Ossip and rumors What did The National Enquirer, lan- guage, and “‘Joe’s girlfriend” all have in common? Gossip! This favorite pastime was started long ago and is still going strong. Someone or something was always the object of con- versation, but, as Wendy Hamilton, sen- ior, said “It’s funny only until it’s about yourself.” Students passed time by telling the juicy tales of the day. Judy Thompson, senior, said, “You can find out who likes who, what’s going on over the weekend, and other things like that.’”’ Who could ask for more? Roy Booze, senior, would. He said gossip is ‘when people go around sayin’ hear- say about things.” “And even if people aren't sure about something, they'll spread rumors so they can fit in with a crowd, start a fight, or get friends to Brian Burton Il Karen Burton Il Tonia Busse IO Bob Butts Il Suzanne Cadamey Il : Pat Cahalin 10 Laura Caldwell 10 yoo s ¥ Tom Cambron 10 Chris Campbell 9 Theresa Campbell 10 Jennie Canterbery 10 Dave Canupp Il Dianna Capps Il Keesha Carey Il Kathy Carlson 10 Cathy Carmichael 9 Bob Carpenter 10 Cheryl Carr 10 Dana Carrol 9 Don Carter 10 Michele Carter 9 Julie Casals 9 Kimberly Castello 10 Jack Causey Il Kevin Causey 10 Brett Chambers II Sherri Chandler 10 Laya Chappel 9 Byron Chastian 10 Sonja Cherry 9 Laurie Christan 10 Dave Christensen IO Gary Christensen Il Connie Christian 10 Tony Christian 9 gang up on or dislike somebody, said Ka- ren Cook, senior. Tracey Wachter, sen- ior, said “gossip is one thing — rumors is another!” Latanya Griffin, senior, said, “Rumors just make you look big to other persons, but then it gets back to you later.” Anywhere large groups of people gather, friends and strangers tried to “cut the ice” with a witty phrase, which was most commonly refered to as the latest gossip. Teachers may not have thought it was so harmless, especially if you were sustain- ing a muffled drone in the ba ck of the class while they were speaking. Students at MN often made every moment “social hour”’. Many students felt the same. Mary Ah- lert, senior, said “I like gossip to a certain extent, everyone does. It makes school less boring!” But not in class. sore Covering her mouth to hide her words from others Erica Bremerkamp, junior, tells Carol Hoolan a se- cret. 96 Underclass
