+ Cowboys Lose District McCollum's baseball team lost ' their big chance to win the district title to Sam Houston 5-1. The Cowboys led the district most of the season and finished with a 5-3 district record and a 14-8 record for the year. The Cowpokes started the district season with a 3-0 win over South San and then beat Edison before the Cherokees handed them their first setback. They then came back to beat Harlandale 4-1, then lost a big game to South San. After the second district loss, McCollum ' l 1 beat the Indians again 9-O and Edison 4-1 before the big show- f down came with Sam Houston. 1 Gary McCulloch, senior first baseman. But the Cherokees came right back in the bottom half of the first to jump out in front 2-1. The score remained 2-1 until Sam Houston scored 2 more runs in the third inning and a single run in the fourth. Big Leroy Thomas held the Cowboys Qin check with a three hitter while Bruce Divin and Jimmy Shuler gave the Cherokees seven hits. Senior Randy Lockwood, who set five different records this season, got two of the Cowpokes three hits. Lockwood set these records: most stolen bases in a game, most stolen bases in a three year career, most hits in a season, highest batting average in district play 1.5631 highest average in a Bruce Vetters, junior pitcher.
