History of The Class of I947 BY WALTON JEFFORDS Can you realize that the capable, cocky Seniors of 1947 were once nerv- ous, scarecl, excited youngsters who, in 1936, tremblingly entered school as nov- ices at the art? Well, those first six years of our trials and tribulations fled quickly by, until we were sure that there was absolutely nothing else that the grammar school teachers could possibly teach us! So in September of 1942, we began school again, only this time at junior High. Those first weeks were dominated by our fears of being beaten by the eighth graders, having our lunches taken away from us, being locked up in the canteen vault, and other equally ter- rifying experiences. We kept the student halls full that year and got our share of demerits and failing slips. However, justice triumphed, and the next year we were the big dogs, and wliat ex- quisite pleasure we got out of threaten- ing and frightening those poor, inno- cent little seventh graders! We were really beginning to enjoy life now, and we were again convinced there was really nothing left for us to learn. Again it was time for us to move- and this time to the place we had eagerly desired to attain for such a long time- High School. At last we could actually associate, if in a minor way, with those lordly creatureswthe older crowd. We passionate Sophomores developed nu- merous, and hopeless, crushes upon those superior beings, the Seniors, and longed for the days to come when we would no longer be the lowly worms. We elected our ofiicers: jack Hamilton, President, Alice Bultman, Vice-Presi- dent, Walton jeffords, Secretaryg Bobby Rainwater, Treasurer, and Miss Ann Gardiner, Sponsor. Our junior year arrived, and we elect- ed Walton jeffords, President, jack Hamilton, Vice-President, Alice Bult- man, Secretary, Helen jelfords, Secre- tary, and Miss Mary Manning Hanner, Sponsor. Our junior Class Play, directed by Mr. Abbott Lake, was an outstanding comedy called june Mad. Patsy Schnibben, Clarence Davis, Buena Faye Hewitt, and the rest of the talented cast were a great credit to us. Two other glamorous events glorified our junior Year: the Spring Formal and the beautiful May Day exercises. How- ever, to us, this was merely a year of anticipation-our goal was to become Dignif1ed Seniors. At last! Yes, the time had actually, and eventually, arrived. You see before you the proud and haughty class of 1947 but we were thrilled in a sad sort of way, as we realized that only too soon the year would be gone and we would be leaving. Our first ofiicial action was to elect our class officers - President, Wayne 0 13
