Its task ot preserving fond memories is a noble one, but underlying is the greater task, that ot arousing public interest, Without which the progress of any school is retarded. It is our sincere hope that by creating this annual, we are play- ing a small part in keeping M.H.S. in the community limelight. WE DEDICATE THIS ANNUAL to you, Underclassmen, not only because We know you as friends and associates, but also be- cause you are middle men in the history of McClure Village School. Through you alone can our school continue to live and grow in honor and prestige. Hold hiqh the spirit of M.H.S., and make loyalty to her a major concern, that students of the past may take pride, and students of the future qain benefit of your efforts. P T PORTR YED When the doors of McClure School were opened in the fall of the year 1936, twenty- seven excited children started their school life under the direction of Miss Eleanor Adler. Miss Irene Bruns taught us in our second year, during which we had an enrollment of twenty-six. Two new members were added to our enrollment. Miss Evelyn Peery was the guiding hand in our third grade. Our class increased to thirty-three members. After leaving Miss Peery's room We were taught by Miss Florence Kistner in our fourth year. Our class enrollment was 30. The fifth year we were under the instruc- tion of Miss Bernita Gillespie with the total of 29 members. We, as sixth graders, taught by Miss Betty Sockman, said good-bye to four classmates and welcomed two new members, making our number 30. ln our seventh year we were promoted to the high school floor which made us feel quite important. We then had a class of 32, and continued into the eighth grade with 24 members. Then We were ready to begin our high school life. On September 3, 1943, twenty-eight Fresh- men started on their short journey of four years. During the year we welcomed one new member. We elected the following offi- cers for the year: Pres.-Richard Shepard, Vice Pres.-Ralph Shaneyfelt, Sec.-Treas.- Thelma Newlove, Class Sponsor-Miss Hib- ler. On October l, the old custom of initiation was administered to us by the Sophomores, and this was returned with a party in honor of Sadie Hawkins Day, on November 16. As Sophomores, 23 in all, We set our goals and attained them. We worked a little harder in our studies, but also had a good time while doing it. We elected the following officers: Donna Boyer-Pres., Ralph Shaneyfelt-Vice Pres., Dorothy Kinder-Sec.-Treas., and Mr. Middleton as sponsor. We gave the Fresh- men the annual Initiation Party on Oct. tFri- dayl 13th, for which in retum, they gave us a party. With the goal of a successful school year in mind, our class of 19 elected Donald Spangler as President, Ralph Hines as Vice President, Ieanne Kramer as Sec.-Treas., Thelma Newlove as reporter, and Miss Hatcher as class sponsor. We increased our treasury by sponsoring a chicken supper and operating the refreshment stand at home basketball games. We presented a three-act play, Uncertain Wings under the direction of Miss Hatcher. The Seniors gave us a Game Supper November 19th. In return we gave the Iunior-Senior Banquet, May 9th. We entered our last year of school with twenty members. We elected the following officers for the year: Donald Spangler-Pres., Ralph Hines-Vice Pres., lla lean Arnold- Secy., Ieanne Kramer-Treas., and Mr. Neid- erhiser as sponsor. Calvin Von Seggern en- tered our class at the beginning of the second semester after serving in the United States Army. He has come back to finish his schooling and receive his diploma. FATES FORllTOLD SCENE-the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hines TIME-a summer evening in the year 1967 As we approach, the master of the house, Mr. Hines, is seated in a comfortable chair, reading his favorite newspaper, and talking to himself in low tones. Ho-hum, reading the Blade is getting to be a dull pastime-never anything interest- ing in it anymore. Who wants to read about foreign diplomats, foreign correspondents, foreign affairs-seems as though everything is foreign these days, never anything fami- liar. What l want to see is a newspaper with real news, news about people l'm fond of, say, like my old classmates at M. H. S. This chair sure is comfy-now, wouldn't it be nice if a man could possess a newspaper that would give him a line on all his Class of '47 friends-a man could enjoy that-ho-hum, getting sleepy, l guess- Well, this beats the bugs a' bitin'! l This isn't the Blade- Sentimental Sentinel , it says here, Editor-in-Chief, Thelma Newlovel l lt's hard to believe, from Newsette to news- paper in twenty years. She's doing all right! 1-lm, weather report is right here in the corner, funny one too. lt's always fair weather, when good friends get together , by your weather boy, Ralph Shaneyfelt. Interesting Headlines, Senator Carrol in- troduces a new bill to the House . lt is his hope that this bill will end forever all labor- management strife. Here's a human interest story, Chicago housewife was seized by a fit of giggling at her home three weeks ago, and has been giggling ever since. Experts trace this un- usual phenomena to Mrs. Richard Shepard's high school days where, her husband sub- mits, she was always giggling. She is the former Miss lla lean Arnold. Another front pager, Miss Pauline Shep- ard, head of Toledo's new Day Nursery, is lecturing this afternoon at Toledo University to a group of Home Economics students. Miss Shepard is considered an expert in the field of child care. Say, this paper even has funnies, here's a clever strip, Little Foo Lou , by Allen len- nings. This must be the society page, Mrs. lay Wilson announces the wedding of her daugh- ter Virginia to lohnny Fellabaum, a Toledo- an. Say, she must have had trouble decid- ing on the man, let's see, she must be crowd- ing thirty-eight by now. Here's another interesting item. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ward are celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary today. They are resid- ing near Perrysburg wnere they operate a modern filling station for heliocopters. Miss Shirley Wagner has boarded the Ocean Liner, Lucinda , to travel around the world. Miss Wagner is said to prefer this old-time method of travel to the newer rocket planes because she likes to see where she's been. Whatever could have become of my friend Ward, I wonder. Better look in the advertises ments, never can tell. Well, here it is, Get your copy now-the famous Ward Wenig's latest literary achievement, How to Relax . ln his popular book, Mr. Wenig explains the fine art of falling asleep under any condi- tions-your money back if not completely satisfied. This sounds like one of my classmates. No't responsible for any debts contracted by my wife. Mr. lames Gerken, route No. 17. Westhope, Ohio. l-lere's another, For sale. A 1933 Ford-- this is a genuine antique, turned down by a leading museum only because of a decora- tive picture on the door. This is a real buy, take advantage of it. Gilbert Dull, 137 Main St., McClure, Ohio. ls that really Maurice Wells in this news picture. Yes, it shows him as he is crossing the finish line in a Cleveland Motorcycle race. The picture is rather blurred, wonde who, oh, yeah, it's taken by Donnie Spang ler, press photographer. Well, look who has a column in the peact section, Miss Dorothy Busch's Youngsters Be Atomic -pretty clever. I-lere's a front page story, Miss Nonc Ruyf, experienced professional nurse, ha: just accepted a position in a New Yorl 'Home for the Aged.' When Miss Ruyf reac the registration cards she saw some familia: names, Mr. F. I. Neiderhiser, Miss Cindc Hatcher, Mrs. Arlie Bokerman, Mrs. Nellie McClure, Mr. Ralph Rotsel, Mr. Howard Mid dleton, Mr. Loren Beck, and Mr. Farison Upon seeing these she is reported to have ex claimed, 'Who'd a thunk it'1 Well, here it says, Phil Spitalny has jus' signed a new 3rd trumpet player. Her name is Donna Boyer. Mr. Spitalny tells us that she has been trying to enter his band for twenty years, and has had seventy-two inter- views with him! l Ouch! I lunior, lunior, put down that bean shooter. Gee, l must have fallen asleep- what a dream! He was bom in Bryan, Ohio, and received his higher education at Bowling Green State University. Having served Uncle Sam, he is now doing a fine job of sewing on our teaching staff. Coach Rotsel found his team-to-be, in great need af extra material, because of the graduation in '46 of most of the regular varsity. He has built his teams on the material at hand, and we feel that he has done a good job. Our man Rotsel has an eye out for the younger boys, and is training them early for their basketball careers. His leadership qualities will go far in keeping M.H.S. in the sports race . Calvin Von Seggern and Ward Wenig joined the team after this picture was taken. Spangler Don gave his opponents plenty of trouble by his expert ball hawking. He, like Wenig, was an expert at interception. Don's special shot was a one hander down the right side ot the floor, and he made them at the right moment. Good luck, Don. Shepard Cork proved to be as valuable a team player as We had-many times he passed the ball to a teammate when the chances were very good for him to score too. He led the way in scoring in several games. His ball handling paved the Way for more than one basket. Hines Ralph certainly lived up to everyone's ex- pectation in basketball this year. He was a toughie on the front line of defense and a sharpshooter under his own basket. Ralph's top for the season was 22 points against Florida. His basket making ability will be missed next year. Allen Stretch -our tallest!-fdiscovered late in the season that he too could score points. Iohn Will be back next year, and should make the loss of Ralph and Cork a little easier to take. Good luck next year, Iohn. Von Seggem D. D. joined the squad after Working for Uncle Sam. He added to the height of the team, and his one handers from the foul line area helped boost our score on several occasions. He gave Stretch much needed help under the basket. Weniq Ward was one of our fightenest players- he kept plugging and passing away until the last whistle. He played outstanding games against Florida and Malinta. He in- terrupted passes time and again, that would have meant scores for the oppositions. He didn't score many points during the season but made those count the most that he did make. Our hope-fuls for next year includes Lee Miller and Paul Hartman, Iuniors, Bill Als- pagh, Sophomore, and a host of Frosh with the most outstanding being Bryce Bossa and Bob Behnfeldt.
