joyce Brandeberry wills her boy-magnetizing ability to Betty Wilson who is to carry on the torch. Alice Coakley wills her definite dislike of school to Shirley Rider, providing Shirley steers clear of an early marriage. Edith Mitchell wills her ability to ignore men to Betty Snively, who seems to be going in the other direction. R1-va Snavely wills her herd of prize cattle to the school janitors, who are to keep them as pets in the furnace room. Bill Lanker wills his rugged manner of playing football to Howard Shoop, in the hope that Howard will become another Les Horvath. Miller Kersh wills his ability to get the women to Leroy Lovell, who is to use it as an aid in finding the perfect mate. Goldie Hahn wills the handicap of having to be in by 11:00 to Harriet Peneton, so that Harriet may devote more time to formal education. Alyce Baker wills her skill as a cook to Eileen Coakley, so that Eileen may change over to the domestic type. Gene Bovce wills his innocent, boyish look to Burdette Flemming, as Burdette seems to even frighten the teachers with his pugilistic character. Margaret Peneton wills her musical talen to Bob Patterson, knowing that Bob will make 'em swoon, as Sinatra does. Jody Wasson wills her taetful way of getting boy friends to Ruthie Routson, whose method requires too much energy. Betty Rader wills her love of farm life to Mary Lou Basye, providing Mary Lou becomes attached to a tiller of the soil. Jay MeDougle wills his habit of piling up cars without being hurt to Merlin Conrad, as Merlin seems destined to become another Barney Oldfield. Dorothy Haddox wills her rather shy manner toward boys to Joan Brecht, as Joan has a rather wolfish personality. John Matyas wills his scientific ability to Dean Norris. Be another Einstein, Dean. The entire Senior Class wills a, dictionary to Mr. Braden, with the hope he and Webster might get together on the English language. In testimony whereof, we hereunto set our hand and seal, and declare this to be our last Will and Testament, this twenty-fifth day of May, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty five. Signed: The Senior Class of 1945 by Dick Moore Alice Coakley Mr. Joseph was illustrating an effect of static electricity to the Physics class. Leah Nell, he said, what happens to your underskirt when you take your dress off? The question alone was not embarrassing, but quick as a flash, Wade Rider answered, It sticks to her! Now-how did he know? Several of the dignified Senior boys were feeling ornery one day and put water on each other's seats. Their fun was at its peak when Miss Steiner walked in, and, seeing what they were up to quelled them with the following command: You've had your fung now sit in it! Page sixteen MEMENTO 1945 Class Prophecy Here it is, 1965, and I, Snoop Scoop Pendleton, am bringing to you the twentieth annual re- port on the doings of my classmates of the year 1945. Through my inquisitive efforts, I have gathered together the following information. I shall vouch for the authenticity of the statements. Mildred VValker is now mourning the loss of her husband. After three weeks of married life, he died of her cooking. Mildred says it served him right. She told him that she wanted a maid. Keith Collingwood, with his ninety per cent average of raising ton litters, is now running com- petition with the world's champion hog raiser. All admire his great ability, and he deserves much credit, even though he did stretch the truth slightly in his records. Assisting Keith with his hog raising is the former Goldie Hahn. She has proved herself a dandy farm hand. Sara Kiger suffered a nervous breakdown early in life trying to be true to all her Army and Navy boy-friends. After a long fight to regain her health, Sara is now an old maid at thirty-eight, but prefers to call herself an unclaimed blessing. Rooming with Sara is the girl we all knew as Jody Wasson. Josephine burped while eating her wedding cake and scared her newly-won hus- band away. She's never seen him since. Johnny Matyas, the electrical wizard, has invented a new addition to television, called Smelle- vision . Because of his invention, millions may now have the aroma of far-away things brought to their very noses. Ronald Miller now claims to have the largest harem in the world. He never could decide which girl he wanted, so he moved to Arabia where he could have them all. On the night of his graduation, Earl Newcomer mysteriously started to grow, and is now feat- ured with Ringling Brothers as the tallest man in the world. Also featured in the same show is Marcella Rozelle, the world's greatest tight-rope walker. Marcella has perfected the feat of walk- ing upside-down on the wire. Says she, It's really very simple if you know how. One of the few lady truck drivers in the United States, Dorothy Haddox now drives a semi from San Francisco to New York. Dorothy is reputed to be one of the best lady drivers in the world. She seldom hits more than two pedestrians a week. B'llL ' li 1 anker was so inspired by a certain Cadtt lwavy Nurse from Columbus, that after his career in the Navy, he entered into the study of medicine. He is now associated with the Mayo Clinic. Bill Smith, after searching the better part of six continents for an ideal mate, is now in the wilds of Africa-still serarching. Bob Briekman was spotted for his athletic ability soon after school was out. Among his many laurels is an offer from the famous movie actress, Joan Davis, to play opposite her in Brickman Scores Again . Bricky wanted Shirley Temple to play the role, but found that her time was all occupied. After successfully starring in several Burlesque theaters, Dick Moore is going on with his dra- matic ability. He hints that his next production, Rough Lovew, will be opposite Gravel Gcrtie. Wade Rider has combined semi-truck driving with poetry writing. He recites his poetry to every waitress along the route, and, though rather old, is still the most ambitious wolf in America. Running close competition to Fred Astaire is VVhitey Tate, rcputedly one of the world's best jitterburgs. He has won many awards in world-wide competntion, and attributes his success to Ray's Dance Studio. To satisfy his curiosity about what the inside of the earth is like, Bob Pickens started to dig a hole to China. After fifteen years of digging, it got too hot for his and he was forced to quit. Pickens' Folly has netted him a fortune, however, since he hit upon the bright idea of charg- ing admission to the hordes of people who came to laugh at him. Miller Kersh has fulfilled his childhood ambition by becoming Shirley Temple's sixth husband. At the moment, however, it is rumored that Shirley is headed for Reno. Her reason-Kersh was seen with other women. Page seventeen MEMENTO 19-F5 Since Betty Rader has become manager of Shady Acres Golf Cocrse, there has been an ap- palling number of applicants for caddy jobs. All the men want Betty to teach them the game of golf. Paul Spitsnaugle, who, while still in High School, made up his mind to remain a bachelor, has succeeded Edgar Bergen as the most famous ventriliquist of his time. As fate would have it-, Paul fell in love, and though he was too bashful to do his own proposing, he had Oscar, his dummy, pro- pose for him. His wife is the former Edith Mitchell. Edith claims Paul can hold her on his knee just as well as he does any of his dummies. Jay Mcllougle is now a barker with the Woo-Woo Girlie Show. Jay says he really has some- thing to shout about. Something is a red-head, the star of the show. Naomi Fliekinger, who always aspircd to be a model, is now posing for Varga. She hastens to state that she always wears a bathing suit while modeling. Since Naomi has been on the job, how- ever, Esquire readers have noticed a definite decline in the curvaciousness of the Varga girls. They are beginning to complain. One of Vargafs closest rivals is Borga, the former Alice Coakley. Alice studied art while her husband was in the army, and, when he returned she was drawing a sizeable salary. While Alice toils over her drawings, Bill now takes life easy. Jim Rider, hoping to gain fame by being the first man to land on the moon, took off from earth on a warm June night in 1960. Jim, however, was greatly disappointed, for when he landed his space ship he found Alyee Baker and her new husband there on their honeymoon. Alyce and the Mr. wanted to be alone . Margaret Peneton is now the star vocalist of her husband's famous orchestra. Despite her singing career, she has found time to raise a family of ten. After being disappointed in love, Gene Bovee left McComb for distant places. He is now an Eskimo in the Far North and whenever a woman comes within a mile of him, he hibernates with his pet polar bear. When her herd of Shorthorns grew too large for her farm, Reva Snavely moved to Texas. There she met her husband, a real-life cowboy. She now raises Longhorns and children- Doing her best to carry on the ideals of an All-American Farmer, who was her inspiration dur- ing most of her High School years, is Doris Miller. She has proved herself a real tiller of the soil. Joyce Brandeberry is still cp to her old tricks. After a hard fight to gain fame, Joyce is now the premiere danseuse of her own show, currently appearing at the Capitol. And so ends the twentieth annual report on the Class of nineteen forty-five, compiled by my own untiring efforts to find and report gossip when it happens or beforeg and I remain your hard- working correspondent, Snoop-Scoop Pendleton, who modestly lays claim to the distinction of being the greatest rcpprter of all time. Mr. Braden was giving one of his famous UID tests in Speech and the class as a whole looked usually blank. Finally Mike Miller spoke up: Mr. Braden, he said, I don't believe that we've studied the material that you're giving us a test over. Oh, everything is right in the book, Mr. Braden laughed fiendishly. Yes, retorted Mike, but you make us keep our books closed! Howard Peneton was pacing the street at 3 o'clock one May morning when Two Gun Laney strolled by. Two Gun : What in the world are you doing out here at this time of the morning? Howard: Well, I forgot my key and I'm waiting for Margaret to come home to let me in. Page eighteen MEMENTO 1 945 Classes of 1943 and 1944 Bovause of c-ertain diffimzliic-s, the vlasses of 1943 and 1944 were unable to publish an annual. The Navy took one of our class nieinbers, Charles Miller. Mr. Braden was eleeted to be our advisor in this, our seeond year. Riehard Rader, president: Eddie Posner, viee presidentg .lohn Dishong, secretary-treasurer, and Leanna Mereer, reporter, are the offieials this year. Haek again with us is Parlee Bovee after being' in Findlay for a year. lileanore Sparrowe started this year with us dlld in February, LeRoy Lovell from Mt. Cory joined our elass. Leanna Mereer left during' the first semester to live near Rudolph, and we lost Charles Fisher and Vtalter liatta. Activities this year have been liniited to a very successful Hghostll party given by Cleola ln- hody at her house on Hallowe'en. In November we seleeted and ordered our class rings. lVe deeided upon our motto- Strive not to equal but to exeellng for the elass flower we seleeted the earnation and the eolors, red and white, will represent us. Most of our boys entered into the sports offered by the sehool and we have some very proin- ising football and basketball players. Pa ge flA!C1lfj f'lUL' N1I1M1iN'I11 1945 Freshman Class I 41. I . 'l'lie 10-14 Football season may well be termed a sueeessful one-both in number of ,E,'kllll0S won and in the spirit, eo-operation, and teamwork displayed by the boys. Under the leadership of the new f'0ill'll, Mr. liraden, the squad soon learned at opening praetiee that to produee a good football team one must work and train hard. Even a hot Labor Day found the boys sweating out a long praetiee instead of enjoying a swim or aqound of golf. They also found that there was plenty oi' eompetition l'or any position on the first eleven. With but one thing in mind-the County Championship-Meflonib started off by taking' Arling- ton, under the lights, by the seore of 27-01 then Rawson, 53-03 next Areadia, l2-7, and then really proved their worth by downing unbeaten Van Buren 19-12. The Panthers reeeived their bad break twt-'ll not state the eireuinstanees herej and lost all hopes of the ehampionship by going down to Mt. Blanehard. Although ltletfoinb led at the half 6-0, Blanchard eashed in on our bad break and took ns 21-6. Still dazed by the setback, the Panthers were handed a 14-0 defeat at the hands ot' Liberty, after whieh they trounc-ed Mt. Cory to the tune of 19-0. Vanlue elosed the season by swim- ming' to a 6-0 deeision in a field of mud. This year's team will not be easily forgotten, nor the manner in whieh it played-yes, the hard- est eharging line and the fastest baekfield in the county. Bob Briekman and Diek Moore were eleeted eo-captains at the end of the year. The following boys will be lost by ,grI'aduation: Bob Briekman, Diek Moore, Bill Lanker, Mike Miller, Loyal Tate, Bill Smith, Keith Collingwood, .lay Mcllougle, and Paul Spitsnaugxle. Those too numerous to mention will be lost to the draft. lndieutes letterlnen.
