Reed Junior English is the last English course that a high school student is required to take. Because it is a terminal English course for many students, it is one of the most important courses in the high school curriculum. The study of composition and grammar is ex- tremely important in the junior year of English. Sophomore English continues the development of the two basic skills of English, reading and writ- ing. The course impresses upon students the importance of being able to communicate effectively and helps students gain an apprecia- tion of all types of literature. Dur- ing this second year of,English, students are introduced to the writ- ings of William Shakespeare and read their first long novel. English Il helps students to gain a better understanding of the technical side of the English language. Freshman English emphasizes the mastery of the skills learned during the earlier years of school. Through the use of these skills, the student learns to speak and write more clearly, more maturely, and with more variety.
