Hansel ondC3reteI Hansel and Gretel ls not a traditional high school produc- tion. It is one that is steered away from high school students and guided towards children, little kids who still believe in witches and the Sandman. With this in mind, one can determine that this year's fall play was successful. The brothers and sisters of McCluer students received the play with enthusiasm and were glued to their seats from the opening line to when Witch Wicked was popped into the oven. From a different point of view, the play was not so successful because it did not attract the attendance of a high school audience. Basically, the only students that attended the play were those who brought younger children. Paul Brown and Carolyn Harrison did an excellent iob of bringing the two storybook characters of Hansel and Gretel to life. Paul did a fine iob of acting as he portrayed a mature little boy, protecting his sister from their Stepmother and the evil witch. Carolyn displayed her talents by adding to the shy and innocent role of Gretel and singing a soft duet. The small children in the audience were amazed by the gruesome appearance of Witch Wicked, nortraved by Toni Smith. Toni kept the character alive by cackling her lines ef- fectively. lt seemed that any moment she would pull a bat out of her pointed black hat. Greedy, lazy Fritz played by Dave Wood, the clumsiness of Helga, played by Charlotte Cochran and the childishness of Catherine, played by Kathy Moffitt, spread humor throughout the fairy tale. Kathy KohIer's fine portrayal of white cat added a nlce touch to the fantasy. l ,
