The 200th birthday of America. McCluer is par- ticipating in the celebration by working on various activities and projects. Near the beginning ofthe year, McCluer held the Bicentennial Flag Raising, with Mike Wakeland as master of ceremonies. The needle art classes worked on an embroidered eagle. Jim Downey, a Senior, has been writing Broadside, the McCluer Bicentennial paper. Many activities at McCluer re- volved around the Bicentennial. The Spring Play, for instance, was A Salute To the American Theatre which was an illustrated review of the American theatre from the landing of the Pilgrims to the present day. The Social Studies department worked on the Kiosk, a large spool-like structure which contained pictures of Bicentennial events all over the country. ln the music de- partment, a Bicentennial concert was presented which con- tained American songs. The Iibrarian in the Bicentennial cos- tume, the M-3 Lobby Bi-State Bulletin Board, and the other displays around McCluer are making 1976 a year to remem- ber. These events are special because they might have been something that involved alot of time and effort and are at last completed, or maybe an important goal is finally achieved. It could possibly be that an exciting experience has occured. For the people who put forth the effort or achieved the goal or had the exciting experience it is naturally important thus making it special for them. Everyone in his or her daily life has special events but usually the only one who recognizes it as being special is the person involved, and it is always disappointing to be unable to completely share an important event with someone. The reason for caring about other people's special events is pure but honest consideration. Consideration of how the person will react to actually being able to share an important happening and consideration of how it would feel being able to share a special event with someone else, This section of the Yearbook is put in to show our consideration of the people on this school who are involved. We regret that we can not recognize everyone's special events . C GJ overs Tal SC Di S9 U YO 8 i 1 I ' I ' ' .exile Pots Are Out Of The Kiln Scalpel titches, . . . + X x 4 I .-, . November 15th turned out to be a beautiful day starting with a colorful parade. The winning float was cre- ated by Senior Committee. Follow- ing the parade was the last football game of the season, against St. Charles. We were victorious defeat- ing the Pirates 14-6. The highlight of Homecoming was the dance which was held in the M-4 gym. The theme of the dance was Saturaday in the Park , and the band was Bob Kuban's Everyday People . At the dance Mary Lunatto was crowned queen by retiring queen Molly Pope. All in all the even- ing was very successful and memo- rable. .. Homecoming . . .Homecoming . . . Homecoming ... Homecoming. .. Homecoming. .. Homecoming . .. Homooomiog H, Hgmecgming Hansel ondC3reteI Hansel and Gretel ls not a traditional high school produc- tion. It is one that is steered away from high school students and guided towards children, little kids who still believe in witches and the Sandman. With this in mind, one can determine that this year's fall play was successful. The brothers and sisters of McCluer students received the play with enthusiasm and were glued to their seats from the opening line to when Witch Wicked was popped into the oven. From a different point of view, the play was not so successful because it did not attract the attendance of a high school audience. Basically, the only students that attended the play were those who brought younger children. Paul Brown and Carolyn Harrison did an excellent iob of bringing the two storybook characters of Hansel and Gretel to life. Paul did a fine iob of acting as he portrayed a mature little boy, protecting his sister from their Stepmother and the evil witch. Carolyn displayed her talents by adding to the shy and innocent role of Gretel and singing a soft duet. The small children in the audience were amazed by the gruesome appearance of Witch Wicked, nortraved by Toni Smith. Toni kept the character alive by cackling her lines ef- fectively. lt seemed that any moment she would pull a bat out of her pointed black hat. Greedy, lazy Fritz played by Dave Wood, the clumsiness of Helga, played by Charlotte Cochran and the childishness of Catherine, played by Kathy Moffitt, spread humor throughout the fairy tale. Kathy KohIer's fine portrayal of white cat added a nlce touch to the fantasy. l , Es-1 ix, Fall Play Hansel And Gretel Cast Hansel .. Gretel .. Johann ,.. Frederica . . . Helga ... Fritz ..... Ac., 3'- Censorship lssue Halts Paper An interim agreement under which Mr, Bredenkamp, prin- cipal, can see and react to, but not control, articles before they are published has temporarily resolved a conflict which has delayed publication of SCOOP for two weeks. Mr. Bredenkamp had com- plained, I con't know what's going in and I have to react to it once lt's published. So I have no say so, but l'm held accountable. If l'm to be held accountable, I thlnk I deserve some feed-in, The staff of the paper held that say so over what would or would not be published lay with them, deflning their publication as a student newspaper with an obligation to accurately report situations. Parents wanted the ad- ministration to explain its position and at the parents' request a meeting was set for February 9 at 5:00 p.m. with Henry Prokop, Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education, John Wright, Assistant Superintendent for Community Relations, and Mr. Bredenkamp. About A0 parents and community members showed up at the meeting. Mr. Prokop said at the meeting, The general public wants contrcl by the ad- ministration and they want all ,inds of glowing reports about how good everything is. But Mr. Joseph Bartylek, a parent at the meeting, expressed the opinion of the maiority of parents and community present when he said, l don't think the community ls so sensitive that we have to look at everything through rose colored gIasses. The meeting lasted about two hours. By the end, most com- munity members and parents had reached a consensus that SCOOP should be a student paper run by students. At a later meeting with the newspaper staff, Mr. Prokop had acknowledged, I was the one that started the thing going February 2. That doesn't mean I wasn't getting pressure, but I was the one who started it. Mrs. Maxwell, assistant principal, was the flrst to inform the newspaper staff of the new administration approach to the paper. Although the guidelines are no longer in operation, some of the ones given by Mrs. Max- well at the time were: The school paper is con- sidered to be a form of com- munication to the community from the school and representing the district in a positive way. Those things that are con- sidered controversial, that will in a sense incite controversy must be eliminated. SCOOP should be a paper that presents as positive a point of view about McCIuer as you possibly can. On February 5 the staff of SCOOP drew up a statement reiecting the administration guidelines and prepared to make its posltlon public, In this statement SCOOP said, lt is our obiective to maintaln our constructive and honest approach to issues and events and to encourage other hlgh school papers to do likewise. We therefore cannot, in all good conscience, accept the guidelines imposed by the school and district administrators. Pressed by parents and community members at the Februarytkmeetlng with why the administration had taken its initial action, Mr. Prokop said, The purpose of thls is to give the administration a chance to see the paper before it's published. But at that meeting he refused to say whether or not censorship would be imposed it the students tried to put out a paper. The next morning Mr, Prokop and Mr. Wrlght met with the staff. It had been decided that Mr. Bredenkamp would see articles before publication, but lin Mr. Prokop's wordsl The only control he would have is the pressure of his statements. According to Mr. Wright, Until we get some guidelines that you, the central office on January and the Board of Education understand, we're going to let you go ahead and publish a paper according to your guidelines. lr my ...,...-., I ,.,,- E4 0 -sr 'W' to J ,. -foo: UM A -'cog 74'-org, ,fjvfit as 4 Q, A..,o,.9 , f wwe, , ug, M M f r Caps And Gowns MMM my 75 Measurements For The Big Day No! Foreign Exchange Tom Surlien Tom Surlien is a tall, brown- haired, blue eyed, eighteen year old Senior. He comes to McCluer as a foreign exchange student from Ask- er, Norway. He has two brothers, one older and one younger who also is an exchange student in Ohio. Tom is described as intelligent, care free, and a lover of nature. His favorite sports are skiing and soccer. He was on McCluers soccer team this year. Tom likes St. Louis but misses the beautiful scenery of Norway with its mountains, and his friends. He is deeply concerned with the environ- ment and the future in general. I Students 0 0 2, Q V'VV' ,' 1 4 1 , ff v ff AA I V If A . A , 'Q V .fly ' r 4 3 'I 3 . A .1 , , V Q fi, L W ---- ' . al GI. He is a 16 year old foreign exchange student, Paulo Adedato. His home is in Brazil. Paulo's family is quite familar with this school: his two older brothers were exchange students at McCluer in 1972 and 1975. His sister plans to attend lVlcCluer in 1978. Paulo is still adjusting to the backward way at McCluer. At school in Brazil things are alot different than they are at McCluer. For instance, the stu- dents stay in the rooms and the teachers change classes. Paulo finds most of the people at McCluer friendly but because of the language barrier he depends mostly on peoples looks and their response to his smile. When asked about his favorite things, Paulo favors soccer and bowling where sports are concerned. He is also a rock concert fan with his favorite group being YES . Paulo thinks living in St. Louis is an experience but is sure he will like it the longer he's here. 'QS 5 ,.,v ' 1 Halfway Dance ls A Success Hey man, whose pants are on the wall? Those aren't pants man, that's a poster. A Half-Way Dance. What the iWbSSctElS?4f is a Half-Way Dance? Well, it is a Dance spon- sored bythe Deca Club, to celebrate the end of half a year of school. For some of our Seniors it was their last Dance as a McCluer High School student. For everyone who attended, it was a blast, but then a few drinks and a great band, The Pockets , always makes for a good time. 43 A Salute To The American Theatre e ff E Je Bicentennial Revue A Salute to the American Theatre was a new and unique theatrical experience for the student body and the actors and actresses involved. This was the first time at NlcCluer that a teacher had written part of the play and directed it also. Snow caused cancelation of rehearsals and a slow start. Six weeks was a short time in which to put a show together. Time was spent in rehearsals Sun- day through Thursday, constant work on memorizing lines, learning song melodies and lyrics, collecting props, trying on costumes, and finally setting the lights and hav- ing dress rehearsals. The beautiful costumes seemed as though they walked right out ofthe movies and onto the M-1 stage. The mood ofthe scenes changed from drama to comedy as the play progressed. The actors, as if speaking to the audience, created a relaxed atmosphere to the audience throughout the three performances of A Salute to the American Theatre . 1. . 3 Solo Concert wi Debbie Procter Mike Tolbert Kathy Bowman Kim Hagedorn Beth Judy A Jill Klein T' nf 'Ni Fall Concert , I ' 'ik-f I Soloist I Edith Sobin, Piano Lynn Basow, Violin ' Ivy Allen, Flute McCIuer Students Give Blood E i 1. wit i if W Students Face The Big Bloody Question To give blood or not to give blood, that is the question. To be purely selfish and keep my blood or to part with this precious blood and take the chance of passing out and missing Physics and Short- hand, and dear ol' Chemistry. Devout as I am to these three won- derful subjects, I can't desert my needy countrymen. And so it was, 170 students flooded into the M-5 gym to give blood because they felt the need to help others. Also because they received free cookies, coffee, milk, or orange juice. The Bloodmo- bile Program was sponsored by Senior Committee. McCluer stu- dents gave 14O pints of blood. lt was a big increase over the pre- vious year, enough to encourage the bloodmobile to return later in the year. f Qi ,g f 3 ITIITI Like Mo -I-I GD 3 'D Band On The Move Scholars Score Spring Comes n February i 3 2 r a -1 1 .- r . . 1 r. v I rf? ,Vw 3 . , 'Q 51:43 3. Varsity Football Hits 500 The 1975 season included league and personal victories such as McCluer North and Pattonville. lt also included some humiliating losses, like Riverview and Hazelwoods Central and West. For the players it was a season of Wednesday night defen- sive meetings, and scrimmages until after dark. Injuries to key players plagues the Comets. Defensive coach, Mike Mueller, explained that the key people get hurt because, You are only important to this team when you are willing to give of yourself for that guy next to you. Through- out this season this attitude was manifested through the players actions. TY fn' ,. , 'S' aw? 'B , 1 ,.,. . They had to be an area power and a state contender. The reason it would be particularly hard was that only three starters were returning from last year's team. This year's team went into ev- ery game giving all they had, but they were inexperienced. Still this inexperience didn't keep them from playing a tough game be- cause the Comets only lost one game by more than one goal. The team was a spoiler to the rest of the league in that they did not contend, but they certainly had a say in what happened. One ofthe goals of the seniors was to give Coach Signaigo his one hundreth victory as a varsity coach, but they didn't make it. To quote one of the seniors, I wish we could have done it for him. ,QS QU!! V , Q M F., ,lL. fs ,.. f , -1 A . J ,s rf. Comets: I-270 Champs The 1975-76 McCluer Comets were a sur- prise to almost everybody - except them- selves. All anybody ever heard about the team was: They lost too many key players , They don't have any height , and I just don't think they have the talent. But there was one thing that most people overlooked, the coach believed in them, and they believed in themselves. They proved themselves by putting together an outstanding season, and by doing things on the Court that nobody thought they would ever do. The Players: Senior Matt Holliday - known as the Doc for his ability to pull out the close ones. His ability and aggressive play typified the Comets. Junior Deron Thomas -the Bones could score points from all over and proved that he was a pIayer's player. Senior Jeff Lindsey - the tooter was off and on in the beginning, but after a 40 point game, he showed his worth and desire. Senior Phil Mathis - the center Cthe position that the Comets weren't supposed to haveb. At only 6'3 , Mathis had it hard, but he got going when the going got tough. Senior Willie Jones - the shortest forward, at 6', he worked to help the team. Willie was quick and could think fast always ready for action. ,fa L 75 5' N 7 f 1,5 W if , ,,-, ia ii.. oph: Good Sports In A Tough Year . It means wanting to practice even over weekends and holidays. It means running that extra lap even after the coach says you can quit. lt means spending hours doing skill drills when you d rather scrimage. It means enduring the excruciating pains in your knee because you don't want to look on from the bench. It means alot of sweat, time, energy, and tears whether you win or lcse, Being a Comette means your toughest opponent is yourself. It means you struggle with confi- dence and spirit more than with the ball. It is learning what it means to work as a team and searching for interpersonal relationships. lt means every game is a challenge and you never win or lose till the final buzzer sounds. Being a Comette means you good naturedly swallow chauvinistic teasing. It means because of Title IX you were finally allowed to enter state competition this year. It means playing in the M-1 gym without a score board while the boys practice in M-4. Only a Comette can wear her T-shirt in the winter and not be cold. Only a Comette Views forty spectators as an enthusiastic crowd. Only a Comette finds thirty-two minutes of exhausting play the most invigorating challenge at McCluer. Girl's Gymnastics: A Growing Sport l ' li GirI's Gymnastics Gains Confidence Belonging to a gymnastics team is different from belonging to most sports teams. When the time comes, the competitor stands alone. There are no team mates to help her with the difficult moves: they can only stand by to wait and watch, silently coaching her while as- sorted thoughts run through her mind. You really worry about your appearance and what the judges and spectators are thinking, says Cindy Pavlovits, Senior division floor exer- cise competitor. You also worry alot about smil- ing. Smiling, though it sounds like a very small mat- ter, is really important. Judges judge not only the girl's skill and performance of the routine but also her appearance. Nervousness, besides appearance, is another thing the girl's must worry about. Ms. Sylvia Stancick, the girl's coach, says this can eventual- ly be overcome, though. Experience is the best way, she says. At our first meet Can away meetb, I had girls in their first year of competition crying because the equipment was different. lt's something that's common and with more meets, the girls get less nervous. lt's something they have to work out themselves. Something that is caused by nervousness is forgetlulness, l worry about doing it right, laughs Sue Ahorn, another Senior division floor exercise competitor, Little mistakes can ruin you and can make a difference between a blue ribbon ffirst placej and a red ribbon Csecond placelf' Kimn Kohrman, a junior, agrees saying I feel like 50 hours of practice has gone to waste. You feel like you've let yourself and your team mates down. Some, like Marsha Hodges, just get mad and work harder. All the girl's work hard, but especially after a bad meet. They understand that's the only way to improve and it seems to be paying off. I feel good for the girls when they win, says Ms. Stancick and all the girls feel happy about it also. Sue feels the same though, win or lose. t'l feel like eating! she laughs. Working with Sue and Cindy on floor exercise in senior division is Karen Taylor. ln junior divi- sion, Marsha and Kimn work with Sue Politte and Debbie Wessel, who both work on uneven parallel bars. rmmmwn ' Row 1 QL To RJ Sue Pender Debbie Wessel Row 2: Laura Jacobson, Sue Politte, Row 3: Terry Fogerty, Cindy Pavlovits, Row 4: Sue Ahorn, Marsha Hodges Kim Korman Row 5 Karen Taylor Donna Howe, Laura Clasby, Cindy Hale. Pep Club held a pep assembly the day the team departed. Most of the students began thei journey to Columbia on Friday afternoon but many did not know where they would be spending the night. The Comets lost the first game at Columbia and had to take a fourth place. The loss, though. did not stop the students from partying back at their hotels. As usual, the consumption of liquor was great, and so were the hangovers on Monday. To the seniors, going to state had become a year- ly event. But to the sophomores, this was a new experience which added a lot to their few memories of McCluer. Bake some cookies. Manage the store. Call a meeting. Think of another idea for the float. Arrange an assembly. Sell the pep hats and more .,. Didn't anyone tell Mr. Winscott we really tied for third place with out float? And we did call a meeting of our involved people, but there was no-one there to vote. Even though NHS meetings are a lot of fun, why can't we getmore members and the vice-president to come? Yes, Mr. Winscott is late again and what do you think of that? He's probably still at the football game, trying to peddle pep hats. I think for all our assemblies we should get Nancy Whitener's put it together band, They only require one night rehearsals and only make one night stands. And our president, Debbie Ragland, is really a fine speaker, when she stands at the podium, you can't see her knees shake from the bleachers. Who's balancing the books at the school store? Really, oh really, was Heidi Beaver's reply, t'To me all the nickels look the same size. Committee time, we need a chairman, co-chairman and members. All volunteers make yourself plain. f'Ms. President, Ms. President, this half of the room politely abstainsf' All in all, we all are so proud. That one little pin, Hremoveth all doubt. While at camp they won four blue ribbons during competition and three spirit sticks. The third night they were allowed to keep a spirit stick as one of the highest awards given. In October, they conducted a clinic at Bermuda Elementary School and judged at their cheerleading tryouts. In order to raise money they had car washes and bake sales. The money went toward camp, uniforms and the float they entered in the Homecoming Parade. They did their best to promote school spirit and had a lot of fun. We lan and prepare all activities for Homecoming, which is our big event of the year. To raise money, Pep Club members have bake sales, egg begs, car washes, etc. We decorate the M-3 Lobby with red and blue streamers and banners to recognize athletic events played at hom throughout the year. After the fun, excit- ment, and hard work of Homecoming, Pep Club has as its goal to remain an active group for the remainder of the year continuing their work on raising funds, service pro- jects, developing a new Constitutio, and promote school spirit at Winter!Spring Athletic events. Believe it or not but this teacher hasn't eaten in three days 2 fig nce upon a time . . . there was a school vilxaifffif called McCluer. Found inside the school were the usual things: freaks, jocks, teachers, desks, principals, books, and a few normal folk. A usual day started at 7:55 and ended at 2:35. An Ek 4 X unusual day also started at 7:55 and ended at 2:35. Each morn- ing the an- nouncements came over the in- tercom LOUD and LOUD Qit could be under- stood if you stood 10 miles away and spoke Yiddishj. The food in the school wasn't the best in the world: in fact there was a rumor about a pipeline running from the chemistry labs to the cafeteria. Going to the john Cusually after Iunchj was almost impossible. lf by chance you did make your way through the halls, because of the smoke you probably couldn't hit the pot if you tried. Speaking of the halls, it was said that a Swedish movie producer sent cam- era crews to do some filming at McCluer. After the school day was over the students enjoy an overcrowded, bumpy, bus ride home. Then they looked forward to an evening filled with cops, doctors, and bionic people and even managed to fit in a bit of homework during the commercials. 'f 4 . We hope you've learned a little more about McCluer. lt's been fun but now our social life is non- existent because of what we missed - many wild parties, home basketball games, hot dates and sleep. We'll remember all of the hard work we put into it when we're 40 years old and still not married. Events that we thought would last a lifetime fade away into only memories - the memories that will often be recalled, but never again repeated. In our minds those memories will be relived with the same enthusiasm as if they were real once again. Every student at McCluer will remember some event or experience. Possibly they might remember when .. . they were one of thefew students to be cho- sen for the rationed amount of parkingper- mits. ... they went back to their childhood as they sat and watched the production of Hansel and GreteI . girls in athletics had the opportunity to compete in state competition and how this first year competition brought a rewarding exper- ience of being so close, yet so far away. they goofed off in clases and paid the consequences later. . . .Christmas Vespers revealed the true spirit of Christmas. .. .
