It has been a tough year for the staff, but for all those who cooperated and helped the staff, it sure did make a difference. There have been other schools whose yearbook has fallen and I knew I couldn't let this happen to the Wrangler, but due to Mrs. Alva Ibarra and the staff for hanging together, the major problems were conquered. To my fellow graduates, this marks the 20th Anniversary for McCollum High. I hope you cherish and keep this book in memory just like I will. We the McCollum graduates of '83 have invested much time, faith, and love into our school, and ask that everyone else please treat it with respect just as we did. This year was a very exciting and very spirited. Thats why we had the motto Proud to be Seniors of 83 . We all knew we had a big day this year, which was Friday, May 27, 1983. Cheers of freedom were being expressed along with tears of happiness. Hugs and kisses were exchanged with wishes of luck and joy. Paces looked upward. This was a night to remember. This was a cowboy graduation. I would like to thank everyone who helped me throughout the year, mainly Mrs. Alva Ibarra for without her many things would have been impossible, I would like to congratulate jimmy Garcia on his well-deserved position and wish him, and all my other friends the best of luck with their yearbook. Also I would like to wish all my fellow graduates the very best of luck. May God bless you all and keep you in His tender care. Qoilclcoal Nalin Qtr. Carlos Ninojr. AQ ,A-sf Student Life The life of a cowboy can sometimes be frustrating, but not always. The hassels of schoolwork and homework are forgotten for just 45 minutes while students en- joy each others company and entertainment that is sometimes provided during lunch. Competition between classes is important, although togetherness is the main reason McCollum is 1541. Students often show off their many talents and personalities on days of special events. In spite of all the bad, students will always remember the good times which they will cherish forever, the friends and teachers they will miss as another year ends, but they look forward to a pro- sperous summer. One that the majority of the students participated in was the Night Pep Rally. Everyone had a chance to get in on the act-from being an M.H.S. cheerleader in the drag , dancing in the co-ed senior dance-team, or becoming a Pillow Person ! Even Mrs. Dillard McCollum attended to join in the festivities. The junior Class won the Spirit Poster and the Senior Class let their spirit show by winning the Spirit Yell. 14 Cowbo s Ride Into the Christmas Season Better hold on to this pillow , says Santa Ray Cortez. Next to Spirit week, Christmas was the most special season of the year. Several events took place to help those in need. But an event that took place during the lunch hour was the students taking pictures with Santa Claus, The senior boys who took part as Santas were Marcus Lozano, Samueljohnson, Rene Benevides, Mario Perez and Ray Cortez. Team spirit was not demoralized by this record however which they prov- ed in their final outing against Harlandale. The Cowboys 29-27 vic- tory over the Indians was one of the most exciting games ever played between the two teams, and will without a doubt be talked about for years to come. This spirit was present not only during the Harlandale game, but in every game the cowboys played. It is with this spirit that will lead future cowboy teams on to victory not only onthe game field but in the field oflife. 22 Rudy Ortega puts a point on the board Mike Villanueva scores six. After all the long, hot and tiring practices the girls had, it was worth it. They started out with a 3-5 record in non-district. They came out winners with a 10-2 record in district and participated in several tournaments with a record of 4-6. With the bi-district title the Cowgirls were determined to give it their best with everyone behind them. The Cowgirls did their best but lost. They weren't losers because they make the student body very proud of them. They finished with a season of 17-14. 24 Cowgirls say their prayers. Cheryl Diver dunks the ball. Carlos Alvarado is determined to score for the Cowboys. 1982-83 was a year of rise and fall for the Cowboys. Entered in three tournaments, the Cowboys took three straight losses in the Consolation Championship. When district rolled around, Coach Dennis Smith was sure he had a winning combination. What he didn't know was that one of his starters was about to leave the team. The loss of that senior leadership and the scor- ing was a determining factor in district games. With a great lack of height and experience the Cowboys finished fifth in district in front of rivals, the South San Bobcats and the Harlandale In- dians. Out of three meetings between the Cowboys and Indians, the Cowboys came out on top. With four returning starters and three other lettermen coming back, 83-84 should be the winning season to bring back the good tradition of McCollum athletics. This year two Cowboys received district honors. Alex Huizar a 6'1 junior starter received All-District Honorable Mention. The twelfth leading scorer in the district, he was a powerful force, mainly due to his great jumping ability. The other honored Cowboy was a 5'11 senior guard named Oscar Sepulveda. O was the sixth leading scorer in the district and was named to the All-District first team. Both of these young men gave us all exciting moments and kept the winning at- titude. Senior lettermen, Rod Salinas, jonathon Higgins, james Cannon, Oscar Sepulveda, Edward Solano, juan Campos, jeff DeVille, and Coach Smith wish next year's varsity good luck.
