' li GirI's Gymnastics Gains Confidence Belonging to a gymnastics team is different from belonging to most sports teams. When the time comes, the competitor stands alone. There are no team mates to help her with the difficult moves: they can only stand by to wait and watch, silently coaching her while as- sorted thoughts run through her mind. You really worry about your appearance and what the judges and spectators are thinking, says Cindy Pavlovits, Senior division floor exer- cise competitor. You also worry alot about smil- ing. Smiling, though it sounds like a very small mat- ter, is really important. Judges judge not only the girl's skill and performance of the routine but also her appearance. Nervousness, besides appearance, is another thing the girl's must worry about. Ms. Sylvia Stancick, the girl's coach, says this can eventual- ly be overcome, though. Experience is the best way, she says. At our first meet Can away meetb, I had girls in their first year of competition crying because the equipment was different. lt's something that's common and with more meets, the girls get less nervous. lt's something they have to work out themselves. Something that is caused by nervousness is forgetlulness, l worry about doing it right, laughs Sue Ahorn, another Senior division floor exercise competitor, Little mistakes can ruin you and can make a difference between a blue ribbon ffirst placej and a red ribbon Csecond placelf' Kimn Kohrman, a junior, agrees saying I feel like 50 hours of practice has gone to waste. You feel like you've let yourself and your team mates down. Some, like Marsha Hodges, just get mad and work harder. All the girl's work hard, but especially after a bad meet. They understand that's the only way to improve and it seems to be paying off. I feel good for the girls when they win, says Ms. Stancick and all the girls feel happy about it also. Sue feels the same though, win or lose. t'l feel like eating! she laughs. Working with Sue and Cindy on floor exercise in senior division is Karen Taylor. ln junior divi- sion, Marsha and Kimn work with Sue Politte and Debbie Wessel, who both work on uneven parallel bars. rmmmwn ' Row 1 QL To RJ Sue Pender Debbie Wessel Row 2: Laura Jacobson, Sue Politte, Row 3: Terry Fogerty, Cindy Pavlovits, Row 4: Sue Ahorn, Marsha Hodges Kim Korman Row 5 Karen Taylor Donna Howe, Laura Clasby, Cindy Hale.
