The township high school was organized in the fall of 1903, and the upper floor of the building now occupied by the Gem Theater was the opening place of the school. Mr. Jacob Love, now of Clyde, Ohio, conducted an entrance examination and about 30 boys and girls were found to be qualified to enter the high school. The first class to be graduated consisted of three persons. Since that time 255 students have gone from the school, many of them are today holding positions of honor and trust. About 20 of the 80 students of the last six classes have attended institutions of higher learning. About 1904 the high school was moved to the new frame build- ing at the south end of town. This building is now doing barn duty on the farm of Mr. Hefflinger north of town. After much discussion and a few bond issue attempts, a bond issue carried in 1914, for 535,000 and the present structure was erected in 1915. The building is shown on page four of this book. It is now housing the children formerly taken care of in the nine district schools, excepting those now going from the township to Grand Rapids and Malinta. Four grade teachers are now caring for the children, with the exceptions noted above, that nine teachers taught in the nine rural schools. , The second floor of the present building is used by the eight grades, there being four recitation rooms and a rest room. The assembly, two recitation rooms, library and oflice are on the first floor. A basement room is used for manual training. McClure corporation, according to the census man, lost two per- sons in the past 10 years, the population now is 431. Damacus township had a population of 1,513 in 1920, while now it has a population of l,357. Damascus township had a popu- lation of 489 in 1840. The school district last year had a school population of about 290, while about 250 of this number were in school. The valuation of the school district is S2,850,000. Nearly all the action of the play takes place at the Zeta house, which is a popular gathering place for the students. The leading female parts are played by the Junior girls. A Junior boy, as well as some Freshman girls had to be borrowed to complete the cast. The good ship McClure High had not gone far on the voyage before it was found that the Freshmen class was necessary to the success of the undertaking. In taking our bearings we failed to ind colors, motto, or flower: nevertheless, we elected oflicers as follows: Doyle Good, presi- dent: Royce Steiger, vice-president: Earlma Hartsing, secretary-treasurer. After a few months of rest we came back a fairly seasoned crew and accomplished our duty of initiating the Freshmen. We placed two boys and a girl on the basketball teams. We were also represented in the orchestra. We carried the same crew of officers, but in taking our bearings could not sound deep enough to iind colors or motto. In the fall of 1928 we again found ourselves at the wharf, a sturdy seasoned crew. At the helm were: Donald Shepard, president: George Nelson, vice-president: Harold Rettig, secretary- treasurer. Five boys made the basketball teams. We sounded deep enough and brought up Impossible is Un-American for our class motto. The big event of the year was the Junior- Senior banquet. The remaining girl in the class decided to change captains and embarked on another vessel, Matrimony. Some others of the crew became seasick before the end of the year, and left us at the lirst port. A staunch little crew of six was ready to sail the unknown in the fall of 1929, but on embarking, the number was increased to seven by a new recruit from Milton Center. And now as we disembark we entrust to our fellow voyagers, our beloved old craft, McClure High, hoping they will have blue skies, fair weather, and a safe voyage. 1945 CLASS WILL Be it known that we, the Senior Class, being of sound mind and good judgment, and realizing that our life in McClure High School is drawing to a close, do now on this first day of May, 1930, hereby execute, declare, and ordain this to be our last will and testament. ARTICLE I To the faculty we bequeath all of the trouble and joys of producing a class eflicient to fill the vacancy left by us. ARTICLE II To the Junior class we bequeath our athletic ability. To the Sophomores we bequeath our manner of disagreeing on all subjects. To the Freshman class we will a book entitled, How to Acquire Knowledge . Several of our members participated in various school activi- ties. Two boys and one girl found places on the basketball teams. In our Sophomore year our class was saddened by the death of Darwin Clark. Again we took part in various school activities. Three girls taking part in the Senior class play: two boys and three girls making the first basketball teams. As Juniors we are maintaining the high record of the past two years, with thirteen in number. Our two boys and three girls were found to be essential to the basketball teams. We are looking forward to a great Junior-Senior ban- quet. We were called on to help with the Senior class play again this year. Here's hoping our numbers never grow less and we may show the magic of the number thirteen. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY We are the class with the varied history, even though our high school life has been short. As We entered the portals of learning as Freshmen we were met and shown to our seats by three, who were to introduce us to the mysteries of Fresh- men, as they had had a year of training. Our number of nine girls and twelve boys was thus increased to twenty-four. Class officers were: Ralph Conn, presi- dent: Wilma Austermiller, vice-president: Dorcas McCurdy, secretary-treasurer. Some of our number hitched their wagon to a star, but the tongue must have broken. When we met as Sophomores in 1929, to take our seats in the sec- ond row, only I4 were there. One of this number came to us from another school. Of those we lost, three went to other schools: some remained to show the new Freshmen around: others completed their school career. Officers for the year were: Ralph Conn, president: Norris Houser, vice-president: Dorcas McCurdy, secretary-treasurer. We have a promising cornet player, five boy basketball players, three star girls basketball players. What more for our varied class next year? We started in last fall so green. The dumbest Freshies ever seen. We whispered and laughed the time away. From nine until four day after day. We thought, What's the use to study all the time? To be just a Freshie is not such a crime. We all must be Freshmen before we are through: We must not feel vain as the Sophomores do. Next year we may learn a little more And We'll each with pride be a Sophomore. And We'll work veryehard until we succeed: Next year's Sophomores will sure take the lead. They'll be lirst in baseball and basketball too: Also in their studies we all shall find true. Then to the Junior class we'll rise And hold our glories to the skies. From then to the Senior class We'll go And learn almost all there is to know. FERN AND DoRoTHY. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY In September, 1929, twenty-four students entered McClure High School as Freshmen. We were heartily welcomed by last year's left over Freshmen. How- ard Fitch from Grand Rapids came in the class in October, thus making the class enrollment of twenty-seven. Shortly after school started, the greenies of the year before, now Sopho- mores, attempted to initate us and only succeeded with the help of the other classmen. To ally our humility the Sophmores gave us a party. We responded with a return party at the home of Lois Reimund. Three of our girls made the basketball team. Two of our number are found in the orchestra. As we are now going, we predict great things even though three of our number recently quit school, having become sixteen years of age. He maketh me to work hard problems: and exposeth my ignorance to the class. He bringeth forth my tears: he causeth me to learn axioms for my grade's sake. Yea, though I study from nine to four, I catch not the drift: for problems and definitions bother me. He prepareth hard lessons for me in the presence of my classmatesz he flunketh me completely: mine eyes run over abundantly. Surely I shall dwell in the algebra class forever and ever for I don't seem to be getting out very fast. THE ERESHMAN' S PRAYER Now I lay me down to rest, I studied hard to do my best: If I should die before I wake I won't have any exams to take.
