MC CLUREAN 44 J MCCLUREAN APPRECIATION We, the Annual Staff, wish to express our deepest and most sincere appreciation to our superintendent, lVlr. Neiderhiser. Through his patience and faithful guidance, we have made a firm stand on the first rung of the ladder of success. By his ever- present willingness to explain and make us understand the dif- ficulties we met while in school, he has prepared us to meet and overcome the obstacles which we shall face on the road to suc- cess. We shall always remember him as a friend who was ever- ready and willing to help. DEDICATION To the Armed Forces of the United States of America, we respectfully dedicate this 1944 lVlcClurean. During the two and one-half years in which we have been engaged in war with the Axis, countries, many of the graduates of NlcClure High School have been called into the service of their country. They did not hesitate when the call came: in fact, many did not wait for the call to come. Of their own free will, they left their jobs, families, and friends to come to the aid of their country. A large percentage of these people are now treading foreign soil, while some are still in training, inside the United States. We are fortunate that the number of war casualties for McClure is small, but it is inevitable that many more will make the supreme sacrifice before we win a complete victory. With our hearts full of pride, we salute them and their com- rades, and wish them a quick victory and a safe return. Baseball 3-4 Class Play 3 Newsette 4 Annual 4 19444 A SENIOR CLASS 9 ? d. 1 MCCLUREAN CLASS HISTORY Thirty pupils meekly began their high school life September 2, as frivolous Fresh- men. During the year one member of our class, Nellie Damon, moved away. The follow- ing officers were electedl La Vonda Culbertson, President: Marilyn Reid, Vice President: Eunice Rudolph, Secretary-Treasurer: and Marilyn Boyer, News Reporter. We were entertained f?J at the traditional initiation party given by the Sopho- mores on September 20. On October 25, we returned the questionable compliment with a party for the Sophomores. The Sophomore class started the year out with thirty members. During the year we lost three members. They were Violet Fuhrhop, Ralph Sheely and Helena Williams. Our officers were: President, Ralph Knepley: Vice President, Charles Whitman: Sec- retary-Treasurer, Robert McClure. On October 3, we gave the Freshmen their initiation party. We were then given a return party on October 23. In September, 24 students started their Junior year at McClure High. During this year we lost two members from our class, La Vonda Culbertson who moved to Grand Rapids and Charles Whitman who is now at sea with the United States Navy. We elected as our President, Ellen Smith: Vice-President, Mary Lou Mills: and Secretary-Treasurer, Lois Miller. During the year the Senior class gave us a game supper. In May we gave them the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. We also gave the Junior class play Brother Goose. At last we reach our Senior year with a total of 23 members, two of which are married, leaving us 21 members. They were Lucille Kistner and Arlene Good. November 5, the Senior class gave the play t'Sister Susie Swings It. During our high school life we have participated in music, sports, F.F.A. and Scholarship Tests. MCCLUREAN SENICR PROPHECY Wandering aimlessly not long ago, my friend and I were attracted to a dilapidated shop by the queerness of its display. Nothing of any value seemed to be exposed through the cracked and fly-specked glass. A worn and deeply nicked scythe rested in the corner, while a spent hour glass covered with dust completed the incongruous exhibition. Upon entering we found Father Time seated in an old rickety chair sound asleep. Loud snores issuing from his cavernous mouth shook him to the depth of his gaunt and bony skeleton. Looking over his shoulder, we discovered a massive volume which we found to be the Book of Fate, its smudged pages glowing with prophecies that heretofore only Time could tell. Its pages were opened by some enigmatic chance to the year 1964. With all due deference to venerable Father Time, we still felt it our duty to our classmates to find what would be their fates. Appropriating a grimy notebook and a feathered quill, we hoisted ourselves on three-legged stools and copied down the following: Ellen Smith, former editor of The Newsette, now owns and operates the Toledo Blade. The 15th squadron of the Army W.A.C. is composed of drummers. Our old class- mate Eunice Rudolph now heads the group. Our former classmate Mary Jane Booth now is matron of the Hope On Home for the homeless. We find one of her favorite charges is a retired missionary Helen Lashaway. Mary Louise Fryman is now the Postmaster-General in President George Wells' cabinet. ln case you don't know who the first lady of the land is, it is none other than Marie Duquette. Would you believe it? Marilyn Reid, the most likely to succeed is now the mother of nine children, and at the age of thirty-eight is still happily married to a prosperous farmer. Evelyn Kramer is now concert pianist at Carnegie Hall for Mary Lou Mills, our high school singer. After downing fifteen Jap planes in World War ll, Richard Baker, now a Major, is instructing a group of boys at Bowling Green University in flying. Wilma Shepard is now married to the Navy man, Edwin Geitgey. They live at Great Lakes Naval Training Station where he is an instructor. Joyce Brown, once married to Galen Houser, is now seeking a divorce at Reno. The question is who will be the next victim? Ralph Knepley at the tender age of thirty-eight is the world wide jitterbugger. Our only eligible bachelor, Robert McClure, is back in this part of the country again after purchasing a few oil wells in the West. Lois Miller and Marcella Hull now are famous make-up artists for Paramount Studios in Hollywood. Lucille Orwig is now head of the nursing staff at Flower Hospital in the nearby city of Toledo. Phyllis Middleton is now leading lady in the Follies of 1964. As to what happened to us, Father Time awoke and told us of our fate. After graduating from Nurses Training, Marie Hartman is now married and lives at Columbus, Ohio. Marilyn Boyer who was voted the best dancer of our class now is a partner to Fred Astaire, Jr. At this point, Father is rather disgusted with our disturbing him. We shall now leave this dingy dilapidated shop and continue our separate ways as our former class mates have done. Lois Miller, will my editorial job to anyone who enjoys a good headache. Evelyn Kramer, will my ability to play the piano and slap the naughty boys who bother me to Vivien Crom. George Wells, will my ability to get around with all the girls to Robert Ballmer. Robert McClure, will my ability to skip school to Evelyn Clark. JUNIOR CLASS ln September, 1943, a group of 15 students started their Junior year at McClure High School. During the year Lola Smith left our class. We welcomed Dorothy Copper in with us. We elected the following officers: President, Vivien Crom: Vice-Presi- dent, Fern Richard: Secretary, Francis Diblingg and Treasurer, Murrel Allen. The Seniors gave us the annual game supper in November and we were entertained by a show in Bowling Green. ln return for this we will give them the annual Junior-Senior Banquet in May. We gave our Junior Class play, Miss Jimmie March 24. We received many compliments about it. The of- ficers for the year were elected in October as follows: President, Keith Miller: Vice-President, Buddy Connolly: Secretary-Treasurer, Galen Hines. Bernita Ward moved away soon after school began. In Octoberfthe Sophomores gave the Freshmen an initiation party. Later' a return party was given to the Sophomores. The members of this class are well represented in Basketball, Baseball, F. F.A., Home Economics, Glee Club, and Band. During the year Nlelva Counselman entered the class making 29 members. The class was entertained at an initiation party given by the Sopho- mores on October 1. The Freshmen returned this with a party in honor of Sadie Hawkins Day, on November 16. They are well represented in the band, glee club, mixed chorus, F.F.A., Home Economics, baseball, and basketball. ACTIVITIES MCCLUREAN OUR COACH Mr. Alspaugh offered his services to the school. Being an outstanding athlete himself, he has been in- terested in school athletics. We, the students and teams, appreciate Mr. Alspaugh's helpful directions and counsel, that have made our athletic record one of which our school is proud. MCCLUREAN VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM With our new coach, John Alspaugh, we had a very successful year. We lost several games, but enjoyed the sportsmanship shown by all the TGHINS. We won 11 games and lost 12, but outscored our opponents 759 to 670 points. Houser was high point man for the season with Farison and Ballmer close behind. The boys went to the tournament to do their very best, and were rewarded for their efforts by taking third place. They received the tourna- ment basketball as an award. Because of their fine success, the boys held a banquet Friday, March 10, at the School Building, at which time the basketball letters were given out. The boys regret losing the following players through graduation: Ralph Knepley, Bob McClure, and Richard Baker. He was all over the floor and played a good defensive and offensive game. He always kept calm and came through when we were in tight places. He held the guard position. Robert Ballmer- Bob played a good game all year and never gave up. He played at forward and was one of the big helps on the scoring. He played a great defensive game. He is only a Sophomore and he will be a big help for the next two years. Eldon Alspaugh- Eldie played at guard position. Although he wasn't so fast he still helped out with his long shots and good pass work. Galen Houser- Hub was the high point man for the year and could put the ball in from any place on the floor. He played forward and was good at breaking up plays and going in for sucker shots. Being only a Sophomore, he will be a valuable player for two more years. Ralph Knepley- Buck played center this year and although he did not help on the scoring so much, he helped feed the boys who did do the scoring. He played a great defensive game all through the year and got the ball off the back board. He will be missed next year. Murrel Allen- Frankie is small but mighty. He was the boy who saw a lot of action. He had to play both Varsity and Reserve games many times. He played guard or forward and handled either position very well. He will be a big help for next year's team. Robert McClure- Bob is a Senior. He played the center or guard position very well. He will be missed for next year's team. Richard Baker- Dick is another Senior who will be missed next year. He played at forward position and helped out a lot in the tight places. Bud Connolly- Bud played forward position and was a big help this year and will be for two more years. He is a good shot and plays a good floor game. GIRLS' GLEE CLUB Th Girls' Glee Club started out the year with an enrollment of 43 members and ended with an enrollment of 42 members. On March 31, a group from the club participated in the Henry County Music Festival at Holgate. Now as we seniors are about to leave the school, we wish to thank Miss Hibler for her efforts to make us more musical. Seventh and Eighth Grade Chorus The seventh and eighth grade chorus was organized this year with an enrollment of 38. They sang for the Christmas program, P.T.A. meetings, and also for their local entertainment. We feel that they have achieved much on their road to success. V-ks. The foundation on which the Future Farmers of America organization is built, includes leadership, character development, sportsmanship, co- operation, service, thrift, scholarship, improved agriculture, organized recre- ation, citizenship, and patriotism. Our F.F.A. has taken up several co-operative enterprises this year, a chain gilt project and a junk drive. This year we put gilts out with James Shaffer, Glen Good, and Bud Connolly. Two of these gilts are Berkshires and one Chester White. In this junk drive we collected 13 tons of scrap metal. Besides helping the war effort this scrap increased our treasury S79. The F.F.A. has also taken second place in the district Parliamentary Procedure Contest. We also took third place in a contest sponsored by Sears Roebuck 84 Co. Our F.F.A. took the S20 award for second place at the County Fair on our Booth exhibit, which centered around our contributions to the War effort. Although the organization does not hold regular meetings, they are always ready to help the band in every way. Pins were presented to the Senior Members of the Band by the Mothers. P. T. A. For the school year of 1943 -44 the Parent Teachers' Association elected the following officers: B. E. Snider, President: F. J. They planned many fine programs for the year. They secured many interesting speakers and had fine musical numbers. The officers wish to thank everyone who co-operated in making this P.T.A. year a success. MCCLUREAN LIBRARY The people of McClure Village and McClure School should be very proud of the Public Library which is located in the basement of the school building. The following statement was made by the Librarian in regard to the Library and her opinion of it. The past year has been a very successful one. The helpfulness and courtesy of both the teachers and the pupils has been very gratifying to me. CHEER LEADERS During the basketball season we played 18 games and our cheerleaders faithfully attended every game. We won more games this year then we have for quite sometime but of those we lost the cheerleaders and the cheer- ing section backed the boys to the finish. We were well represented at the out-of-town games as well as those played at home and this always gives the boys more reason to fight. We all thank Marilyn, Donna, and Betty for their fine job and we are very sorry to lose Marilyn at graduation but we'll try and replace her with someone who has as much, pep, and sportsmanship as she has shown us in the last four years. SCHOOL PERSONNEL Mr. John Alspaugh is a versatile man. He has given our school athletics a boost by acting as our coach. We have had a very successful year. Along with that work, he has kept the building clean and heated. We are grateful to Mr. Alspaugh for his splendid cooperation and advice. Mrs. Ruth Adams for the whole school year, and Mrs. Lillian Seekamp, for part of the school year, have given us splendid meals in our cafeteria.
