Basketball Baselmall li. A. A. ERSONNE THF SUPERINTFNDENT Klr. Knight has been in Rlcflure only this past year. Before coming here he taught at the Portage Township Schools for ten years. His first three years of teaching were under the positition of principal and since that time he served as sup- erintendent. He has taught agriculture, sciences, industrial arts and mathematics. Mr. Knight teaches mathematics at Nlcflure. During his college days Mr. Knight was a member of the Five Brother Fraternity at Bowling Green State University. There he received a Bachelor of Science degree and at Ohio State University he received a Master of Arts degree. Everyone finds the superintendent is easy to become acquainted with and his friendship will be remembered and enioved bv everv student. Mr. Knight has a fine sense of humor and is interested in all types of activity. He is an honorary member of the Damascus Chapter of the F. F. A. Mr, Knight tries hard to understand each of the students in school and gladly lends helpful advice whenever students consult him concerning their problems. .AA -vVvvvxxAAAfvxAfx f- THE BOARD OF EDUCATION Only when a school has a friendly and cooperative Board of Education can a school run to its highest capacity. Only then can the students get a full and rounded out education. Four memlwers tiring of school life, dropped out.. Une other, Lee Shanower, was compelled to leave school on account of illness. They, accomplished and learned seniors, are altly represented in the hand, glee clulus, ltasketlaall, liaselwall, lf. F. A., and in the Home Economics Clulm. llorothy Kietier, one of the most illustrious of the class has won the County Scholar- ship Test in Latin for two consecutive years and also placed second in the general scholar- ship test for seniors in the county. Another senior, Richard VYatkins, won the Tulia Contest at the Northwestern Ohio Solo and linsemlwle Contest. lluriit the year the class has sponsored roller skating parties, a lnake sale and has faithfully published the Newsette. the school newspaper. As usual, the graduation pictures were taken at Liringstoifs with much diversified fun-makin,q ensuing. College Daze , the class play, was presented April lS. On May 3. the juniors entertained the seniors at the annual -I unior-Senior Banquet. Baccalaureate was held at the high school auditorium May 18, with Reverend Benton the Methodist minister officiating. Graduation exercises were held in the auditorium May 22. McClure, Ohio July 6, 1961 Dear james Smith: I am very sorry that you and lune were unable to attend the Fourth of Iuly celebration at the home of lunior and Esther Hull. I imagine your iob as ambassador to Mars does keep you busy and if it's as tiresome as my iob of being a movie producer is, I know you'll want to hear about some of our antics at the party. Junior had things nicely arranged for an exciting time and after the fun started it never stopped until the last guest left his farm. The table legs had been sawed nearly in two and when the great letdown came Neomia, Bernieda, and Marilyn, the society sisters, had hot noodle soup spilled in their laps. No picnic at Iunior's would be complete without someone sitting on his bench charged with electricity. On this occasion it happened to be bachelor Roland Glanz and that old maid Marccil VViemer who received the shock. Lloyd Kane of the F. B. I. Eot to snooping a wee bit too much and had to be fished out of the pool bv Kate C. the outdoor sports girl. She didn't know what kind of bait to use at first but a piece of chocolate cake from the Alspaugh Baking Company proved to be eliective. William lohnson, the greatest scientist, had some of his greatest and latest fireworks with him and had a lot of fun showing Beatrice S.. Dorothy K., Marcile C., and Dorothy P., the Sunshine Sisters Quartette iust how they worked. Everything was popping along fine and dandy until his wife Phyllis A. hung onto a sky-rocket and made two complete circles around the silo. Paul Finger and Willis Croninger, the two presidential candidates, were giving fife- side chats all afternoon and even their wives Alice and Ila Rose took part in the arguing. Things kept moving nicely all afternoon but in the evening they quiled down a little and everyone enjoyed the line music by james Kieffer and his orchestr. Several members of our class were found here, with joe Flowers tickling the piano keys, Charlotte Mowrey swinging the drum sticks, and Elaine Fryman warbling all the new song hits of the day. The mixed chorus has participated i11 many programs this year. :Xt Thanksgiving a Concert was given. L'hristmas hrought a heautiful Christmas service after which the chorus entertained families around low11 with heautiful Christmas carols. XYith the dawn of Spring a Concert was given that hrought Spring i11 witl1 a smile. As was the custom an operelta was given in April. The operetta, Top of the NX'orld , took the audience to the Grand Canyon for an evening of thrills with rohhers, kidnapping, heartache and laughter. The mixed chorus rounded out their program for the year hy lending their voices to the Baccalaureate Services. The BAND has twenty-four members this year. From this group of twenty-four five will graduate, Mareeil XN'iemer, Neomia Hines, Marilyn Miller, Kathleen Vhamberlin, and Richard Watkins. The band has made several important appearances this year. The first was a com- plete band concert given in October. Throughout the winter months the band has added new pep and enthusiasm to the athletic contests. ln April at the County Festival held in Liberty Center, the band was ably represented. The baud has been under the direction of Mr. Salvo for the past two years. Their energetic pep and lmuhlmling personalities, which in turn represent Mclilure High School, are arlmirerl hy everyone. llilllllllt' .-Xlspzlugh The McClure VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM of 1940-41 did not enjoy a very successful year, winning only three games, and losing thirteen, but it was successful in that each player showed sportsmanship and courage at all times. The team was handi- capped -in size when compared to most of its rivals. At times the boys showed that they were able to break a larger team's defense and that they had the ability to score. The team had been defeated in almost all of the scheduled games, but all the team's fans were proud of the fact that the team was in the semi-finals of the tournament, after a hard-fought battle in which Florida was defeated 36 to 34. Robert Smith, graduate and former varsity basketball player of Bowling Green State University coached the team. The Henry County Basketball tournament was held at the McClure High School gymnasium this year. The nrst games of the varsity and reserve tournament were played on the 20th and Zlst of February. The semi-finals were played February 28 and the finals were' played on March 1. All games were in the evening, although fans began to arrive by mid afternoon. The championship of the county was taken for the second consecutive year by the Holgate Tigers. Malinta-Grelton was runners-up. Trophies were presented to the winning teams by the superintendent of Mcflure, Mr. T. VV. Knight. Although the building is small, the tournament attracted 2200 faithful basketball fans.
