And with her the Being Beauteous, Who into her youth was given, More than all things else to love her, And is now o saint in heaven. fBy Henry W. We have tried to give you in an enduring form the history of our past year's events and their participants. It has been our desire and hope that we can give to you an accurate record of the academic and social events that happen behind those doors of M. H. S. Have we accomplished our purpose? . . . You decide. . . . Editor-in-Chief l DEDICATION To The Little Lady With The Smile l lVlrs. G. W. Turner l Our Librarian We, the Senior Class, take great pleasure in dedicating our annual, The McClurean, to Mrs. Turner. Alice Leona Koon was born on December 12, 1878 in Darke County, Greenville, Ohio. There is a very interesting story about Miss Koon, at the time of her birth. Miss Koon's cous- in, who was very small, came to view the new baby. Miss Koon's parents told her that the baby's name was Alice Leona. When she reached home, she told her parents that the baby's name was Allie Bolognie. That name stayed with Miss Koon! Her relatives do not let her forget her nickname. Miss Koon was united in marriage to Mr. George Turner on November 29, 1897 in Piqua, Ohio. They are the proud parents of four children, which are three boys and one girl. Mrs. Turner has worked in our library for eight years. We boys and girls have gone to the library at different times feeling mighty low, but Mrs. Turner always made us happy be- fore we left. In her spare time she likes to read books, that enables her to help us pick out the books best suited to our need. We the Senior Class are going to miss our friendly chats with Mrs. Turner! We real- ize that many a time we have gone to the library without permission, but somehow Mrs. Turner always understood. We are very proud of you, Mrs. Turner, and we would like to dedicate this, our year book, to you! A Person Worth Knowing We, the class of 1950, wish to thank Mr. Neiderhiser, our superintendent, for all the assistance he has given us in the past years. fContinued on Page 523 Our Ideal Man We citizens of Henry County are very fortunate to have as our County Superintendent of Schools, an ideal man. He is Mr. M. E. Brandon. fContinued on Page 53l The Men Behind The School We are very fortunate to have such competent men as Mr. B. E. Snider, Mr. Ernest Behnfeldt, Mr. Chancey Connolly, Jr., Mr. Verne Rudolph, and Mr. Carl Rowland for our McClure Board of Education. What's 2 -1- 2? Did you say 4? Thank you, Teacher! Yes, that's a very, very small example of the great work our teachers are doing for the future parents and citizens of the world! They not only teach the basic courses such as reading, writing, arithmetic, Eng- lish, and history, but they teach their pupils how to be courteous, get along with one an- other, be happy, and become better educated. The students then try to follow the example their teachers set before them. Our school can boast the fact that we have the best teachers! Each teacher spends lots of time and energy so that his or her pupils can become better students, socially and aca- demically. Our teachers are of the most competent type. They take an active interest in all community affairs. We do not seem to realize that these teachers are busy people trying to help their pupils, give advice to parents as to little Johnny's arithmetic difficulties, en- courage backward students, perform in community and church activities, as well as school functions. A teacher's job is never done! Little credit do we give to these most worthy peo- ple-our teachers! MRS. SHEPARD -teaches arithmetic and reading to make first grade minds tick. MRS. NEIDERHISER uses thought For pupils who must be rightly taught. With the help of MRS. HERSHISER The fourth and fifth became much wiser. The fifth grade and sixth grade did soon find That MRS. RUDOLPH was very kind. MRS. BOKERMAN taught Junior Hi. So in intelligence they were high. Under MRS. HARMON take shorthand And a good iob you are sure to land. Learn to cook under MRS. McCLURE And a handsome husband you'll lure. Take singing lessons under MISS SMITH And that Van Johnson you'll be with. St. Louis Browns can boast Ned Garver But McClure brags of COACH CARVER. English is a regular catcher But it is well taught by MISS HATCHER. The man to whom everyone yells, Hi, Sir! ls well known MR. NEIDERHISER. -if 9 ' Q 0' ' ,V 16 1 ,v I fl f N di! E ! i 4 .- if L, Seniors The Ropes Of The Past After a long, long journey, we are all looking forward to our Graduation Day, but first let us take a look over the past twelve years. lt was in the fall of 'I939 that twenty-three excited little children entered the doors of M.H.S. for the beginning of their school career. We were welcomed and guided through our first year by Miss lrene Bruns. We soon left Miss Bruns behind and for the next two years Miss Evelyn Perry served as our guide and help- ing hand . Our fourth year we were under the careful guidance of Miss Margaret Welsh and Betty Sockman. Much to our regret, our class was divided the fifth year. Part of us were under the instruction of Mrs. Gladys Knight and the others were under Mrs. Helen Travis. As sixth graders we were all together again with Mrs. Helen Travis as our teacher. As we came to school the first day of our seventh year, we were quite excited because we were to be on the same floor as our upperclassmen. During our seventh and eighth years our instructors were: Mrs. Arlie Bokerman, Miss Woodward, Miss Spiess, and Mrs. McClure. Our number increased from twenty-three to twenty-seven members from our first to our eighth year. Although we enioyed our first eight years and we are very grateful to our teachers for all they did for us, we were very happy when we finished our eighth year, because that meant high school for us. On a glorious day in the month of September of the year 1946, thirty-five Freshmen slowly wended their way to the schoolbuilding, wondering as they went, what high school life would be like, whether they would enioy it, and if the studies would be so very, very hard. We soon learned that we were not considered anything but greenies until we were initiated into the role of Freshman. On October fourth, the sophomores gave us the annual initiation. After we were initiated we decided the proper thing to do would be to organize our class, so we elected as our leaders the following: President, George Kryder, Secretary, LaVonda Reimund, Treasurer, Tommy Good, and Advisor, Mr. Rotsel. On October thirtieth, we gave the Sophomores a party in return for the initiation. Many of our boys began their basketball training and played on the reserve team. One of our classmates played on the varsity team throughout the year. We were all very prominent in such activities as F.F.A., F.H.A., Latin Club, Glee Clubs and others. Thus did the nine months roll away and we were 'Freshies no more. We were away for a short vacation and back again the following Autumn with thirty- two of our same members, but possibly with different points of view. We were knowing Sophomores now, nothing worried us for a little pride had taken the place of fear. Again, we elected class officers. LaVonda Reimund was elected our class president, Lavonda Overy. Vice President, George Kryder, Secretary, Tommy Good, Treasurer, Donna Shaffer, News Re- porter, Marilyn Neiderhiser, Historian, and Mrs. McClure, Advisor. In October we gave the Freshmen the annual initiation party, and in return they entertained us with a sleigh ride party in December. During our Sophomore year we sponsored a program put on by Wilbur Fish, the Bell Ringer, in order to increase our class funds. We were glad for return of a music program at M.H.S. A few of us received the honor of singing in the County Music Festival. We, again, were well represented in the school curriculum. You could find some of us on the baseball field, on the basketball floor, as cheerleaders, or in such organiza- tions as F.H.A., F.F.A., Latin Club, etc. The summer gone, thirty iolly Juniors returned to take up their work with increased vigor. More difficult lessons were to be accomplished and more business to be performed as we were upperclassmen, but we easily passed through this ordeal. Again we thought we needed class leaders, so we elected the following for our officers: Marilyn Neiderhiser, President, Bob Wenig, Vice President, George Kryder, Secretary, Mary Ellen Myers, Treasurer, Albert Bell, Historian, Georgean Titus, News Reporter, Miss Hatcher, Advisor. We also chose our class flower, red and white carnations, class colors, maroon and white, and our class motto, With the ropes of the past, we will ring the bells of the future. During the year, The Ropes Of The Past ICont'd1 three of our thirty members dropped out, and one moved to another school, thus, leaving us twenty-six members for the remainder of the year. One day at the very beginning of the year we were quite excited because our symbol of unity , the class rings, had arrived. Of course we were quite proud as everybody said, My, how pretty they are! During the year we sold refreshments at the basketball games and in the noon hour to increase our class treasury. In November the Seniors entertained us with the annual game supper, after which they took us to the theater in Bowling Green. We all enjoyed the evening very much and appreciated the efforts of the Senior Class. ln May after many hours of practice, we gave our first play, Almost Summer , which was very successful. In return for the Game Supper, we gave the Seniors a Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Much interest was mani- fested in the Banquet and Prom, and it certainly met all expectations. This year, again, our class was quite outstanding in athletics especially intramural basketball. Both the girls and the boys won first place in the class tournament. A few of us had the honor of serving on the McClurean staff as assistant editors. We took part in many activities this year such as the following: sports, F.H.A., musical organization, Latin Club, G.A.A., Prince of Peace Con- test, and student council. Exams over, the usual number of flunkers and quitters and we are Seniors. Twenty-five grand old seniors came back to the dear old M.H.S. to finish their last year. As our officers we elected: President, Virginia Johnson, Vice President, Jane Alspaugh, Sec- retary, Georgean Titusg Treasurer, LaVonda Reimund, Historian, Marilyn Jennings, News Re- porter, Donna Shaffer and Advisor, Mr. Neiderhiser. We started our year by working on our McClurean and we hope to have a good publication. We also chose our school paper staff and have already published a number of issues of the Indian Legends . We have a good start and hope to carry on as well throughout the year. On November ninth we pre- sented our class play Papa Says No! Although it took many hours of practice, it was a big hit and we had a good time along with the work. We gave the Juniors a Game Sup- per November twenty-eighth. We only hope they enioyed it as much as we enioyed plan- ning it for them. We are now looking forward to a grand Junior-Senior Banquet in May. Many of our boys played on the basketball teams this year and although our school wasn't very successful our players were always good sports. We had our Senior pictures taken in October and have received the outcome. Most of us were quite well satisfied. POSTLUDE Now we are looking forward to Baccalaureate, May fourteenth and Commencement, gladness or sadness , a three day trip on a May nineteenth, either with this year. We are planning traveling on the Great Lakes one of the highlights of our anticipation. those others behind the To all our teachers and sincere thankfulness for everything they have done to education. The days of our High School Life are numbered few years when we look backward on those happy Our class is planning something new ship leaving the dock at Detroit and to Niagara Falls and back to Detroit. We think this will be high school career and are looking forward to it with much scenes, we wish to extend our most make it possible for us to receive our and soon they will be history. In a days we shall see that it was then that we laid the foundation upon which we will rear our structure of fame and fortune. Shall we fail? No, we shall not fail. With our motto With the ropes of the past, we will ring the bells of the future, ever before us, we shall hurl aside all obstacles that lie in the way of true happiness and reach our ideal -success in noble living. THE SENIOR CLASS OF I950 The Bells Cf The Future Toledo, Ohio Dem Elmer' June 22, 1960 I received your letter asking about the wedding of two of our classmates, Albert Bell and Anna Lou Smith. It was a very big wedding, all of our classmates were present and were sorry you could not be with us but we were glad to hear that you are doing so well as chief mechanic of Pan American Airways in Honolulu. Perhaps you would like to know what the rest of our classmates are doing. You have probably read about Tom Good, the American League Baseball Player, who goes sight seeing in his Helicopter. His old buddy, Bob Behnfeldt, has also made himself fa- mous as roller skating champion of the world. I was over to Maurice Ballmers' the other evening and had a nice visit with him and his wife, the former Lavonda Reimund. They have three small children and are living near McClure on his father's farm. Have you heard about the new dance team touring the country? They are Virginia John- son and Richard Yarnell. I guess they're quite a hit! I was over to the Toledo Hospital to see Jane Alspaugh, who is recuperating after a long stay in Japan as a missionary. Who do you think I saw, Mildred Shank, the head nurse. She is doing a very nice job. As I was leaving, I ran into Donna Shaffer. She is now employed as a private secretary to the President of the United States. She says that she likes her work in Washington, D. C. Have you heard from your friend Carl Boyd lately? Well he has lust returned from the Navy and is going with Mary Ellen Myers, a teacher in McClure High School. Lavonda Overy and Alice Newlove are housewives, and are living in neighboring towns, Neapolis and Rudolph. Since they have long range television, nowdays, you should get to see Ted Kryder, one of the Worlds' Funniest Comics. He has his own show on television. Bud Zimmerman turned out to be one of the Big Shots in the class. He is President of the First National Bank in Findlay. He has as his private secretaries, Marilyn Jennings and Georg- ean Titus. Our old friend Bob Kistner is doing very well in the secret service of the F. B. I. Virginia Booth, one of the quiet members of our class, is working as a clerk in the new department store in Westhope. After having graduated from Ohio State, Bob Wenig is now head football coach at his Alma Mater. Marilyn Neiderhiser has just returned from Europe where she was an exchange teacher the last few years. Well I guess that is about everything and everybody, as you know my iob as sports com- mentator over W.S.P.D. keeps me plenty busy. I hope you can get back to the states soon. For the first time we elected class officers who are: President, Carolyn Michaelis, Vice President, Shirley Hines, Secretary, Bonnie Beavers, Treasurer, Marlene Johnson, News Re- porter, Martha Harmeyer, Advisor, Miss Smith, and Student Council Representative, James Ashbaugh. With 18 members we began our Junior High School career. We feel more important now that we are on the high school floor. We were very sorry that Arthur Burditt could not begin when we did, but due to a broken leg he started the second six weeks. During the year we had several parties at which we had lots of fun. ,This fun was well mixed with the hard work we put into our studies. Mrs. Bokerman has helped us over many bumps along the winding trail. Going Up! We are now on our way up! For eight years we have been progressing steadily. Now we are getting ready for our last lap. With 23 members we began our eighth year. Velma Green was welcomed as a new mem- ber to our class. For our officers we elected: President, Alan Snider, Vice Pres., Carol Babcock, Treasurer, Marilyn Good, Student Coun- cil, Harold Roesti, News Reporter, Mary Garber, Advisor, Mrs. Bokerman. Due to the excellent guidance of Mrs. Bokerman we have progressed a long way. As al- ways, we expect to put McClure on the map when it comes to those Eighth Grade Scholarship Tests. Mrs. Bokerman has helped us prepare ourselves for these tests. We are looking forward to the most exciting years of school, but we hate to leave Mrs. Bokerman. Thanks to Mrs. Bokerman we are on our way-Up! Our recipe for Going Up is: Season with a dash of Science and Civics, roll them in History and English, add to taste some Math, Home Ec., Typing, Speech, Experience and Common Sense, or any other preferred seasonings. To study and play the day thru, And meet many a classmate new. Rah, our school day comes to a close, Happily each pupil homeward goes, To tell Mamma the day's success, That for nine months we will possess. Third Grade Children are crowded into the room, All are seated row upon row, Three R's are taught from morn till noon With Art keeping the child in tow. A part of their study is Toy-band, With uniforms of both white and red, Then at noon in line they stand, To get a hot lunch with bread. Then back to the room they go, The three R's to continue till four, With helpful teacher going to and fro, So each child gets a good score. ln between they have time to play, Cooperation is the idea for girl and boyp A Third Grade well rounded day, Second Grade That very first exciting day, We came to school in full array, Approaching the door, not the gate, Armed with pencils, books and slate. We left home, many a plaything, When the school bell loudly did ring, In order to learn a lot more, Behind the huge second grade door. We studied many a hard book, To have an intelligent look, Then when the summer days were nigh, We were ready to say Good-bye. Fourth and Fifth Grades We waited all summer for school to begin. We crowded the doors iust to get in. Then upstairs we came with a bound and a leap, Till teacher said, Now, hush, hush, not a peep. We sat in our seats so quiet and meek. While teacher gave us our work for the week. We looked toward a year of work and of PIUYI And to learn something new every hour of Closes for each child with feeling of icy. the day. Sixth Grade On Sept. 5, 1949 when the doors of the McClure School swung open wide they greeted twenty-eight eager boys and girls to the sixth grade. We were glad to welcome into our group three new members: Robert Mann, Carol Hoffman, and Bernard Austermiller. We are anx- iously looking forward to being a part of the High School floor another year. ix! M Q I I AZ l , if ---. Athletics Shoot 'em High The boys are in a huddle. Let's go! they yell. The whistle blows and the game starts. Bob Behnfeldt lumps. Donald Hatfield gets the ball which he throws to Tommy Good, while George Kryder guards his opponent. Tommy then dribbles down the floor to Bob Wenig. Bob makes a basket and McClure scores the first two points of the game. Substitutes for the varsity are: Maurice Ballmer, Deanne Armstrong, Jack Mitchell, Norman Von Seggern, and Ted Kryder. As any basketball fan can testify, the ball goes back and forth until a basket is made. It seems that the basket is sometimes missed. A basketball game can be so thrilling that every- one sits on the edge of his seat, while the boys on the bench sit still C?J chewing gum! Whoops! Some one's bubble gum popped. The officers are: President, Jane Alspaugh, Vice President, Betty Wolfe, Secretary, Lou Anne Good, Treas- urer, Joyce Wagner, News Reporter, Charleen Mason, and Advisor, Mrs. Harmon. We have a point system by which we can earn letters, pins, or sweaters. Some ways by which we can get points are hiking, bicycling, tumbling, holding an office, and so forth. In our gym class we play baseball and basketball plus our exercises. In basketball, we feel that we are ready to compete against the boys' basketball team, if they will play girls' rules. Our costumes are green gym suits and gym shoes. All the girls are dressed alike when they play games or appear in gym class. We have played girls from other schools in basketball. We hope to improve a lot in the future. Since we are only two years old we feel that we are improving even though we have lost to the Liberty Center girls. We're the Tumbling Janes of M.H.S. Since the two umpires have just arrived, we will begin the game. The Soup Bowl is filled to its capacity. McClure is up to bat. From here it looks as though the Ridgeville players haven't a chance. Rhythmaires In 1946 the rhythm band was organized by the music teacher and the first, second, and third grade teachers. Since that time the rhythm band has made numerous appearances at such things as Farmers' Institute, Christmas programs, and P.T.A. For the first several years, the costume of the toy band consisted of white trousers, red crepe paper capes and cardboard hats. Now, the capes and hats have been replaced by red satin capes and red felt berets with white pom-poms. The trousers and capes were made by the mothers of the students. The Mothers' Club purchased the capes and the first three grades bought the hats by money raised when they appeared in various programs. The toy band also has given skits with some of their numbers. Such skits as Bicycle Built for Two , Casey at the Bat , Short'nen Bread , and Across the Field , have been pre- sented. During the intervals when McClure didn't have a music teacher, the toy band was di- rected by Mrs. Glenn Shepard, first grade teacher, Mrs. F. J. Neiderhiser, third grade teacher, and Miss Cinda Hatcher, accompanist. At present, we are very fortunate to have it under the direction of a very competent music teacher, Miss Smith. The rhythm band is a big success and greatly enjoyed by all who come to hear it. Sing If Again Sweef And Low Sing It Again Sing it again is a familiar phrase that we hear in Glee Club. Seconds, you're flat! Firsts, you're sharp! Altos, you're off tune! This happens many times, but finally we hear that we have sung a song without any mistakes. Our Girls' Glee Club, under the supervision of Miss Smith, has made numerous perform- ances, including an operetta. In our music library, we have such songs as l'II Never Walk Alone , Evening Prayer , Hark to the Bells , and Early One Morning . With the help of our music teacher, Miss Anne Smith, we have tried to make our music program a success. Sweet And Low Sweet and Low! That is how the voices of the boys of M.H.S. sound! They sound like professionals Csometimesjl These boys have made different appearances, some as solo, others in duet, or in a group. We are very proud of our Boys' Glee which is under the careful direction of Miss Smith. We know that we aren't always sweet little boys, but we fsometimesl are low and on pitch. We hope the future Boys' Glee improves. No one will ever forget us! We really think that there is little room for improvement Cbragging not complainingl. Seriously though, we really want to thank our music teacher, Miss Smith, for her numerous efforts. We hope they were not in vain. Music Lovers The mixed chorus is divided into two groups: the 7th and 8th Mixed Chorus and the High School Mixed Chorus. Each of these two groups meet once a week. They have made several appearances during the year. Each year some of the McClure's Chorus are repre- sented at the County Music Festival. They are interested in public speak- ing which consists of choral reading, interviews, parliamentary procedure, impromptu speech- es, debates, rules for acting, character make-up and story telling. Every six weeks the class elects new officers so each member will have a chance to use his knowledge of parliamentary procedure. When we finally got to the section that pertained to dramatics we found that this can be very interesting, especially when we can make-up our fellow class members. Since we are to be Future Orators we might as well 'start now. The amateur orator threw out his chest: My friends: The schoolwork is the bulhouse of civilization -I mean -ah . The purposes of the United Student Council are: A To aid in the internal administration of the school B. To foster sentiments of law and order C. To promote general activities of the school D To develop in the student, a growing appreciation of membership in a democ- racy E. To promote in all ways the best interests of the school. We have two boys and two girls from each of the upper four grades, and one boy or girl from each of the seventh grade and the eighth grade. This makes a total of eighteen members. From this group a Senior president, a Junior vice-president, a Sophomore secre- tary, and a Freshman treasurer are elected. The news reporter is elected at random. We, the United Student Council , hope to make our council a success and a perma- nent organization in McClure High School. Mr. Neiderhiser and Mrs. Harmon are our advisors. The McClure Beanery Pushing Ofher People's Dirf Pushing Other People's Dirt Want a room cleaned? Just call Mr. Doyle Good, the man who pushes other people's dirt. Few of us appreciate the work that he does. It takes lots of work to keep the school building clean, comfortable, and in order. Mr. Good must rise very early on cold mornings in order to heat the building by 9:00 A.M. He is working hard while the rest of us are deep in slumber. Then when any activities take place at night, he must be there to unlock the doors, turn on the lights, clean up any messes, and lock the doors again before he leaves. Mr. Good is the man to whom we go for any assistance that is needed for taking care of the school house. He has several helpers including his wife and daughter, Lou Anne. Pushing Cther People's Dirt seems to be his duty day after day. He is very deserv- ing of any praise he may get. The McClure Beanery When it comes to food, don't worry, for you will be well fed in the McClure Cafeteria. Again this year, we had very good cooks, Mrs. Oscar Busch and Mrs. David Hatfield. They gave us well balanced and appetizing meals. They were good! They certainly worked hard and long in order to give us such good food. We wonder how they did it! A way to a man's heart is through his stomach is an old saying that our cooks have proved to be true. At least, it worked for the cooks! With the encouragement of our local doctor, Dr. J. A. Ruder and with the aid of the government, a new cafeteria was established for the school-year of 1939-1940. The late Mrs. Ruth Adams was the first cook. Practically every year since that time, something new has been added to the cafeteria. Within the last six years, a new refrigerator, a new stove, built-in cupboards, ci new sink, an electric potato masher, and numerous other articles have been added. Government sur- plus has provided some dried fruit to the school which is served after being properly pre- pared. To the cooks we sincerely extend our thanks for the good meals. To Dr. Ruder we extend our gratitude for helping establish a cafeteria. Mr. Reimund, Mr. Brown, Mr. Bohling, Mr. Tietie Cruising Down The Road For five days a week, thirty-six weeks a year, our bus drivers go cruising down the road around 7:30 A.M. and again at 3:30 P.M. We have four very competent men as our bus drivers. They are Mr. Ernest Bohling, Mr. Bryce Brown, Mr. Ernest Reimund, and Mr. Otto Tietie. Mr. Tietie drives the Westhope bus. The bus that Mr. Reimund drives is a board owned bus. The other buses are indi- vidually owned by the drivers. Through rain or snow, in fact, during almost any kind of weather, our bus drivers make their rounds to pick up the students. This is sometimes to our disappointment. We wish to express our thanks and gratitude to the men who go cruising down the road . Time Marches On These were the little guys and gals of the 193O's, now let's see who they are. H's Our Lazy Day Since this is our last year of high school we thought it would be nice to be natural in iust one picture. The Senior girls seem to be having a lot of fun, but why that look, Mary Ellen? The boys broke their cider jug so they had to display the remains. Those expressions aren't from the cider, we're sure of that. By the way, boys, how did that iug get broken? A Person Worth Knowing ICont'd1 Mr. Neiderhiser has been here seven years. During this time, he has done much to improve our school and community. Through his efforts, our playground has been improved. When Mr. Neiderhiser arrived we had only a merry-go-round and a teeter-board. Now we have a slide, swings, a walking ladder, and a cement tennis court, which can be used as an out-door basketball court. This has been no expense to the school board. He also has secured machinery for the workshop through government surplus, with no cost to the Board of Education. With the combined efforts of Mr. Neiderhiser and Mr. B. E. Snider, a Smith- Hughes Home Economics Department was established. The Home Economics room is the nic- est in Henry County. Into the school curriculum, he has added public speaking. This course is a modern subiect which is invaluable in life. In public speaking, make-up, dramatics, debates, round- table discussions, parliamentary procedure, and speeches are studied. Mr. Neiderhiser takes an active part in community and church affairs. Ever since our superintendent came to McClure in 1943, he has been a Sunday school teacher in the E.U.B. Church. Mr. Neiderhiser has also served on the church council. Superintendent Neiderhiser belongs to the Bethany Grange, Pomona Grange, Masons, T.B. and Polio Committees, plus many other organizations. Before Mr. Neiderhiser came to McClure, he was principal at McComb. There he also took and active part in school and community activities. Superintendent Neiderhiser direct- ed numerous plays in which he and his wife did all the make-up. He, with the help of his wife, Mrs. Neiderhiser, organized and directed the C.E. for young people of his church and community. Mr. Neiderhiser taught the Young People's Sunday school classes of two churches. He also acted as pastor for several ministers of the area while they were on vacation. Superintendent Neiderhiser founded the Mock Trial in McComb Schools, where he taught public speaking and history, along with his supervision work. Mr. Neiderhiser received his formal education at Findlay College and Columbia Univer- sity. He is now working on his Ph.D. at Ohio State University. Mr. Neiderhiser has arranged into the school schedule, a Chapel Service, for the fur- thering of Christian ideals. This is new in our school. Through his tireless efforts, the cafeteria has been immensely improved during the last seven years. This has been done with no expense to the Board of Education. A new sink, a refrigerator, and other numerous articles have been added. The lights in the study hall have been added through the efforts of Mr. Neiderhiser and the co-operation of the students and community in raising enough money to buy these lights. Mr. Neiderhiser is well known throughout this area for his oratorical ability. He also is well known in other areas for this same reason. Our superintendent has spoken num- erous times before church and civic meetings. We, more or less, have taken Superintendent Neiderhiser for granted. Mr. Neiderhiser has done much to indoctrinate new ideas and thoughts into our minds by his tireless efforts. We are very fortunate to have such a qualified, industrious, experienced educator, civic leader, Christian worker for all churches, an outstanding citizen, and friend to everyone, as our superintendent. Our Ideal Man ICont'd1 Mr. Brandon has been in school work for 44 years. Forty-two of these years have been spent in administration. He has been Superintendent of Schools at Hollansburg, Martinsburg, and Holgate. For three years, Mr. Brandon was District Superintendent of Defiance and Coun- ty Superintendent of Defiance County. This is the ninth year for Mr. Brandon as County Superintendent of Henry County. Almost all of Mr. Brandon's college work was taken in summer school after he had begun to teach. He is a graduate of Defiance College. Mr. Brandon also has taken gradu- ate work at Ohio State University. Supt. Brandon is affiliated with such organizations as the Masons. He and his wife are members of the Presbyterian Church of Napoleon. Mr. Brandon is recognized as a prominent educator by the Ohio Department of Educa- tion. He also is recognized as an outstanding orator. Supt. Brandon has very high ideals. He is always a friend to everyone. Supt. Bran- don is well known and well liked wherever he goes. He takes an interest in the welfare of his church and community. Our schools have been immensely improved and modernized by his tireless efforts. As a Christian leader, educator, and friend, he rates very high. Let us never again take Supt. Brandon for granted. He is our ldeal Man . The Men Behind The School fCont'd1 These men have always stood behind our school. They have been sure that the stu- dents of McClure School get the best education possible on the limited budget which they have. We feel that the McClure School District has shown a great interest in school affairs by selecting such men as they have for the Board of Education -past and present. These men have made us feel very proud of our school. The Spirit of '51 I C onf'd I As the Spirit of '5l we feel very happy now that we are Juniors.
