Drum Major Has Full Time Job The McCollum Cowboy Varsity Band starts taking shape in early August when marching practice be- gins. Members then get to cool off from their daily evening workout at the annual swimming party held at the Paton Heights pool. From the beginning of Septem- ber to late November, the band learns and practices various halftime shows which prepares them for University Interscholastic League Marching Contest on November 13. This year the band made a first di- vision in both m a r ching and inspection. Individual band members entered U.I.L. Solo and Ensemble Contest in which 66 first place medals were won. On March 20, the group went to U.I.L. Concert Contest and made second divisions in playing and in sight reading. This year the band was a ufeature band at the Battle ofthe Bands. They marched in the Battle of Flow- ers parade and this year, for the first time, they also marched in the Fiesta Flambeau parade. The band's main function is its participation in football halftime entertainment and its help in en- couraging spirit at pep rallys. In addition to its many other activities, the band plays for R.O.T.C. at various times throughout the year.
