This twelfth edition of the lVlcClurean. we respectfully dedicate to the spirit of progress in our community. brought about by those who have made possible the new addition to our school building. To them we wish to express our gratitude for the long- needed auditorium and for the new courses added to our cur- riculum. ,i .ia .4 wc, o X Q f .Q 9 se .:... asm K GFQESS ' May this spirit of progress continue to grow, not only around our school, but in the entire community, bringing more and more advantages to our younger generation. We wish to thank the advertisers and subscribers, who have made this book possible, and the school faculty, espec- ially our advisor, P. E. Teegardin, for the help given us in the publication of this annual. i diva' , . 'La U U! H nw. F 1 g I' ' PROGRESS I SCI-IGOL BUILDINGS From the time that Jacob Love iirst organized a high school in this community down until the present, there has been continued pro- gress in school building construction. At first, the school in the upper story of a business building, then the old frame building followed by a modern brick building built in 1914. Now we have a new and modern classroom auditorium addition to the old brick building. A school, the same as churches and other community organiza- tions must haveactive interest and real spirit behind it. As this new building rose higher and higher our ideals rose with it until today it stands as a monument to the progressive thought and spirit of this community. Today we can enjoy its benefits and know that it will be one of the best mediums through which our community will win its place in the World. 'ia I PROGRESS I TRANSPORTATIO This is a progressive world. Yesterday school children walked comparatively short distances to the one room school. Today they ride longer distances to the multi-room consolidated school. Methods of transportation have kept pace with progress. Only a few years ago pupils came to school in horse drawn wagons. Today pupils ride in powerful all steel busses equipped with devices to insure safety to the passengers. Four large busses, with a capacity of fifty or more pupils from the school district surrounding McClure transport 190 pupils to and from school each day. These busses also serve as a means of trans- portation to ball games. music contests and skating parties. The drivers of the busses this year are Sherman Dielman. Ernest Bohling, Dura Reimund and Paul Clauson. iv .,,e ,, , ,. ,, ., ., V ,. ,. T W l , f Q A A J. A. Rudcr Gail Mcfilurc Gertrude Chamberlin Otto Miller Harvey Harman . Board of Education . I wonder if she knows the fun In many lives she's sowing. Lillie Boyd She seems to be successful In things she plans to do, And if you do not like her Theres something wrong with you. Robert Chamberlin He answers from most anyone Who calls him Pete or Al. And if you want a friend I-lc's there to be your pal. Edna Duquette I-Iere's a girl you can tease just all you want But always expect a reply, She may just blush-but she can laugh You can tell by the gleam in her eye. Ruth Houser Ruth I can see as an artist Painting beautiful dreams. I wish I could copy her laughter And catch her brown eyes when they gleam. Zelma Jennings Just a small but mighty person Is this classmate friend of mine. I like her many quiet ways +And manners that are kind. Ruth Jennings This classmate holds an excited nature And life for her is thrills, She has a way of saying things And wearing pretty frills. Norma Klein .lust cease from looking elsewhere And look at her awhile. You soon discover a quiet nature Burst into a pretty smile. Robert Miller I-Ie's here and he's there And always polite. And when others are wrong I-Ie's usually right. YGU WILL KNOW THEM Maxine Miller She's somewhat shy but friendly, She's Winsome in her ways. I'll bet she'll reach her aim in life If her studiousness stays. Jackaline Mooiney It's this girl's aim to love the life That's colorful and free, At least that is the way it seems To always appear to me. Marvin Peery There's never tears when he's around. He's hardly ever sober, And if your thoughts run not his way He'll always win you over. Louise Ruder I like to think this girl dramatic And act in glamorous plays. Shed fill the eyes of big producers And win admirers' praise. Norma Smith Her ambition rules her every thought. I hope for her she succeeds: If she can this nation waits for her And her help is sincerely in need. John Wenzel Where this friend gets his sunny laugh And all that manly height, Is more than I can understand But I guess he's all right. Delores Wilcox Shall we call her hair auburn or just call it red. Shall we call her ways dreamy or Wise? For the life of me I can't Hgure it out And who can deserves a prize. Berneita Willams I-Iere's one girl I just can't Hnd The proper kind of expression: She's sometimes shy and sometimes gay But anyhow makes an impression. Senior Class Prophecy i It is the year l970 and We Hnd ourselves in the lobby of the great Monte gomery Hotel in Mimai, Florida. It is the year of the great Miami Wor1d's Fair and Mrs. Montgomery, the former Delores Wilcox, and her husband are look- ing forward to a great crowd of guests. On the opening date of the fair a very distinguished person registers as Miss Maxine Ballmer, Henry County Superintendent of Schools. She asks the where- abouts of Mrs. Delores Montgomery and explains they were once schoolmates. She also explains that other old classmates are planning on stopping at this hotel to attend the Exposition. At this very moment a certain prominent couple in the field of science enter the elaborate hotel. They are Mr. John Wenzel and his wife, the former Maxine Miller. They are the owners of the world famous Wenzel Laboratories. While these people are renewing their old acquaintances they are astonished by the appearance of a well dressed gentleman and his secretary. Mr. Robert Miller, the president of the largest bank in the United States, tips his high silk hat and smiles, while his faithful secretary, Miss Edna Duquette, gasps with surprise as she notices the others. Everyone is happy and the clerk at the desk nods pleasantly as a beautiful young lady from Hollywood comes forward. She is none other than the actress Rita Rave. Directly following her and trying in many ways to attract her at- tention is the nationally known radio announcer, Marvin Peery. Mrs. Montgomery greets her guests and immediately begins to plan for a banquet in the evening. She sincerely wishes that all of the class of '39 could be there. Later that afternoon she is talking to dear old Maxie and explains that more people have arrived, and that they are all married. She coi1ldn't remember their names, but they were in the lobby discussing their family problems. Ruth Jennings. Norma Klein and Berneita Williams are all living .around McClure. Jackaline, however, married a man from somewhere around Lima, Ohio, and settled there. Mrs. Montgomery also said Rita Raye, the actress, was really Louise Ruder. And, oh yes, Mrs. Woodward who just arrived from Columbus, Ohio. is our old red head, Zelma Jennings. At seven o'clock that evening a large banquet is spread. Seated around the table are all of our members save Robert Chamberlin. Ruth Houser. Norma Smith, and Lillie Boyd. Where are they? Music is heard and someone exclaims, Why theres Mr. Kaufman, our old teacher, leading a swing band, and look at his drummer, Ruth Houserl The excitement overcomes our lovely actress Rita. and as she sways from her chair a white clad figure rushes forward. Can we believe our eyes-it is Norma Smith! Soon cheerful noises are heard outside the door and Robert Chamberlin and Lillie Boyd walk in. Lillie refuses to tell if she's married. However. that is a small matter compared with Pete. He is a big man-weight. 300 pounds. What a banquet and what a reunion! In its characters are mirrored the last days of adolescence. Any one who saw the play emerged with a better under- standing of youth and a fuller measure of love and devotion for the young people around them. Miss Hatcher and Mr. Aiken directed the play. It takes place in the country garden of Mr. and Mrs. Meadows, who are anxious to have their daughter Miranda win the prize. Mrs. Coleman, who conducts the play is accompanied by her children Bar- bara and Bob, Among the contestants is an orphan girl Sunbonnet Sue, whose foster parents will not allow her to enter the contest. Sue meets Barbara and Bob Coleman who decide to help her. Barbara loans her suitable clothes and adds Sue's name to her mother's list. Sue easily wins the con- test and also the heart of Bob Coleman. Later, the constable, Mr. McSpavin finds that Sue owns a lot in Los Angeles, which proves to be of immense value. 4531333 THE CAST Miranda, Mrs. Meadows daughter Mrs. Meadows, President of the music club Luella Lumpton, Village maiden Hiram Meadows, Kindly farmer Evaline, Mrs. Scrogg's daughter Reuben, Constables son - Ezra McSpavin, Constable Mrs. Coleman, Patron of music Bob Coleman, Her son - Barbara Coleman, Her daughter Jerry Jackson, Bob's chum Susan Clifton, Sunbonnet Girl Mrs. Scroggs, Abijah's wife Abijah Scroggs, Sue's guardian Sadie Simpkins, Village maiden - Betty Conn Jean Brown - - Marilyn Miller Robert Neilson Maxine Ballmer Lewis Tippin Willis Shaneyfelt Delores Wilcox Hilmar Johnson Maxine Miller Bernard Pittman Lillie Boyd Ruth Jennings Joe Roach - - - Neomiia Hines Chorus of villagelboys and girls The Newsette , Commencement 1939 Processional Invocation Salutatory Vocal Duet Class History Miss Hatcher Rev. Guest Somebody said that it couldn't be done, But he With a chuckle replied That maybe it couldn't, but he would be one Who Wouldn't say so 'till he'd tried. So he buckled right in With the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed: Oh, you'll never do that, At least no one ever has done it g But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, And the first thing We knew he'd begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure: There are thousands to point to you one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and go to it 5 Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing That cannot be done, and you'll do it. 1 From The Path to Home.
