I f JEWQ M41 Qyyby THE 22014 U L R C E C A M N 949 Om mee ' We, the class of forty-nine, wish to dedicate this annual to our Superintendent Mr. Neiderhiser. He was our class advisor in our Senior year and helped us make this annual possible. He also has shown much patience and kindness in helping us with our class ac- tivities. We hope this expresses our gratitude for the many things he has helped us do. This is his sixth year as Superintendent here at M.H.S. and has given much good advice. ' tandem! M. E. Brandon Sedan! H. S. in 1937, not realizing what we were getting in- to. With the kind guidance of Miss Irene Bruns, we endured the first year. Miss Evelyn Peery took over Miss Bruns iob for our second year. The class consisted of the original twenty. ln our third year, our class increased to twenty-four. We were still under the super- vision of Miss Peery. At the beginning of our fourth school year, we lost four of our classmates. Our class was divided with seven members in Mrs. Bohling's room and thirteen in Mrs. Wulff's room. During the year Anna Lou Bliss and Virginia Adams moved away leav- ing us with eighteen members. Our class was divided in our fifth year between Miss Welsh and Miss Sockman. Maurice Dull came at the beginning of the year making the total nineteen. Mrs. Helen Travis took us for our sixth year. The class number remaining nineteen. On entering the seventh grade, we were invited down stairs with The High School Classes. Miss Hibler helped all twenty of us settle down after making this important change. Mrs. Bokerman was our teacher for our eighth year. Our class then consisted of nine- teen members. Nineteen Green Freshmen started on the long journey in 1945. We elected the fol- lowing officers for the year: President, Melva Booth, Vice-President, Maurice Dull, Secretary, Frank Weaks, Treasurer, Jim Good, and Class Sponsor, Mr. Middleton. During the year Joy L. Crom, Rosemary Henninger, Sheldon Pres- ton, and Frank Weaks ioined our class. James Naveau left. We were initiated by the Sopho- mores on October 12, and gave them a re- turn party soon afterwards. As Sophomores we started with twenty- two members. We chose as our class officers: President, Charles Shepard, Vice-President, Paul Richards, Secretary, Joy Crom, Treasurer, Naomi Farison, and Class Sponsor, Mrs. Mc- Clure. We initiated the Freshmen, and be- cause they were so grateful, they gave us a return party. With the goal of a successful school year in mind, our class of seventeen elected Doris Jean Fryman as President, Naomi Farison as Vice-President, Betty Wagner as Secretary, Paul Richard as Treasurer, Doris Jean Jennings as News Reporter, and Miss Hatcher as our Class Advisor. During the year Virginia Adams left. By selling refreshments at the basketball games and subscriptions for maga- zines, we increased our treasury a little. On April 30, we presented a three-act play, The Adorable Age under the direction of Miss Hatcher. The Seniors gave us the game sup- per on November 18. To return the honor we gave them the Junior-Senior Banquet on May 14. We entered the last and best year, our Senior year, with sixteen members. We elected for class leaders the following: Naomi Fari- son, President, Paul Richard, Vice-President, Betty Wagner, Secretary, Melva Booth, Treas- urer, Doris Jean Fryman, News Reporter, and Mr. Neiderhiser, Class Sponsor. On October 22, we presented the Senior Class Play, Take Your Medicine. We gave the Juniors the game supper on November 17. They are now planning to give us the Junior-Senior Banquet sometime in May. This Class of '49 has taken part in sports, music, scholarship tests, and other activities throughout our high school years. Wa!! He is looking through a telescope to the Mars planet and tells his pupils of his famous classmates of 1949 who are there. Hoping to discover a way to go see them. Until a discovery is made we will look at them through this telescope. I see two girls in grass skirts flirting with Alan Ladd and Bing Crosby. Shame on those old married women. Oh well, it's iust Melva and Doris Jean. You could expect that. We wonder who that iealous woman is in the background. O, that's iust Alan Ladd's wife, the former Betty Wagner. Now on this part of the planet there is Mrs. Galen Houser, the former Joy Crom, who is now visiting the neighbor lady, Naomi Farison. She owns an airplane and has Bill Mason as the pilot and Dona Lou Lashaway as the air stewardess. Maurice Dull is the mechanic. Turning to another part of the planet we find Mid-driff city, one of the largest cities on the planet. lt is largely composed of some of the members of McClure High School's 1949 class. We find Irene Foor as the number one beauty operator with the latest of hair styles. Across the street l see Martha Dilsaver as the most important restaurant owner on the planet, with Charles Shepard as chief cook and bottle washer. Doris Jean Fryman is the very attractive waitress. Look at that handsome captain on that ship. Why it's Bill Alspaugh - we might have known. Jim Browning, our number one artist, now works for Jim Good on the farm when his art work is finished. This includes all of my classmates of '49. Now to get back to my class work and our invention. aaW4me'71! at 5 fn' .dai Q-:gif we FIRST ROW --A111 You guessed it, it's Joy. 121 Three Handsome Seniors, Chuck, Bill A., and Bill M. 131 Mr. and Mrs. 1no lust lmidding1 it is Fryman and Alspaugh. 141 Mr. Behnfeldl, I presume. 151 Look close, and you'll see that it is Ballmer. 161 Why, Charles, what beautiful legs you have! We, the Junior class, started our 'Ilth year with 30 members but as time went by Alice Winch, Delbert Clark and Bryce Bossa dropped out, and Alice New love moved to another school, thus leaving us 26 members. We have taken part in many activities and hope we can accomplish as much as Seniors as we have as Juniors. 6 The Sophomore class of 1948-49 entered the doors of M.H.S. with eleven members. We welcomed Jean Zimmerman from Liberty Center. On October 1, 1948 we had the joy of initiating the Freshmen. On Decem- ber 10, 1948 the Freshmen gave us a return party. This year the band has been hard at work much more concentration and practice than we at the Institute, and although the band gave no school functions and P.T.A. programs with giving playing before audiences. reorganizing. We have found out that it takes expected. Our first appearance was in January Concert of its own, it provided entertainment at the valuable experience to the new members of mace waz! 4 maze UPPER LEFT: Mrs. Turner. UPPER RlGl'lT: Mr. Good. LOWER: Mrs. Busch and Mrs. Chamberlain. Mrs. Turner, our librarian, is always willing to help us in finding good books to read. She also helps us to find information for book reports and thernes. Mr. Good is the one that keeps things clean. We owe him a lot of thanks in keeping our school clean and attractive. Mrs. Chamberlain and Mrs. Busch always have a good dinner ready at noon. We can be glad to have good warm dinners ready for us. Mrs. Chamberlain has also helped the Home Ec- onomics department in our First Aid course. ATH LE I Wdfldlflq Bill Alspauglt The only Senior on the Varsity squad. Bill played guard and did a very good job of it. Bill wishes the next year's Basketball team and Mr. Carver a lot of luck. Bob Behnfeldt Bob is a Junior and plays center on the Varsity. The team will be glad to have Bob back next year. Tom Good Tom is CI Junior and plays guard. Tom makes a good defensive player and will be here to help out M.H.S. another year. Bob Wenig Bob is a Junior and plays forward. Bob is a fast player and can get up there to get that ball. Maurice Ballmer Maurice is a Junior and plays forward. Maurice is small in stature, but is always ready to sink a basket. George K ryder George is another Junior and plays guard and forward. He is a small boy but can sure get around to get that ball. Norman Von Seggern Norman is a Sophomore and plays center on the reserves and part time on the varsity. Nor- man is a very fast boy and can get up in the air. 64086464 The Reserves did pretty good this year and showed a lot of fight. The Junior High did very well this year and were out to Bring Home the Bacon by play- ing very good basketball. They showed a lot of fight and a lot of spirit. Mr. Carver, our coach, has helped us in basketball and baseball this season regardless of victory or defeat. We, the Athletic Association, wish to extend our thanks, as he has spent a good many of his hours to coach us to do the right things at the right time. Regardless if we didn't set a record this year we are looking forward to a good season next year. Z The baseball team did pretty well this year considering that most of the games were played away from home due to the wet diamond at home. The dirt hauled in last year helped a lot but the weather was against them. What it needs is a lot more tile as the nick name is still The Soup Bowl. PUBLIC SPEAKING STAFF The public speaking class is made up of both Juniors and Seniors. We have studied choral reading, impromptu speeches, rules for acting, character make- up, story telling, special speeches, interviews, telephone conversations, and par- liamentary procedure. One of our proiects was organizing a student council. Several of the mem- bers either visited or wrote to other schools for information about their student councils. We promoted the idea by making speeches before the other classes. We now have formed a student council. The officers are as follows: President .,......... ....,. B ill Alspaugh Vice President ....., .,.... L avonda Overy Secretary ,...,...... ..,....,..,.,.. C arol Hull Treasurer .,.. ..... D eane Armstrong Reporter . . ..,..,... Roger Kerwin The purposes of the student council are: A. To aid in the internal administration of the school B. To foster sentiments of law and order C. To promote general activities of the school D. To develop in the student a growing appreciation of membership in a democracy E. To promote in all ways the best interests of the school. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA One of the chief problems constantly facing us is the matter of teaching personnel for the public schools. Out of this problem came the organization of Future Teachers of America. The local organization of the McClure High School was organized in September of 1948, under the sponsorship of Miss Hatcher, with the following officers: President .,... .,... M arilyn Neiderhiser Vice-President .,... .,... L avonda Reimund Secretary ,....,..,. ..,..., J ane Alspaugh Treasurer .........,.. .......... B ryce Bossa News Reporter ..,.... ..,.. V irginia Johnson The purpose of the club is to assist high school boys and girls in deciding whether or not they should be teachers. The members of the club have been substituting for the teachers in the school and acting as aides to them. The club is exploratory, and membership in it could result not only in recruitment of teachers, but also in a future citizen obtaining a comprehension of the prob- lems of teachers. .7 ,Hama 0 i ' 5 ,Q STANDING-Bob Wenig, Jane Alspaugh, Mary Ellen Myers, Marilyn Jennings, Marilyn Neiderhiser, Mr, Neiderhiser, George Kryder, SEATED-Martha Dilsaver, Irene Foor, Donna Lou Lashaway, Doris Jean Fryman, Paul Richard, Bill Alspaugh. The Girls' Physical Education was direct- ed this year by Miss Sworden. This year the girls all purchased gym suits that are green, and some of the girls have put their names on them. The girls' classes played intramural basketball this year also. Latin Club The Latin class is making progress even if it is small. The class also forms a club con- sisting of all the past students of Latin. This study of Latin will be of much help in future life. Typing This year the typing class was too large to let everyone take it that wanted to. And the ones that are taking it can receive only one-half credit as they cannot have two per- iods. The class consists of mostly Juniors and a few Typing Il students in the class. Chemistry Here's the place where we mix up the secret formula. The secret formula is noth- ing more than study and more study. The study gives us a chance to know what makes things live and stick together. The antics of Paul Richard, who was never satisfied with the service and care he was given in the hospital especially amused the audience. Doris Jean Fryman and James Browning contem- plating launching into the sea of matrimony, used great strategy in winning over their mean-tempered, old stingy, wealthy uncle for their own pecuniary needs. The rest of the supporting cast did a splendid iob. The members of the entire cast were well-chosen for their parts.
