Parnell Directs Musicians Mr. John Parnell, director of the Cowboy Band, first became in- terested in being a band director in the ninth grade. After graduation from high school, with this interest still in mind, Mr. Parnell attended North Texas State University. There he received his Bachelor of Music and his Master's of Educa- tion degrees. Mr. Parnell's first job as a band director was in DeQueen, Arkansas where he taught for four years. He then came to McCollum and The Cowboy Band. Annette Martin Leads Band For the fifth consecutive year the Cowboy Band of McCollum High School is under the direction of Mr. John Parnell. To get band members in shape, the musicians, year begins in early August with practice sessions every evening and a kick-off swimming party at Pat- ton Heights Swimming Pool. From September to late November the band is seen practicing everyday in preparation for the football half- time show. On November 13 the band par- ticipated in the University Inter- scholastic League Marching Contest held at North East Stadium. The group received a first division rating for the half-time show they pre- sented and a first division for inspection. Each year the band enters the U.I.L. Solo and En- semble Contest. Major event of the year was par- ticipation inthe Greatest Bands In Dixieu held in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Band members started working in early December to raise money for this trip. In preparation they were seen once again marching around the schoolto get in shape for the big parade. February 16 the Cowboy Band marched proudly down Canal Street in New Orleans, knowing they were the only band to participate in the parade from Texas. There were twenty bands participat- ing in the contest parade and the Cowboy Band came home with ninth place. l Drum Major Annette Martin's activities in the Cowboy Band are varied. During football season Annette helps Mr. Parnell with the weekly half-time shows to be presented at the McCollum football games. In November she leads the band in the U.I.L. Marching Contest. During Fiesta Week Annette helps prepare the band for the Battle of the Bands and The Battle of the Flowers Parade.
