Riding in automobiles was a luxury. But all this meant very little to a bunch of boys and girls who were to become the Class of ’55. On a clear September morning in 1942, a group of boys and girls with their faces scrubbed, ears clean, l.air brushed, and clothes spotless entered the doors of McKenzie and Harllee schools and the other schools which go to make up District One. Some of us had just turned six and others were almost seven, some were tall and some were short, some were fat and some were thin, some were laughing and some were in tears—what a bunch of kids we must have been. Who would have ever thought that that group of girls and boys would turn out to he such good-looking young men and women. At first we were wary of our teachers, but they proved to he human, and we learned to get along with them as they did with us. As the weeks and months went by, we increased our knowledge in reading, ’riting. and Yithmetic, and we slowly ascended the steps of education through the second, third, fourth, and fifth grades. School rooms were crowded when we were ready for the sixth grade. So we left grammar school and went to Junior High. Up until this time we had all been in the same grade in the same school system, hut there had been no ties which held us together. We still did not know each other too well, hut slowly and gradually through being in the same building, through association on the playground, and in the canteen, we developed a feeling of unity and class spirit. At this point we wish to express appreciation to Mr. Leitzey and the corps of teachers for their understanding and encouragement. In the junior high May Court that spring we were represented by Barbara Johnson and Frances Ann Deans as attendants. Our seventh grade attendant was Barbara Johnson. As the eighth grade we contributed our beauties Temple Wright and Barbara Lassiter to the May Court. When we reached the ninth grade, we were the oldest in a school for the first time, and we liked the feeling of importance. In the election of student body officers that fall Edward Matti-son was chosen as president and Bill Weeks as vice-president. May that spring brought May Day, of course. Temple Wright reigned as May Queen with Julia Willcox as maid or honor. Mary Alice Cusack, Mary Jane Pearce, and Arline Turner were attendants. Came the fall of 1952. Our nine years of hard work and study had prepared us for the day when we entered the halls of McClenaghan High School. Once again we put on our best, hut instead of washing their faces, this time the girls applied make-up. and as for the hoys—a few of them shaved. We were ready to take on all comers. Alas, as lowly sophomores we were quickly put in our place by the juniors and seniors. Our first official act as sophomores was to elect class officers. Bill Weeks was chosen president: Temple Wright, vice-president: Tom Mc-Cutchen, secretary: and Julia Willcox, treasurer. Our class sponsors were Miss Mary Manning Haimer and Miss Bessie Levin. In the spring we took part in the beautiful and impressive high school May Day. Our sophomore class attendants were Temple Wright, Barbara Lassiter, and Julia Willcox. When the junior year began, we were a little more important than we realized. The year started at a fast pace with the election of student lx dv officers—Temple Wright chosen as secretary-treasurer. In the class elections, Bill Weeks was again selected as president; Julia Willcox, vice-president; Tippie Foster, secretary, and Jimmy Smith, treasurer. Our class sponsors were Miss Mary Manning Hanner, Miss Novice Kirven, and Miss Betty Widener. For the first time in a number of years semester exams were again given. Exams that made the strongest of us grow weak, and the weakest of us pass out. The beginning of second semester brought a major source of junior activity—the selection of a class ring. The class voted on a ring with a blue stone and a crest. To raise money for the Junior-Senior, we juniors busied ourselves with the production of our class play, “Melody Jones.” The play was under the direction of Miss Edna Pettigrew, and those taking the leading roles were Nancy Camp-hell and Donnie Bryant. With Moulin Rouge as our theme, the dance which we gave for the Class of ’54 was a great success. During this year members of our class began taking an active part in the athletic program. We had juniors winning their letters in various sports. We finally made it. We were seniors. For years we had watched those who were older than we participating and leading in the school activities. We had seen different ones presiding at assembly, starring in athletics, serving as officers in school clubs, and setting an example for the underclassmen. As seniors, members of our class were taking these places of leadership with a sure hand. Bill Weeks served as president of the student body; Jimmy Smith, president of the senior class; Tippie Foster, editor of the Florentine: Lynwood Wade, president of Hi-Y; Rebecca Price, president of Tri-Hi-Y; Betty Jo Ballard, co-editor of the Yellow Jacket; Benny Cooke and Harry Dukes, football co-captains; Edna Calcutt, homecoming queen; Tom Mc-Cutchen, president of Key Club; Don Turner, president of Junior Exchange Club; Temple Wright. Miss High Miss; Thurman Scott, Mr. King Teen; Nancy Collins, DAR Good Citizen; Edward Mattison, vice-president of the senior class; Julia Willcox, treasurer of the senior class, and Mary Alice Cusack, business manager of the Florentine. As our first project, we launched the annual magazine subscription campaign to raise money for the publication of the annual. Selling $9,948.75 in subscriptions, the Class of '55 beat the Class of '54 and every preceding class. Helping us greatly in this campaign were the class sponsors, Mrs. Odelle Hicks, Mrs. Virginia Cheshier, and Mrs. Sarah Blanton. Under the direction of Miss Edna Pettigrew, we worked hard on the production of our class play, “Time out for Ginger.” In the May exercise Margaret Ann Matthews reigned as May Queen with Ariail Du Rant as maid of honor. Our class attendants were Ute Christensen, Dolly Bonnoitt, Mary Alice Cusack, and Barbara Hill. With the measuring of caps and gowns and the ordering of invitations for Commencement, we were conscious of our nearing graduation. Graduation now becomes more of a reality as our class participates in Class Day. The history of our class is fast coming to a close. We wish to thank Mr. McCown, the faculty, and our class sponsors for their leadership, encouragement, example, and understanding.
