Miss Mary Manning Hanner fN History of The Class of I947 BY WALTON JEFFORDS Can you realize that the capable, cocky Seniors of 1947 were once nerv- ous, scarecl, excited youngsters who, in 1936, tremblingly entered school as nov- ices at the art? Well, those first six years of our trials and tribulations fled quickly by, until we were sure that there was absolutely nothing else that the grammar school teachers could possibly teach us! So in September of 1942, we began school again, only this time at junior High. Those first weeks were dominated by our fears of being beaten by the eighth graders, having our lunches taken away from us, being locked up in the canteen vault, and other equally ter- rifying experiences. We kept the student halls full that year and got our share of demerits and failing slips. However, justice triumphed, and the next year we were the big dogs, and wliat ex- quisite pleasure we got out of threaten- ing and frightening those poor, inno- cent little seventh graders! We were really beginning to enjoy life now, and we were again convinced there was really nothing left for us to learn. Again it was time for us to move- and this time to the place we had eagerly desired to attain for such a long time- High School. At last we could actually associate, if in a minor way, with those lordly creatureswthe older crowd. We passionate Sophomores developed nu- merous, and hopeless, crushes upon those superior beings, the Seniors, and longed for the days to come when we would no longer be the lowly worms. We elected our ofiicers: jack Hamilton, President, Alice Bultman, Vice-Presi- dent, Walton jeffords, Secretaryg Bobby Rainwater, Treasurer, and Miss Ann Gardiner, Sponsor. Our junior year arrived, and we elect- ed Walton jeffords, President, jack Hamilton, Vice-President, Alice Bult- man, Secretary, Helen jelfords, Secre- tary, and Miss Mary Manning Hanner, Sponsor. Our junior Class Play, directed by Mr. Abbott Lake, was an outstanding comedy called june Mad. Patsy Schnibben, Clarence Davis, Buena Faye Hewitt, and the rest of the talented cast were a great credit to us. Two other glamorous events glorified our junior Year: the Spring Formal and the beautiful May Day exercises. How- ever, to us, this was merely a year of anticipation-our goal was to become Dignif1ed Seniors. At last! Yes, the time had actually, and eventually, arrived. You see before you the proud and haughty class of 1947 but we were thrilled in a sad sort of way, as we realized that only too soon the year would be gone and we would be leaving. Our first ofiicial action was to elect our class officers - President, Wayne 0 13 14+ Brackettg Vice-President, Alice Bult- mang Secretary, Sarah Ford, Treasurer, jack Hamilton, Sponsor, Miss Hanner. Under their splendid leadership the class of 1947 has had a wonderful year. Our orator of renown, Lucy Harwell, was elected President of Student Gov- ernment, and Rosalyn Senseney was elected Vice-President. Seniors, do you remember our sensa- tional magazine campaign, under the enthusiastic leadership of Wayne Brack- ett and Loren Mead? june Short was our Super salesman, and Lottie Mae Woods was second highest. Lots of our class succeeded in becoming Honor Salesmen. Yes, our great success assured our being able to finance the kind of an annual we were determined to have. Our next matter of business was the selection of our rings, and what beauties we chose! Do you remember the mad excitement that marked their arrival, the week before the Christmas holidays? The arrival of our rings and the arrival of our annuals marked two red letter days in our lives. Our football team, captained by Ma- jor and Tommy Summerford, brought us great honor all year, and our hearts burst with pride when Lukie Brunson was judged All Southern and Major Summerford was judged All State. The Yellow jacket , under the ex- cellent leadership of Miss Brothers, Billy Gaillard, and Patsy Schnibben, continu- ed to add to their laurels by, as usual, monopolizing all the journalistic honors that are awarded! As Editor-in-Chief and Business Man- ager of the 1947 Florentine, we elected Loren Mead and Clarence Davis, re- spectively and congratulated ourselves upon our wise choices. The other mem- bers of our splendid annual staff were elected with equal confidence. From that day forward, much interest and curiosity were aroused by the mysterious activities of our hard working staff, who closeted themselves in the never-to-be-forgotten conference room and slaved away. Their theme song became Night and Day. Do you remember when every day's bulletin announced, There will be an important meeting of the annual staff after school today and Such and such a group meet out front to have your picture made i5 Ah, those were the days of blissful chaos, so dear to our hearts, when we cheerfully begged the Black- mons, George McDaniel and Bobby Fraser, to snap us in every possible pose. How we loved it! As for our May Court beauties-could we have had a more beautiful Queen and Maid of Honor than Margaret Cul- berson and Betty McDonald? Each class selected its loveliest to represent them. Representing the class of 1947 were Verida Blackwell, Mary Kemp Griffin, Anne McLaughlin, and Carolyn Fitz- gerald. There are several distinguishing fea- tures about the class of 1947. We are the last class to have been closely associated with Colonel Moore and Mr. Briggs, and the first class to be graduated under our new Superintendent, Mr. Harllee, and our new Principal, Mr. McCown. We are the last regular class to be gradu- ated under the eleven year program. We are the first class to have as our president a veteran of World War II. We are the first class since the war to be able to get rings with stones in them, and to have invitations with decklecl edges. Also, we are the . Hrst class to organize a girls' football team. You must admit that the Bobbie Sox Bowl Game, staged by those fair but ferocious damsels, was an un- usual performance, to say the least. Now, after all of our varied experi- ences, our joys and our sorrows, the hour of departure draws near, and we high and mighty Seniors find ourselves very humble and a little dismayed as we realize that the time has come for us to leave. The long awaited time, now a reality, does not seem so appealing to us. As a final token of our appreciation and love, we dedicate our 1947 Floren- tine to our teachers, whose memories we shall always cherish. With heavy hearts and fond memories, we now bring to a close the history of our class, pledging to you that as we go out into the world we shall ever strive to be worthy gradu- ates of our Alma Mater. 4 '15 wwwm? This is your ace reporter, Sandra Moore, broadcasting today from station W. O. L. S. in Flor- ence, S. C., my home town, in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the 1947 graduation class of McClenaghan High School. Today we'll take up the news concerning the members of this historic class, so--on, James! Now first with the international news. Russia and the United States are no longer at odds on any issue, as Jack Hamilton is our diplomatic Secretary of State. The perfume producer there, Her- bert Stackley, has just announced a new creation, Oo-la-la, dedicated to the graduation class of 1947. Now for the national news, and with the election over, ther's lots of it. The new president of the U. S. A. is our former school president, Lacy Harwell, and of course the first lady is Alice Bultman. In the Senate we find vice-president Vardell Gregg presiding over such wor- thy senators as Jaeger Smith, Dorothy Gerald, Billy Johnson, B. Smith, and Benny Edens. In the House of Repre- sentatives are a few more S. C. folks- Barnes Howle, James De Vane, Mary Elizabeth Middleton, Nellie Jane Boone, Welbiurn Smith, and Virginia Cox- doing their best to filibuster every bill! From New York the news comes that Mary Kemp Griffin and Buena Faye Hewitt, accompanied by Sarah Ford, have made a smashing success in their first appearance at the Metropolitan Opera House. Verida Blackwell and Betty Allen have taken to the stage in New York, while Margaret Cluberson and Ann Mc- Laughlin are both models for an ex- clusive dress shop, owned by Sam Dixon and Harry Baker. Still in New York, I find that Jeanne Moore and Jeanne Dorsey recently married prominent bro- kers and are among the 10 best-dressed women in the country. The flash came in from Wyoming that the great experimenters, George Avent and Billy Hay, have invented a plane that flies over the house and does all the housework for the ladies. The only drawback is that it won't wash dishes. San Francisco-Billy Dusenbury and Mack Poole, two Florence Hi air cadets of '47, have turned out to be world famous. They have made a number of round-the-world flights, but their latest fame has come from their upside down flight. H o l I y w o o d headliners! Wendell Gardner and Clarence Davis are both seeking Van Johnson's place in the movies. H. L. Swanson is the successor to Clark Gable. Betty McDonald is in Hollywood too, and Carolyn Fitzgerald is with her, as usual. Patsy Schnibben is the most popular Hollywood actress. Atlantic City! Jean Brittain has been elected sponsor for the Third Marine Division. Alton Taylor is the new editor of Esquire. Peggy Thornton and Edith +49 50' Hewitt gave him a great deal of help with this publication. Philadelphia! Betty Snipes is a pro- fessional ballet dancer, and her partner is Billy Campbell. The couple gives lessons in their leisure to such indus- trious people as W. Culberson, lean Hoggard, and Anne Boone. Emma jane Hyman steals many of their audience, though, because she has an ice skating show. Vivian Smith is secretary to a very rich businessman in New Orleans. Aure- lia Terry, Betty jo Flowers, and jim Kirven live in this city too, where they are working on a book together. The first volume of the book will be named Kilroy Was Here and the second volume, joe Blow! Reno! Pete Corley is making a per- manent residence thereffor six weeks. This is her fourth divorce. It's been said, There's a man for every woman, but she's beginning to doubt it. Salt Lake City, Utah! The brilliant and well known engineer, Pearlie Good- man, has joined forces with the great electrician, Bobby Graham. They are changing their work entirely, to see if they can become salt manufacturers. New Mexico! Three South Carolina girls, Marianne Bragdon, Nellie john- son, and Bobbie Irick, are now living out there with their inventor husbands. Those girls always did get around. Wayne Brackett is now a much sought after university professor. Could the fact that he teaches only co-eds account for his keen interest in his work? Texas border! Ellison Stokes, big time play boy, is almost bankrupt-he just loses too much money on stocks, blondes, and horse tips. Sports review! The golfer of the day is the brilliant doctor, Loren Mead. He's beat all records so far, with the score of 19 undar par in 18 holes. For the tennis world championship, Walton jeffords faces her opponent form Egypt, in Hong Kong, China, on Monday. It promises to be an exciting match although the experts give Walton the victory two to one. Chicago sports! The two greatest American girls' football teams meet in their annual crash next Wednesday. The teams are owned by Leonora O'Hara and Wren Summerford, the rowl and growl friends. These funny, fickle, fightin', females are the best yet, but no wonder, because they have such players as Geraldine Scott, Meredeth Williams, jewel Burdell, and Betty jo Culbreth. Some class, eh? Madison Square Gardens! Howard Jernigan is now world's heavyweight champion. He was the first to have joe Louis go down before him. Louis passed out in the ring-from old age, no doubt, though some say there was a banana peeling on the floor that helped a lot. The flea-weight champion of the U. S. is Earl Rotan, he won over Catty McTuerry last week. Sports news brings forth the an- nouncement from S. C., that Florence beat Sumter in football again this year, with a score of 69-O. This game has taken the place of the regular Army- Navy game that was so important back in our high school days. The S. C. news also says that Carl Cocklield has been elected state gover- nor. In the Champaign he greatly in- fluenced the voting population by kiss- ing all the feminine babes under 25. In the state Senate is a Florence High graduate, Ann Coleman, who is using her natural aggressiveness to fight the Keep the women in the home move- ment. The highlight now moves to Florence, where Gene Williams is mayor, being helped by a group of wide awake coun- cilmen, Helen Brunson, Virginia Rogers, and Lavern Benton. In the City of Florence, now a popu- lation of l00,000, a few more changes have been made. The radio station is owned by George Bonnette. A. B. C., N. B. C., and C. B. S. all dial in for some of the programs because they pre- sent such favorite characters as june Short and A. W. Miller, taking up where George Burns and Gracie Allen left off, Bobby Rainwater, the 1967 Spike jones, and that old friend of all-the Lone Ranger, portrayed by Billy Roscoe. O'Neil Gause sponsors a program through the concern he now owns, Wash 'em, Wrince 'em, Wring 'em, Wrip 'em ---the soap for all household purposes. Around the corner from the station is still the pool room, now run by Fred Bailey. Remember when we all used to trade at Cockfield's, now owned by Richard of the same name, so we could see such crack pot winners as Webster Williams, Jimmie Humphries, and Wil- liam Gunnells come out of the pool room? A few doors down is an art studio owned by jimmy Hutto, with Betty Kendrick and Helen Cato Boswell for models. Nice work, says jimmy. Lila Mae Hewitt, Mary Defee, and Anita Dingle operate a dress shop. They make a great deal more money by sew- ing a lot of the clothes themselves- Oops! Rip! -is what would apply to that. P Furman joye never could make up his mind what to do, so he is now Florence's No. 1 general loafer. A little farther down the street is a detective agency called Snoop. Del- mar Palmer is the Sherlock Holmes, assisted by john Johnston, Elree Price, and jack Gregg. They keep Rhett Munn and Roy Copeland on the run, as these two are known as the Dead End Kids. Some characters! Julia Lucas sells new cars. She spends her time riding around demonstrating them. Henry Fraser and Dan Oakes own a loan company nicknamed Triple, be- cause of the amount you must pay back. John Hunsucker is now manager of the theaters in Florence, and we get all the best shows as soon as they are re- leased. Laura Dell Yarborough, Mary Edith Price, and Jennie Marie Rowell sew for their living, and it's said they only exist, but I don't doubt it, remembering our sewing class of '47! Lawyers are often good talkers and you'll believe me when I tell you that Mary Chappell and Norman Andrews are following this line of work. The congregation of the First Bap- tist church is now being kept awake by none other than Mary Sigmon at the console. Dr. Orion Finklea is said to be one of the most prosperous doctors in the B +51 524 country. QCould the fact that he runs a funeral home on the side have anything to do with it?j Helen jeffords, too, is a doctor, but you go to her at your own risk, as she has a sign that says, Not responsible for accidents. Still in the professional field, john Shannon, the psychiatrist, has finally cracked up. Poor boy, but we predicted it years ago. His most frequent patient was Rosalyn Senseney, and truthfully, I'm worried about her, too! Webster's dictionary will be very much out of style soon, as Betty Rose Reeves and Dorothy Powers are writ- ing their own, including all the ain'ts and so on that were counted wrong way back in 1947. Another shop on the main street of Florence is that of beauty operators Sue De Berry and Lottie Mae Woods. They have quite a trade from the males for permanents. jack Hamilton perfers a cold wave. Doris Hoffmeyer and Charlotte jones both work in theipost ofiice, and read all the mail. They are very helpful to the Gossip Club which Levera Timmons, Ina Claire Harper, Dorothy Hicks, and Dorothy Mae Andrews have formed. You can be sure of finding out every- thing and anything from them. The police force-you know, those people called cops in '47-has had quite a change since then. Deci Barbot, Buddy Scarborough, and jimmy Alder- man are the rip, roaring, ticket-giving Dick Tracy's and Dan Dunn's of this modern day. Their beloved chief is Vince None Flowers. johnny Harris is city dog-Chaser, and Donald johnson, the sheriff. Billy Gaillard resides in a bachelors' home, and keeps the yard trim. Earl Hudson, Richard Gardner, and Oregon Rogers keep him company. Next door is an old maids' home where jean Grimsley, Mary Anne Guilford, and Patricia King live. Preacher George Wilson lives right across the street. He's hopeful of a few marriages, and so are the old maids! Now for the McClenaghan High School news! Guess who is now the principal-none other than Mr. Liston Iler White, Ir. His assistant is jimmy Kelley, while the Superintendent of Schools is that dynamic, gigantic per- sonality, Charles fPeanutj Hodges. All three are strict disciplinarians and firm believers in the strong arm method of education for today's bumper crop of juvenile delinquents. Only last week Tom T s expelled for having referred to the honorable super- intendent as old sour puss. It is re- ported that the first official action taken by Mr. White upon becoming principal was to burrow his way into the old files and destroy completely all of his own high school grades. That is easy for us to understand, isn't it, old classmates of '47? joan Kirby has returned to High School, and is teaching Spanish. Imagine who's in her class? Yes, it's jimmy Holliday, Bobby McKinnell, and George McDaniel. It seems that they'll never get through that course. During the summer Frances Ann Estridge helps joan out in giving a special Spanish course for teachers, among whom are Dorothy Brothers, Doris McKenzie, and Janie Mae Hill. The present librarian has the worst trouble with Archie Muckenfuss, about standing at the magazine rack and talk- ing to the girls. Guess who's a-swooning and crooning at vocal music class-sure thing, it's Bobby Carroll, Bobby Fraser, and Hey- wood Collins. Three celebrities, mind you! You should hear that old school band now, led by Wade Stone. Alma Grainger gives special courses to the pupils on how to beat the drum that she used to rag so, way back when ..... Buddy Welch, too, is giving a little help, but as manager of Belk's, he's kept pretty busy. All the seniors now have their pic- tures made at the Snap studio, owned by Tom Kirkland, with the work done by Sara Ginn. Their slogan is, Where there's beauty, we take it, where there's none, we make it. This colossal motto was composed by Edwin Coward, whose stupendous mentality entitles him to the permanent job of slogan writing. jimmy Worrell owns a pavilion at Ocean Drive now. It's called jimmy's Ocean Jive. He has a number of as- sistants, among whom are Evelyn Grim- sley, Milvee Pridgeon, and Margaret Bailey, slot machine operators, and Fred jones, Earl Furman, and Lois Mc- Dougal, bingo callers. Dolores Summer- ford takes care of the popcorn stand, while William Gregory and Mary Salee- by run the bowling alleys. H. P. Galloway owns the French Doughnut Stand and is assisted by Martha Taylor. Mildred Hall operates a hot dog stand next door and is as- sisted by Patsy Fowler on the week-ends, but Patsy is living at Elim now, and is quite satislied it seems. Now, that's all the news for today, so goodbye until tomorrow at this time, when I'll broadcast from W. T. L. A. on Mars, and in the meantime be re- membering that wonder of a class of 1947. Nltzzztzgea-r.' jimmy Dawkins and Richard King The Florence High School Yellow jacket football team of 1946 is leaving behind an enviable gridiron record of which this school should be proud. In achieving this goal the boys have striven loyally and faithfully. After two weeks of rugged and intensive training at Camp Forest this Summer, and led by our co-captains, Major and Tommy Summerford, the Yellow Jackets ' rolled up eight victories to four defeats. Our old rivals, the Sumter Gamecocks, whom we have been unable to defeat in the last sixteen years, again held their record by drubbing us I3-7 on November 28. Much credit for our team's excellent record this year goes to Coach Jack Shivers and his able assistants, G. W. Cloer and DI. In addition to his appointment to the All-State team, Brunson was named the player of the year in South Carolina and was chosen for the mythical All-Southern high school eleven. Because of their outstanding play during the past football season, Major Summerford and Lewis Lukie Brunson were honored by being chosen to play on the South Carolina All-State football team in the annual Shrine Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina. Brunson, particularly, played a superb game in spark- ing his team to a victory over the favored North Carolinians.
