Senior Class Officers JANET MCCLURE, Vice Pres.g Carlyn Behnfeldt, Sec., Robert Armstrong, Pres., Marlene Johnson, Treas., Mary Lou Gustwiller, News Rep.. 12 Class Histor Aftera long, long journey we are all looking forward to our Graduation Day, but first let us take a look over the past twelve years. It was in the fall of 1943 that 23 excited little children entered the doors of Ml-lS for the beginning of their school career. We were welcomed and guided through our first year by Mrs. Raubenolt. We soon left Mrs. Raubenolt behind. and for the next year Miss Speiss guided us. For our third year Mrs. Neiderhiser served as our guide. Our fourth year we were under the careful guidance of Mrs. Rudolph. Much to our regret, our class was divided the fifth year. Part of us were under the instruction of Mrs. Helen Rudolph and the others ha d Mrs. Mowery as their teacher. As we came to school the first day of our seventh year, we were quite excited, because we were to be on the same floor as our upperclassmen. During the seventh and eighth years, our te a c he r was Mrs. Bokerman. We were very happy when we finished our eighth year, because that meant high school for us. On aglorious day in the month of Sept. of the year 1951, 1 I Freshman slowly wended their way to the school building wondering as they went, what high school life would be like. On Oct. 5, the Sophomor es gave us the annual initiation. We elected'the following for class officers: Pres. -- Donald Clarkeg Vice Pres. --Ca rlyn Behn - feldtg Sec'y -- Bonnie Beavers, Treas. -- Marlene Johnson, News Rep. --Janet McClure, and Mr. Giaque for our sponsor. Thus did the nine months roll away and we were Freshies no more. We were away for a short vacation and back again the following autumn with 14 members. We were knowing Sophomores g now, nothing worried us, for a little pride hadtaken the place of fear. Again, we elected class officers: Pres. --Bob Armstrongg Vice Pres. --Jim Ashbaugh, Sec'y and Treas. --Carlyn Behnfeldtg News Rep. --Marlene Johnson a nd class sponsor -- Mr. Zurlo. In October we gave the Freshmen the annual initiation party and inireturn they gave us a very nice party. To help our class funds, we had bake sales and scrap iron drives. The summer gone, 12 jolly Juniors returne d to take up their work with increased vigor. Again we thought we needed class leaders, so we elected the following for our officers: Pres. -- Bob Blair, Sec'y and Treas. -- Carlyn Behnfeldtg News Rep. --Connie Popeg and Sponsor -- Miss Hatcher. We also chose our class flower, red roseg class colors, maroon and white, and our class motto: Finishedg Yet Beginning . During the yea r one member dropped out, leaving us with eleven members for the remainder of the year. One day at the very beginning of the year,we were quite excited because ou r symbol of unity, the class rings, had arrived. Of course, we were quite proud as everybody said, My how pretty they are! During the year we sold refreshments at the basketball games to help our class funds. In April, after many hours of practice, we gave our first play, Beane From Lima , which was very successful. On May 14 we gave the Seniors a Junior - Senior Banquet and Prom, which met all expectations. Eleven grand old seniors came back to the dear ole M,H,S. to finish their last year. As our officers, we elected: Pres. -- Bob Armstrong, Vice Pres. --Janet McClure, Sec'y -- Carlyn Behfeldtg Treas. -- Marlene Jo h n so n , N e w s Rep. -- Mary Gustwillerg and Sponsor -- Mr. Kerwin. We starred our year by choosing the staff for our school paper, Indian Legends . We also started work on the yearbook McClurean . On November 5 we presented our class play, Miss Mischief. We are looking forward to Baccalaureate, May 15, and Commencement, May 20. Our class is planning a trip to New York City and Washington, D.C. We think it willbe one of the most memorable highlights of our school career. To allthe teachers and others behind the scenes,we wish to thank them sincerely for having made it possible for us to receive our education. With our motto, Finishedg Yet Beginning , we shall pass all the problems that lie in the way of true happiness and reach our ideals. Maxine Shufelt 13 Class Will We, the members of the class of 55 , will to the teachers the following: We, the Seniors, will to Mr. Neiderhiser, our ability to have our speech books with us, so we won't interrupt his History class. We, the Senior boys, will to Mr. Minnich, a Physics class that will be serious instead of humorous. We, the Senior girls, will to Mrs. McClure, a class that will not always want a cup of tea. We, the members of the Class of 55 , will to the other classes the following: We, the Seniors, will to the Junior boys, our ability not to run fromsthe girls. We, the Seniors, will to the Junior girls, our ability not to chase after the boys, but to leave boys chase after them. Class Prophecy After fifteen years, the senior class of '55 of McClure High School finally got together and had a class reunion. As I entered the door, I became doubtful that I would meet anyone whom I would recognize. But luck was with me, for Ihad not walked very far before I encountered an attractive woman whom Irecogniz- zed immediately as Marlene Johnson. While talking to her, I learned she is now happily married to Jim Graf, and they have four wonderful children. As we continued talking a bou t the many happy memories we have had in our school days, a very distinguished looking man came to us and started talking. Why, it's Jim Ashbaugh , th e re c e nt Do n K e lly , the world - wide famous Jitterbugerl l-le flew out here from Hollywood, California, a nd is now making pictures with Marilyn Monroe. M.G.M. has voted him as the Great Lover of the Movie Screen As I continued my tour through the large crowd, I heard a loud commotion, and moving near to investigate, I caught sight of Connie Pope talking to a group of people. Asleavesdropped, I heard her telling about the latest i n hair styles. She was demonstrating on Janet McClure, her last name is Kerwin now, naturally. She and Rog have the most beautiful home just outside McClure, Ohio. Oh yes, Connie has just returned from Paris. She has been making a study on the recent hair styles in Europe. I wa nd e re d around and found myself staring a t a nice -looking lady sitting over there on the sofa. Why, it's Maxine Shufelt! She is telling me she's head of the Nurses Training Staff ata hospital in San Francisco, California. Remember how bashful Vivian Lanzer was in high school? Well, she has changed quite alot. She is head ofa well - known literary society in New York City. As I stood there debating whether that was Mary Gustwiller, a tall man came to me and introduced himself as Dick Pollom, He is still as Yummy as he used to be in high school. He told me he has taken up the study of ministry and is head of the Council of Churches in Munick, Germany. l-le is not married yet, but he says he hopes to be in the near future when the right one comes along. Dick told me that Mary Gustwiller was standing across the room with her five children fall boysj. And she is living with her husband on a farm west of Napoleon. I left Dick and rushed over to Bob Armstrong , who is in an Army uniform. He said he was in the engineering field and is making a career of the Army. Over there is Robert Blair. And brother is he ever dressed upl He just came from Wa shington , D. C . and is running for President of the United States. He has a fairly good chance of winning. fl-le claimsj. Having accounted for the entire class of '55, I must return to my home in Miami, Florida. I am so inspired by the renewal of pleasant memories that I am going to have the most e njoya ble trip home, where I will continue my elementary teaching. Aft- er dropping the opening game to Ridgeville, the fighting Injuns upset Malinta- Grelton in as thrilling a ball game as you will ever want to see. It was an over- time contest won by McClure 54-52. Our team then came back to clip Florida, and then scored the tourney's biggest upset by beating Ridgeville, the league champs, witha score of 62-53. The consolation game held at Ridgeville was lost to Hamler in another thrilling game 53-52. McClure started the season with only one letterman from the 53-54 squad-- Senior Jim Ashbaugh, who scored 413 points. Jimmy broke the school's in- dividual scoring record with a 44 point outburst against Tontogany. McClure broke the team scoring record the same night collecting 91 points. On Decem- ber 3, 1954, McClure smashed all existing Henry County League records by swishing the nets with 38 out of a possible 42 free throws. The varsity team was made up of two Seniors, four Juniors, two Sophomores, and three Freshmen. Thus the prospects for 1955-56 look a little better than usual. The McClureSenior and Junior Bands were quite active during the past year. The Junior Band participated in the following activities: The Christmas Program, and the Community Institute. The Junior Band was a happy group when they were informed that they were to be put on the air over station WRFD, Worthington on the Mary Lou Program in January. The Senior Band participated in some parades during the summer. One of these was at Grand Rapids in which the band took first honors. The Halloween Parade at Defiance included the McClure Band for the first time. During the basketball season, the band again put on band shows which were greatly enjoyed by the spectators. These shows included precision marching, a Snow-White show, and a patriotic theme. Ath the patriotic show, lights were used for the first time which turned out to be veryimpressive. Janet McClure was head majorette at these shows. The McClure band played threef 3 J times over station WONW, Defiance. Last Year, the band participated in the District Music Contest at Bryan. The Band received a first division Q I y rating, therefore qualifying for the state event. At State, the band received twof 2 j first division ratings, fone in sight readingj plus two Q 2 J second division ratings, giving a final rating of two f 2 1. It is hoped that this year the band can equal or better last year's wonderful showing.
